Felix Mobile vs other Australian unlimited-data mobile plans: what to compare in 2026

Which Australian mobile plan gives me unlimited data, and how does Felix compare? Felix is the most straightforward option if you want data that does not run out at a defined speed ceiling: its standard Unlimited plan is $40 a month at up to 40 Mbps, while Unlimited+ is $50 a month at up to 80 Mbps. Both include unlimited standard Australian calls and texts and have no lock-in contract. The important qualification is that these are maximum speeds, not guaranteed throughput, and Felix restricts tethering to personal devices rather than modems or home-internet replacement use.

Other services use “unlimited” or “endless” differently. Some provide a finite full-speed allowance and then continue at a much lower speed. Optus, for example, says eligible Endless Data services continue at up to 1.5 Mbps after the shared allowance is used. Compare the speed model, renewal price, coverage, contract terms and permitted use—not just the headline word.

Felix and the alternatives at a glance

Service Ongoing monthly price High-speed data model Speed after allowance Network and access Contract and use rules
Felix Unlimited $40 per month at Felix’s standard rate Unlimited data, capped at up to 40 Mbps Not applicable; the plan has a fixed maximum speed rather than a published high-speed bucket 4G and 5G access where the device and Vodafone network coverage support it No lock-in; tethering only to personal devices, not a modem or substitute for home internet
Felix Unlimited+ $50 per month Unlimited data, capped at up to 80 Mbps Not applicable; fixed maximum speed 5G requires a compatible device and 5G coverage; 4G remains subject to coverage No lock-in; the same personal-device tethering restriction applies
Optus Endless Data (eligible services) Not stated in the available official details Shared finite allowance at normal speed Up to 1.5 Mbps once the shared allowance is exhausted, according to Optus Exact plan coverage and 4G/5G conditions depend on the selected service Plan-specific; check the current critical information summary for renewal, hotspot and roaming rules
Telstra, Vodafone, Belong, Aussie Broadband and Dodo offers identified in a recent comparison Not stated for a specific current plan Several offers are described as continuing after a finite high-speed allowance, but the allowance differs by plan Not independently confirmed for each provider Provider and plan specific Provider and plan specific

The last row is a discovery list, not a claim that every service from those providers is unlimited. A current provider page and critical information summary are needed for the exact price, allowance, throttled speed, coverage and restrictions.

What “unlimited data” actually means

Fixed-speed unlimited: Felix’s model

Felix publishes unlimited data at speeds up to a stated ceiling. On the standard plan, data remains available without a published usage cut-off, but the network limits the connection to 40 Mbps. Unlimited+ raises that ceiling to 80 Mbps. Because there is no separate full-speed quota in the listed terms, using more data does not trigger a second, lower speed tier.

“Up to” matters. Felix says actual performance varies with your handset, location, coverage and network congestion. A speed test can therefore be below the advertised cap even when the plan is working normally. The cap is a maximum policy setting, not a throughput guarantee.

Finite full-speed data followed by a slower connection

Other plans call continued access “endless” or “unlimited” when data remains usable after the included high-speed allowance is consumed. Optus describes its Endless Data support option as continuing at a maximum of 1.5 Mbps after the shared allowance is used, with no extra data charge. That is a materially different experience from Felix: the allowance at normal speed is finite, and the post-allowance speed can affect large downloads, high-resolution video, cloud backups and app updates.

Some prepaid listings also combine finite allowances with conditional bonus data, such as weekend promotions. A bonus period is not equivalent to an unlimited allowance and may have eligibility, expiry or usage conditions.

Why the distinction changes your decision

  • Usage predictability: A fixed-speed unlimited plan removes the risk of a billable excess-data charge while avoiding a sudden change from normal speed to a very low throttle.
  • Peak performance: A finite-data plan may be faster before its allowance runs out than a capped unlimited plan, but only for that included amount.
  • Heavy-use tolerance: Streaming, frequent hotspot use and large file transfers consume a finite bucket quickly, making the post-allowance policy more important than the marketing label.
  • Price fairness: Compare the renewal price, not a short introductory offer, and include any required add-ons or separate data-sharing fees.

Felix plan details you need before signing up

Felix Unlimited at 40 Mbps

Felix lists the standard Unlimited plan at $40 per month after its introductory pricing. It includes unlimited data at up to 40 Mbps, unlimited standard local calls and texts, 4G/5G access where available, and no lock-in contract. The listing displayed a time-limited introductory offer for eligible customers; eligibility and the offer end date apply, so treat $40 as the meaningful ongoing comparison figure.

  • NO CONTRACTS: Prepaid wireless with no annual contracts, no credit checks, and no hidden fees.

Forty megabits per second is intended for ordinary mobile activity such as web use, social apps, music, navigation, video calls and typical video streaming. Your experience still depends on radio conditions and congestion, so a 40 Mbps cap should not be read as a promise that every speed test will reach 40 Mbps.

Felix Unlimited+ at 80 Mbps

Unlimited+ costs $50 per month and raises the published ceiling to up to 80 Mbps while retaining unlimited data, standard calls and texts and no lock-in. Felix positions it for faster downloads of larger files. To use 5G, you need a 5G-compatible handset and 5G coverage; a compatible device alone cannot create coverage where the network does not provide it.

Renewal price, promotion and legacy discounts

Felix’s January 2026 notice said the standard price for its 40 Mbps unlimited plan had been $40 a month since September 2023. Customers on an affected legacy discount were scheduled to move to $40 from a renewal on or after 5 January 2026. This is why an older reference to a $35 Felix price is stale.

Both plans renew monthly until you cancel. A promotion can lower the first bill or a defined introductory period, but it does not change the recurring price unless the offer terms explicitly say so. Record the renewal amount and the date your promotional period ends when comparing services.

Coverage and variable speed

Felix says its data is for use in Australia within Vodafone network coverage. Check the coverage map for your home, workplace, commute and the places where you expect to use the service. Indoor coverage, local terrain, building materials, handset antennas and congestion can produce different results only a few streets apart.

Tethering and prohibited home-internet use

Felix’s short-form terms state: "Tethering permitted to personal devices only, but must not be used in a modem or as a substitute for a home internet service." You can share the connection with your own laptop or tablet under that wording, but using a SIM in a 4G/5G modem, router or fixed home setup conflicts with the stated restriction. If you need a primary household connection, compare a product whose terms expressly allow that use.

How to compare another plan with Felix

  1. Describe your real usage. Estimate monthly video, cloud backup, gaming updates, navigation and hotspot use. Separate phone-only use from connecting other devices; the latter can consume data much faster and may be restricted.
  2. Write down the speed model. Ask whether data is unlimited at one cap, unlimited only after a quota, or finite with a reduced speed afterward. Record both the normal maximum and the throttled maximum. “No excess data charges” does not mean unlimited full-speed data.
  3. Use the recurring price. Put the standard monthly renewal price in the main comparison column. Add the promotional price in a separate column with its eligibility and end date. If the provider does not publish a price for the exact service, mark it as not stated rather than estimating it.
  4. Check what counts toward the allowance. Shared data pools, bonus weekend data, rollover, video optimisation and family sharing can change the usable amount. Read the critical information summary rather than relying on a store headline.
  5. Test coverage where you will use the phone. Compare the provider’s map with your address and regular routes. If possible, test with a prepaid SIM or an eSIM trial before moving your primary number. Maps show predicted outdoor coverage; they do not guarantee indoor speed.
  6. Confirm the network technology. A 5G label does not guarantee 5G at your location. Check handset compatibility, required bands, 5G inclusion and whether the plan falls back to 4G without a surcharge.
  7. Read contract and cancellation language. Note whether the service is month-to-month, whether cancellation takes effect immediately or at the next renewal, and whether a discounted period changes automatically to a higher rate.
  8. Check hotspot, modem and fair-use clauses. Look for explicit wording about tethering to personal devices, routers, cameras, business use and replacing fixed broadband. This step prevents buying a phone plan for a use the provider prohibits.
  9. Compare inclusions beyond data. Verify standard calls, texts, international calls, voicemail, international roaming and calls to premium or satellite numbers. Felix’s listed plans include unlimited standard local calls and texts; other inclusions are plan-specific.
  10. Save the terms you relied on. Keep the plan page, critical information summary and promotion conditions showing the date you joined. Providers can change future prices or promotions, and the saved terms help resolve a billing or eligibility dispute.

Detailed comparison of the named alternatives

Optus Endless Data

Optus is the clearest documented example of a different unlimited-data structure. Its support wording says eligible services continue at a maximum of 1.5 Mbps once the shared data allowance has been used, at no extra charge. Before comparing it with Felix, identify the allowance size, the normal-speed maximum, the ongoing monthly price and the exact eligibility rule for the service you intend to buy. Those fields were not established together in the available official details, and Optus has multiple prepaid and postpaid offers.

Telstra, Vodafone, Belong, Aussie Broadband and Dodo

A recent Australian market comparison lists these providers among services with some form of continued data after an included high-speed allowance. It does not establish one universal plan, price or throttle for each brand. Each provider has multiple tiers, and terms can change. Treat the names as a starting point for checking current plan pages, not as evidence that every listed plan delivers fixed-speed unlimited data.

  • EASY ACTIVATION: Bring your own phone and activate your SIM on the Tello website; check your phone compatibility and coverage maps before purchasing to confirm service in your area

For each candidate, obtain the exact plan name and fill the same fields: renewal price, promotional eligibility and end date, high-speed allowance, speed after exhaustion, any maximum speed before exhaustion, 4G/5G access, local coverage, contract, tethering or modem rules, calls and texts, and roaming. If any field is missing, the comparison is incomplete.

Speed, coverage and device factors

What the speed caps do—and do not—tell you

A 40 Mbps or 80 Mbps cap controls the highest rate the plan will permit under suitable network conditions. It does not reserve that capacity for you. Congestion at busy times, weak indoor signal, cell distance, backhaul limits and handset capability can all reduce measured speed. Conversely, a plan with a higher theoretical peak may feel slower in a crowded location than a lower-cap plan on a less congested cell.

For phone use, latency and consistency can matter as much as the headline number. Video calls, navigation and music usually need a stable connection rather than maximum download speed. Large downloads benefit from Unlimited+’s higher ceiling only when coverage and congestion allow it and when the device can use the available network technology.

5G eligibility is a three-part check

  • Your handset must support the provider’s 5G service and relevant bands.
  • The plan must include 5G access rather than reserving it for a higher tier.
  • Your location must be inside usable 5G coverage at the time you connect.

If any part fails, the phone uses 4G or another available technology. That fallback is normal and does not by itself indicate a fault.

When Felix is the better fit

  • You want a predictable data experience. The listed Felix plans do not switch to a separately published post-quota speed after a usage threshold; they apply a stated maximum from the start.
  • You use a lot of data on the phone itself. Frequent streaming, app updates and cloud synchronisation are easier to budget when data does not expire or fall into a 1.5 Mbps-style tier after a bucket is consumed.
  • You value month-to-month flexibility. There is no lock-in contract, so you can cancel rather than wait for a fixed term to end.
  • Your local Vodafone coverage is strong. Felix’s value depends on the network performance at your actual locations, not on the national label alone.

When another plan may suit you better

  • You need the highest possible peak speed. A different plan may advertise a higher 4G or 5G maximum, although its full-speed allowance could be limited.
  • You need an approved home or router connection. Felix’s terms prohibit modem use and substituting the service for home internet, so choose a service whose conditions explicitly permit fixed wireless or router use.
  • You use little data and want a lower bill. A finite plan can cost less when your monthly usage stays comfortably below its allowance; compare the recurring price rather than paying for unlimited capacity you will not use.
  • You require specific roaming or international inclusions. Felix’s listed inclusions cover standard local calls and texts; verify overseas use separately on every plan.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Comparing an introductory price with a standard rate

Put the post-promotion renewal price beside every offer. Felix’s $40 standard rate—not an eligibility-limited introductory figure—is the fair baseline for its 40 Mbps plan.

Calling every continued-data plan “the same as Felix”

A plan that continues at 1.5 Mbps after a shared allowance has been exhausted is not equivalent to unlimited data at a fixed 40 Mbps cap. State the allowance and throttle explicitly.

Assuming the cap is guaranteed

Advertised maximums are affected by device, location, coverage and congestion. Use coverage maps and, where practical, a short test period before porting your main number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a phone plan as an unapproved router service

Read tethering and modem clauses before inserting the SIM into a hotspot, router or other permanent installation. Felix expressly limits tethering to personal devices and excludes home-internet substitution.

Relying on an old price or plan name

Plan pages change. The legacy $35 Felix reference no longer describes the standard 40 Mbps price after the January 2026 renewal change. Check the date and save the terms shown at signup.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose whether you need fixed-speed unlimited data or a finite high-speed allowance with continued throttled access.
  • Set a maximum recurring monthly price and ignore promotional savings until you have recorded the renewal rate.
  • Check coverage at every important location, not only your postcode’s outdoor estimate.
  • Confirm handset compatibility and 5G eligibility.
  • Read tethering, modem, business-use and home-internet restrictions.
  • Verify calls, texts, voicemail, roaming and international-number charges.
  • Check cancellation timing and whether the service renews automatically.
  • Save the current plan page and critical information summary before ordering.

On the information currently published, Felix Unlimited is the clearest match for someone who wants a simple, month-to-month unlimited-data plan at a moderate 40 Mbps ceiling. Unlimited+ costs $10 more for an 80 Mbps ceiling and makes sense when faster large downloads matter. An alternative can be better only after you confirm its exact allowance, post-allowance speed, ongoing price, coverage and permitted use; the word “unlimited” alone is not enough.
