If braking performance drops or the pedal changes during a track session, come off the pace and stop the session somewhere safe. Heat-related brake fade is one possibility, but a longer pedal can also signal a fluid problem, and symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. Ferrari’s public track-use guidance points to four areas to check—friction-material wear, brake lines, bedding, and brake fluid—while stressing that its procedure supplements the Owner’s Manual. It is general Ferrari guidance, not a 296-specific service procedure.
What brake fade can mean on a 296
On track, repeated hard braking places more demand on the brakes than ordinary road use. A driver may notice that the car does not slow as effectively as before, or that the pedal travels farther or feels different. Those changes deserve attention: do not assume they are an ordinary consequence of a hot session, and do not keep driving at the limit to see whether they go away.

Ferrari’s North American bulletin FNA 153, dated June 2018, identifies several relevant risks for Ferrari road cars used at occasional noncompetitive track events: worn friction material, brake-line condition, inadequate bedding, and brake fluid whose moisture content has lowered its boiling point. The bulletin does not describe a known 296 defect, provide an incidence rate, or offer a symptom-based diagnostic chart. It cannot establish what is wrong with a particular GTB or GTS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA changing or longer-travel pedal is consistent with the fluid mechanism Ferrari describes, but it is not proof that fluid is the cause. Likewise, reduced stopping performance alone does not distinguish heat-related fade from worn or damaged components, a fluid issue, or another fault. Have the system inspected rather than selecting a repair from the pedal feel alone.

“Brake fade” is often used as a broad description of braking that feels less effective after repeated hard use. In this case, it is more useful to treat it as a warning that the system needs attention than as a diagnosis. The published Ferrari guidance discusses several possible contributing conditions, but it does not provide a test that lets a driver identify one by feel. A pedal that travels farther, braking that seems weaker, or a change that appears during a session should all be reported accurately to the service provider.
What to do when braking changes during a session
- Stop pushing the car. If braking has materially deteriorated, end the session. Reduce speed and use a safe place to leave the circuit or stop according to the event’s procedures. Do not continue at track pace while trying to reproduce the symptom.
- Report the change clearly. Tell event staff if needed and give the service provider a concise account: when the change began, whether the pedal moved farther or otherwise changed, and whether braking performance dropped. This information is useful context, not a diagnosis.
- Arrange an inspection before further hard use. Have a qualified Ferrari service provider examine the pads and discs, brake lines, and fluid condition. A road test or an apparent return to normal after cooling does not establish that the system is safe for another session.
- Use the correct service information. Confirm the exact model year and variant, then follow its Owner’s Manual and the applicable Ferrari service procedure for checks and repairs. Do not improvise a bleed, fluid choice, or bedding process based on a generic track guide.
If the pedal or braking remains abnormal, do not drive the car on public roads to a workshop; arrange appropriate assistance. The priority is a safe inspection, not completing the event.
When you describe the issue, separate what you observed from what you think caused it. For example, note whether the pedal began traveling farther, whether braking performance changed, and when in the session the change appeared. Do not label the cause as fluid, pads, discs, or electronics unless a technician has confirmed it. A clear report helps the inspection without encouraging a parts replacement based on guesswork.
Causes Ferrari’s guidance identifies
Brake fluid affected by moisture
Ferrari Technical Service Department explains in FNA 153 that moisture in brake fluid lowers its boiling point. Under high braking demand, bubbles can form; because they are compressible, they can increase pedal travel and sharply reduce braking performance. Ferrari’s wording is: “This moisture content reduces the boiling point of the brake fluid, producing bubbles. As these bubbles are compressible, they cause an increase in brake pedal travel and drastically reduce the performance of the braking system.”
This is a plausible explanation for a longer-travel pedal, not a way to confirm the condition of the fluid in a particular car. The bulletin recommends changing brake fluid before track use and again at the end of the session. For particularly high-stress use, it recommends changing all fluid in the circuit rather than bleeding only at the calipers. Those are general recommendations from a 2018 bulletin; the approved fluid and service method for the exact 296 model year must be confirmed before work is done.
The distinction between bleeding at the calipers and replacing all fluid in the circuit matters: Ferrari specifically calls out full-circuit replacement for particularly high-stress use. It does not provide a 296-specific threshold for what qualifies as particularly high stress, nor a procedure for carrying out that work. A service provider should determine how the recommendation applies to the car and event rather than assuming a caliper-only bleed is equivalent.
Worn friction material or compromised brake lines
FNA 153 calls for inspection of friction-material wear and brake lines before track use. It also says to ensure there is enough disc and pad material for the intended session. A car may have been suitable for everyday driving but still require attention before repeated high-demand use; Ferrari’s public bulletin does not supply the 296’s wear limits or a measurement method.

The bulletin gives particular attention to rear pads on vehicles equipped with ESP because the stability-control system uses the rear brakes. Treat this as an inspection reminder, not a claim that rear-pad wear is the cause of a given event or that a specific 296 always wears them faster.
Inspection should not be reduced to a quick visual glance at one wheel. The bulletin calls for checking both friction-material wear and brake lines, as well as ensuring sufficient disc and pad material for the intended use. The applicable model-year documentation and service procedure—not an assumed generic measurement—must establish the limits and method. If a component is found worn or compromised, the repair decision should follow that inspection and the correct Ferrari information.
Inadequate bedding
Ferrari warns that incorrect bedding can damage friction material, sometimes irreparably. The bulletin describes vitrification and pad material detaching from its backing. It also warns that failing to meet bedding requirements can harm discs: steel discs may overheat locally and deform or crack, while carbon-ceramic discs may lose performance and longevity.
Those warnings make the correct bedding procedure important, but FNA 153 does not provide a 296-specific sequence. Do not substitute a generic series of stops or a procedure for another Ferrari model. Use the instructions applicable to the car and its installed components.
Bedding is therefore not a step to improvise after installing or servicing brake components. The bulletin explains the consequences of doing it incorrectly but does not give a speed range, number of stops, cooling interval, or other sequence for the GTB or GTS. Those details must come from the applicable instructions for the exact vehicle and installed components. If you are unsure whether the brakes have been bedded correctly, ask the service provider before returning to hard use.
Distinguishing a symptom from a confirmed cause
Ferrari’s public bulletin supports a careful, limited interpretation of the symptoms. A longer pedal is consistent with the bubbles Ferrari describes when moisture lowers fluid boiling point. A drop in stopping performance can also occur in the circumstances Ferrari warns about, including inadequate bedding or component wear. But the bulletin does not say that a particular pedal feel identifies fluid condition, nor does it provide a method for separating one possible cause from another while driving.
That limitation matters because the right next step is inspection, not a symptom-based parts choice. A driver should not decide that fluid alone needs changing, that a pad compound is unsuitable, or that a disc upgrade is required based only on a change during one event. Nor does an apparent improvement after the brakes cool establish that the original condition has been resolved. If braking changed materially, have the system examined before another track session.

The sources also do not establish a specific temperature threshold, expected stopping distance, fade rate, or service interval for a 296. Avoid treating an informal number or generic track checklist as a Ferrari specification. Use the model-year documentation and the findings of a qualified inspection.
Why the 296’s brake system does not change the service rules
Ferrari’s 296 GTB press material describes a brake-by-wire system that blends hydraulic and electric braking in all operating modes, including ABS, and an ABS evo control module. That is useful context about the car’s system, but it is not a troubleshooting procedure for fade. It does not identify the cause of a particular pedal change or authorize a DIY bleeding method.
Do not infer that regenerative braking caused a fade event. The cited material establishes the system description, not a causal link between that system and a specific symptom. Diagnosis requires inspection and model-appropriate service information.
Nor should parts or procedures from track-focused variants be assumed to apply to a road-going 296 GTB or GTS. Ferrari’s 296 Challenge announcement describes ABS EVO Track and CCM-R PLUS discs for that Challenge car. Ferrari’s article on the 296 Speciale describes higher thermal loads than the 296 GTB, alongside enhanced cooling intended to dissipate heat and avoid caliper-fluid overheating. These variant-specific details do not establish a standard-road-car retrofit, a failure pattern, or a required upgrade for a GTB or GTS.
The existence of a track-specific component on a Challenge car is not evidence that the road car needs the same part. Likewise, the Speciale’s cooling measures are described in the context of that variant’s higher grip and downforce; they do not demonstrate a defect in the GTB or GTS. If considering changes to a standard 296’s brakes, first obtain model-specific evidence about fitment, approval, and service implications. The public material cited here does not establish a pad-compound comparison, fluid comparison, rotor upgrade, or retrofit recommendation.

Prepare the car before its next track event
Ferrari’s FNA 153 covers Ferrari road cars used occasionally at noncompetitive track events. It says components may wear faster in that use, asks customers to inform an authorized Ferrari dealer before track use so the vehicle can be prepared, and directs readers to the Owner’s Manual. The bulletin supplements that manual; it is not the 296’s complete maintenance schedule.
- Identify the exact car and documentation. Confirm whether the vehicle is a 296 GTB or GTS and its model year. Use the corresponding Owner’s Manual and Ferrari service information rather than assuming one year’s instructions apply to another.
- Schedule a pre-event brake inspection. Ask the service provider to inspect friction-material wear and brake lines, and to confirm there is adequate disc and pad material for the planned use. The correct limits and inspection criteria must come from the applicable documentation.
- Confirm fluid service requirements. Ask which fluid is approved for that exact car and how Ferrari specifies service. FNA 153 recommends fluid changes before and after track use and, for particularly high-stress use, replacement of all fluid in the circuit. Confirm how that general guidance applies to the vehicle before arranging the work.
- Follow the correct bedding instructions. Have the applicable procedure for the installed friction material and discs confirmed. Do not infer a sequence from FNA 153, which warns about bedding consequences but does not provide a 296-specific method.
- Recheck after the event. Ferrari’s general bulletin recommends changing brake fluid again at the end of track use. Have the brakes inspected if performance or pedal behavior changed, rather than relying only on routine preparation for the next outing.
FNA 153 is a useful starting point for general track preparation, but it does not state exact 296 wear limits, the approved fluid specification, a brake-by-wire bleed sequence, or a model-year service interval. Ferrari TechInfo describes subscription access to factory-authorized service and parts information used by dealers, including model-specific documentation. A Ferrari service provider can use the appropriate service information to determine the applicable procedure.

For practical planning, tell the dealer or service provider that the car is intended for an occasional noncompetitive track event, as well as the date of the event and whether there have been recent braking changes. Ferrari’s bulletin explicitly asks customers to inform an authorized dealer before track use so the vehicle can be prepared. The scope of preparation should be based on the car’s condition and its own documentation, not a one-size-fits-all track package.
There is no single preparation checklist in FNA 153 that replaces the Owner’s Manual. It identifies useful brake checks and fluid guidance, but it does not set the model-year inspection limits, specify a pad or disc replacement point, or provide a complete 296 maintenance schedule. Ask the service provider to confirm what work is appropriate for the exact variant, model year, condition, and intended use.

The public guidance does not establish a repair price, labor time, fluid price, or parts cost for a 296 brake inspection or repair. The eventual cost depends on what the inspection finds and what service is required; a fluid service, replacement of worn friction material, and repair of a compromised line are different jobs. Request an itemized estimate from a qualified Ferrari service provider after the car has been assessed rather than relying on a generic figure.
Ferrari TechInfo describes subscription access to factory-authorized service and parts information used by dealers. Its model-specific documentation is relevant because the exact 296 wear limits, approved fluid, and brake-by-wire bleeding procedure are not established by the public track-use bulletin. Subscription terms and prices are not specified here. A dealer or qualified Ferrari provider is the practical route for applying the applicable service information.
A brake-fluid bleeder kit may seem like a convenient tool for track preparation, but the public material does not verify a particular kit’s compatibility with the 296 brake-by-wire system or supply a DIY bleeding procedure. Do not buy a tool on the assumption that it makes this service suitable for home use. Have the approved method and equipment confirmed for the exact car; for this system, a qualified Ferrari service provider is the stronger recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to assume or attempt
- Do not treat the symptom as a diagnosis. A longer pedal and reduced performance are consistent with Ferrari’s description of moisture-affected fluid, but they do not prove fluid is the cause.
- Do not continue the session after a material loss of braking performance. Cooling down or waiting for the pedal to feel different does not replace an inspection.
- Do not choose a fluid, pad compound, disc upgrade, or temperature target from guesswork. The cited Ferrari material does not establish a 296-specific recommendation for any of those choices.
- Do not apply Challenge or Speciale parts and procedures to a GTB or GTS by assumption. Ferrari describes those as variant-specific developments, not universal 296 requirements.
- Do not perform a DIY bleed based on generic instructions. The public bulletin does not specify the 296’s brake-by-wire bleeding process or confirm that a particular tool is compatible. Have the procedure and equipment confirmed by a qualified Ferrari service provider.
- Do not infer that ordinary road readiness guarantees track readiness. Ferrari says components can wear faster during track use and asks that the car be prepared for the intended event.
- Do not use the 2018 bulletin as the whole service schedule. It supplements the Owner’s Manual and applies generally to occasional noncompetitive track use, not as a complete 296 maintenance plan.
Limits of the published guidance
The key public guidance here is Ferrari North America’s FNA 153 from June 2018. It addresses Ferrari road cars at occasional noncompetitive track events, not the 296 specifically. Ferrari’s 296 press materials establish broad system and variant context, not service limits or diagnosis. Together, these materials support sensible preparation and explain why fluid, wear, lines, and bedding matter; they do not replace the applicable 296 Owner’s Manual, Workshop Manual, or a service inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a longer brake pedal prove the 296’s brake fluid has boiled?
No. Ferrari says moisture can lower brake fluid’s boiling point and form compressible bubbles that increase pedal travel, so the symptom is consistent with that mechanism. It does not confirm the cause on a particular car. Stop hard use and have the system inspected.
What should I do if braking performance drops during a track session?
End the session if braking has materially deteriorated. Reduce speed, follow the event’s procedures to stop safely, and arrange an inspection before further hard use. If braking remains abnormal, do not drive the car on public roads to a workshop; arrange appropriate assistance.
How often should brake fluid be changed for 296 track use?
Ferrari’s June 2018 FNA 153 bulletin recommends changing fluid before track use and again at the end of the session. For particularly high-stress use, it recommends replacing all fluid in the circuit rather than bleeding only at the calipers. Confirm the approved fluid and exact service method for the car’s model year with a qualified Ferrari service provider.
Does Ferrari publish a 296-specific bedding procedure or wear limit in this guidance?
No. FNA 153 warns that incorrect bedding can damage pads and discs, but it does not give a 296-specific sequence or wear limit. Use the relevant model-year Owner’s Manual and Ferrari service information for the exact car and installed components.
Should I install 296 Challenge or Speciale brake parts on my GTB or GTS?
The cited material does not establish that a road-going GTB or GTS needs those parts or that they are an approved retrofit. Ferrari describes Challenge and Speciale equipment in the context of those variants. Do not assume their parts or procedures apply to a standard road car.
Can I bleed a 296’s brakes at home with a generic bleeder kit?
The public guidance does not provide a 296 brake-by-wire bleeding procedure or verify a generic tool’s compatibility. Have the correct equipment and method confirmed for the exact model year, and use a qualified Ferrari service provider rather than relying on generic instructions.
How much does it cost to fix track-day brake fade on a Ferrari 296?
The cited public materials do not give prices or labor times. Cost depends on what inspection finds and whether the car needs fluid service, friction-material replacement, line repair, or other work. Request an itemized estimate after a qualified inspection.
The Bottom Line
If the 296’s pedal changes or braking performance drops on track, stop the session and arrange an inspection before further hard use. Ferrari’s general FNA 153 guidance highlights fluid condition, friction-material wear, brake lines, and correct bedding, but it is not a 296-specific repair procedure. Confirm fluid, limits, bedding, and bleeding requirements in the exact model-year documentation with a qualified Ferrari service provider.
