FF7 Revelation Director: Success Could Mean More Final Fantasy Remakes—or the Opposite

Possibly both. Naoki Hamaguchi says the reported success of the first two Final Fantasy VII Remake games could encourage Square Enix to remake more of the series. But splitting one game across installments also creates a business risk: if the opening entry disappoints, the publisher must decide whether and how to continue. Hamaguchi has not announced plans to remake another Final Fantasy title.

Why success could encourage more remakes

Asked whether the FF7 Remake project’s success makes future remakes more likely or whether its scale makes them too difficult, Hamaguchi answered, “I think both are probably true.” In an interview with Radio Times, he said the project had been “very successful” and had contributed significantly to Square Enix from a business perspective. Decision-makers could look at that outcome and think, as he put it, “Let’s do the same again.”

That is a plausible incentive, not a slate announcement. The interview reports Hamaguchi’s assessment of how company managers might interpret the project; it does not confirm approval of remakes of other numbered Final Fantasy games. Radio Times describes the first two entries as performing better than many might expect, but gives no sales totals. There is therefore no verified figure here that can establish how much success might change Square Enix’s plans.

Why the same format carries a business risk

The risk is built into turning one game into multiple releases. If the first installment fails to get the hoped-for response, the company faces a difficult decision about the next one: continue investing in the remaining parts, or change course. Success from an existing project does not remove that exposure from a future remake, whose audience and performance are not guaranteed to match.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE
  • Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
  • Players can switch between two game modes: "Graphics Mode" prioritizes 4K high-resolution graphics; "Performance Mode" prioritizes smooth action at 60 frames per second
  • Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customizable “Photo Mode”
  • Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
  • Play the brand-new episode featuring Yuffie and experience new combat and gameplay additions

That makes the business case more complicated than simply asking whether a popular remake can be repeated. A publisher would have to weigh the potential payoff of a large, multi-part adaptation against the possibility that the first release leaves later installments on uncertain footing. Hamaguchi’s comments describe that trade-off, not a prediction that Square Enix will choose either path.

Why the trilogy may be difficult to reproduce

Commercial risk is only part of the constraint. In a separate PC Gamer interview, Hamaguchi called the trilogy a useful case study but questioned whether it could serve as a repeatable template. He said the team had worked together for 10–12 years and wondered whether other teams could recreate those conditions. That duration describes the collaboration he discussed, not a standard development time for future remakes.

Leadership continuity mattered too. Hamaguchi remained director across the series because he was strongly motivated to keep going; he noted that another lead might have wanted to move on after the first installment. A change in leadership could affect a project’s direction, style or themes. As he told PC Gamer, whether the trilogy becomes a model for others depends in part on whether other teams can reproduce the circumstances behind it.

What is actually planned after the trilogy

Interviews in 2026 describe Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the conclusion of the remake trilogy. At Tokyo Game Show, Hamaguchi said the team did not then have specific future plans for Final Fantasy VII, while leaving open the possibility that fan response after release could influence what follows, according to OurinSaneblogs. In a separate September interview, he said he was not planning further stories related to the Remake trilogy at that time, while distinguishing that from the wider question of Final Fantasy VII’s future, as reported by Respec.

Those comments concern the FF7 project and franchise. They do not establish a plan for remakes of Final Fantasy VI or any other numbered entry. The careful reading is that Square Enix has a possible commercial reason to consider repeating the approach, alongside meaningful financial and production obstacles—and no confirmed announcement of another remake.

Remakes are also a creative decision

A future project would need more than a successful business model; it would need a creative approach that gives the remake its own identity. In an interview with Video Games Chronicle, Hamaguchi warned that responding to every extreme positive and negative fan reaction can lead to a bland game. He also described the FF7 team’s effort to preserve as much as possible from the original while changing the order of some story beats for pacing. Those choices show why another title would not simply be a matter of applying the same production process: each remake would have its own material, audience expectations and creative trade-offs.
