In a feature published by Noor Anand Chawla in Hindustan Times on October 2, 2026, artist Salony Garg reads the mountains, trees, flowers and streams in Hakeem’s work as carriers of painful history—not as straightforward illustrations of violence.
Who is Feroza Hakeem?
As recounted in Chawla’s feature, Hakeem was born in 1995 in Quetta, Balochistan, into the Hazara community. The article describes her family’s migration from Afghanistan amid persecution and reports that her brother was murdered in a targeted killing in 2018. These biographical details give context to the work, but they do not reduce the paintings to autobiography.

Hakeem graduated from the National College of Arts in Lahore in 2019 and spent a semester at the Siena Art Institute in Italy. Garg, the feature’s guide to the paintings, is a Hyderabad-based artist and co-director of the Samsara Academy of Art. Her own paintings explore identity, belonging and human connection.
How do Hakeem’s landscapes carry grief and hope?
Garg’s reading centres on contrast: lush colour and familiar natural forms coexist with loss, displacement and tension. Hakeem does not present suffering as an explicit scene. Instead, the landscapes invite viewers to notice how beauty can shelter memory while also making its weight felt. Chawla’s feature describes them as “beautiful, but not innocent.”

The works adapt conventions associated with Persian miniature painting. In some, Hakeem replaces decorative borders with newspaper clippings and photographs, bringing documentary traces into an image built from landscape. The shift makes the frame part of the meaning: the natural world and the record of human events meet without one simply explaining the other.
What do the three paintings show?
Women, Life, Freedom (2026)
This large, unframed canvas hangs like a tapestry. Its trailing braids are made from Hakeem’s own hair, which she cut in the depressive aftermath of her brother’s death, according to the feature. A red sky, yellow landscape and multicoloured trees set a vivid surface against that account of loss. The contrast is not a simple move from darkness to optimism; it holds personal grief within an image of striking colour.

Between Two Places (2026)
The painting divides into two mirrored halves, repeating a copse of trees in colour on one side and black-and-white on the other. Between them sits a small square of mountainous homeland. Chawla suggests that the split may evoke being pulled in different directions, physically and mentally. That is a possible reading offered by the feature, rather than a definitive statement from Hakeem about the work.

A headscarved woman sits among trees above a river. The trees form a rectangular margin around the scene, taking the place of a conventional miniature border. Chawla reads the woman’s upward gaze and the foliage around her as signs of hope and love: here, nature can act as shelter as well as a bearer of memory.

What changes when nature replaces a literal scene of violence?
Rather than depict violence directly, Hakeem’s paintings give viewers signs to read: a divided landscape, a documentary fragment, a strand of hair, or a tree-framed figure. This approach leaves room for uncertainty. A mountain or river can be part of a homeland remembered, while colour and foliage can suggest protection without erasing the grief beneath them.
The contrast between natural motifs and documentary material is especially telling. Trees and flowers make the paintings visually inviting; newspaper clippings and photographs point toward events beyond the image. The works do not ask viewers to mistake beauty for innocence, or to treat painful history as merely decorative.
