ABC News reported in February 2024 on Sydney concertgoers who said hosts canceled accommodation bookings at short notice, leaving them to seek alternatives at higher prices. A separate Consumer Rescue account described a Palm Springs wedding-week booking that reportedly reappeared for the same dates at a higher price; in that case, the host agreed after escalation to honor the original price. What to do if an Airbnb host cancels before a festival
- Save the reservation record. Keep the original confirmation and any messages from the host or Airbnb, including the stated cancellation reason and time.
- Document any apparent relisting. Take dated screenshots showing the listing, dates, displayed price and identifying details that connect it to your reservation. Preserve the listing URL if available. A matching photo alone may not establish that it is the same property.
- Contact Airbnb support promptly. Provide the reservation details and evidence, and ask support to assess whether the same property is offered for the canceled dates. ABC reported Airbnb’s recommendation that guests who see the same property relisted for the same dates contact its 24-hour support.
- Keep the conversation in writing where possible. Written messages make it easier to keep a clear record of what the host and platform said and when.
- Check local rules for the property’s city. A host’s explanation about a ban or event restriction may not tell the whole story. Rules vary by location. In the Palm Desert example reported by KESQ, a city representative said short-term rentals, including weekend and special-event rentals, were allowed for operators with a valid city permit; the representative disputed a general weekend prohibition. That statement concerns Palm Desert, not other cities.
Can a host cancel and charge more by relisting?
Airbnb told KESQ it was not seeing a notable increase in cancellations and said its deterrents included cancellation fees, calendar blocks and a ban on relisting at a higher price. That is the company’s statement as reported on April 8, 2026; it does not establish what happened in an individual booking or how a particular case will be resolved.
KESQ also described Airbnb’s policy as applying fees of 25–50% of the reservation total to host cancellations made within 48 hours. Because that figure is a news report’s account of policy wording at that time, check Airbnb’s current cancellation policy and terms for the rules that apply to your reservation rather than treating the range as a universal or current guarantee.

Legal rights also depend on where the stay is booked and the circumstances of the cancellation. In its Sydney coverage, ABC quoted Australia’s consumer regulator, the ACCC, saying accommodation providers must comply with Australian Consumer Law, including not misleading consumers about cancellation reasons. That is Australia-specific guidance, not a universal rule for travelers elsewhere.

When festival dates are close, compare alternatives against the needs your original booking was meant to meet. A lower nightly rate may not be cheaper once transport, extra rooms or changed sleeping arrangements are included.
