The safest way to learn Feed the Deep is to treat every dive as an expedition, not a race to maximum depth. Set one objective before launch, reserve oxygen for the return journey, mark important forks and hazards, and leave with resources you can actually bring home. The caves are procedurally generated, so a memorized route will not carry you through every run; repeatable planning habits matter more than a single perfect map.
Feed the Deep is a single-player Lovecraftian roguelike by Luke Muscat. Its core loop combines exploration of changing undersea caves with resource collection, trading, upgrades and items, while darkness, hostile wildlife and limited oxygen turn navigation into a survival decision. This guide explains how to plan a run, decide when to turn around, choose upgrades without relying on an unsupported “best” order, and recover when a dive goes wrong.

What each dive is really asking you to do
Feed the Deep’s objective is not simply to descend as far as possible. You are balancing four competing needs:
- Reach: move through a cave system toward a chosen depth, branch or objective.
- Information: learn the current layout, identify safer passages and record useful decisions with markers.
- Resources: collect material that can be traded for upgrades and items.
- Extraction: return before oxygen, damage or disorientation turns a profitable trip into a failed one.
The official descriptions frame the setting around feeding an eldritch creature on the ocean floor to protect floating cities. In practical terms, that story goal is delivered through repeated expeditions. A successful early run is one that improves your next attempt, even if it ends well short of the deepest point you have seen.

Why the cave layout changes your priorities
The caves are procedurally generated. Each run can change the arrangement of passages, forks, resource clusters and hazards, so a route that was efficient yesterday may not exist in the next dive. You should therefore remember principles rather than coordinates: identify the safest way back, mark meaningful junctions, and note which branch produced useful resources at an acceptable risk.
Why oxygen is different from an ordinary resource
Oxygen is a hard expedition limit. It is not merely another bar to spend on optional loot. If you use almost all of it while descending, the return trip becomes a forced gamble. The official descriptions establish limited oxygen as a defining constraint, but they do not publish a universal percentage, drain rate or item capacity that applies to every situation. Any reserve target in this guide is therefore a planning method, not an official threshold.
Choose a purpose before you leave the base
Write down one primary goal for the dive. A clear goal prevents you from converting every interesting room into an obligation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Map a new branch
Use a mapping run when you are entering an unfamiliar section. Move slowly enough to recognize the route back, place markers at forks and hazards, and stop once you have enough information to plan a dedicated collection run. The objective is knowledge, not a maximum haul.
Collect a particular resource
When you need resources for an upgrade or item, decide in advance how much risk the collection is worth. Take the first profitable cluster that fits your route and return rather than allowing “one more room” to consume the oxygen reserve you need for extraction.
Test a route to a deeper objective
A route-testing run asks whether you can reach a target and still return. Carry only the risk you need to evaluate the path. If the approach is safe but the return is not, the run has still answered an important question: you need a better route, more endurance or a different support item before attempting the objective again.

Make a progress attempt
Use this goal only when you already understand the relevant route and have enough equipment to tolerate mistakes. A progress run can be faster and more aggressive, but it should still have a planned turnaround condition. “I will turn around when the return route becomes uncertain” is more useful than “I will turn around when the gauge is nearly empty.”
Build an oxygen plan around the return trip
Plan oxygen backward from extraction. Before taking a side passage, ask whether you can come back through the known route, detour around a blocked or dangerous section, and still reach safety. The last part of the gauge is not exploration time; it is your emergency margin.
The return-budget method
- Identify the exit route. At the start of a dive, note the path you expect to use to return. If the route is unknown, assume the trip home will take longer than the descent.
- Reserve oxygen before collecting. Decide what must remain available for the return and possible detours. Do not spend that reserve merely because a nearby room contains attractive loot.
- Recalculate after every major branch. A long corridor, hazard, enemy encounter or wrong turn changes the cost of getting out. Re-evaluate before continuing.
- Turn around while the route is still comfortable. If you are already rushing, the decision came too late. Leave enough capacity to navigate rather than relying on a perfect, uninterrupted sprint.
How to handle detours
Detours are expensive because they consume oxygen without necessarily increasing your progress. When a passage is blocked, dark or guarded, compare three options: take the hazard now, search for a safer branch, or return with what you have. Choose the option that preserves the most reliable extraction path, not the one that promises the largest theoretical haul.
There is no published oxygen-drain table or universal reserve percentage for Feed the Deep. Avoid guides that present a single number as guaranteed for every cave. Your reserve should expand when you are learning a route, carrying valuable resources or dealing with threats, and can shrink only when the path is familiar and the consequences of a mistake are acceptable.
Use markers to turn a random cave into a temporary plan
Steam’s description specifically supports slow exploration with markers. Markers are valuable because they preserve decisions even though the underlying cave generation changes between runs.
Recommended Free Tools
Where to place markers
- Forks: identify the branch you used, the branch you rejected and the direction of the route back.
- Resource clusters: mark locations worth revisiting when you have a collection objective.
- Hazards: record darkness, hostile wildlife or terrain that forced a retreat.
- Safe return points: mark the clearest route toward extraction, especially after a confusing section.
Make markers descriptive rather than decorative
A marker should answer a question you will ask later. “Return route” is more useful than a series of identical symbols. If the game’s available marker labels are limited, use placement consistently: for example, one convention for a fork and another for a hazard. The exact icon system is less important than being able to interpret your own trail quickly under pressure.

When a fast dive is better
Fast, aggressive movement is appropriate when the route is already known, the objective is urgent and you can navigate without stopping to investigate every branch. Its advantage is time and distance; its risk is that speed burns oxygen and increases exposure to hazards before you have processed them.
When slow exploration is better
Slow, marked exploration is the stronger choice in a new cave branch, during a mapping run or when you are collecting carefully. It reduces navigation mistakes and creates route knowledge that can support a later fast attempt. Its cost is time: more encounters may occur, and hesitation can expose you to threats for longer.
| Decision axis | Fast, aggressive dive | Slow, marked exploration |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | Known route, urgent objective, confident movement | New branch, route learning, careful collection |
| Main advantage | Covers ground quickly | Reduces navigation mistakes and preserves route knowledge |
| Main risk | Burns oxygen and increases exposure to hazards | Takes longer and may create more encounters |
| Official description basis | Steam presents diving fast and aggressively as an option | Steam presents slow exploration with markers as an option |
Decide what counts as a successful haul
Resources collected during a dive fund upgrades and items. That means the value of a run is measured by what you return with and what you learned, not by how deep you briefly reached. If you fail to extract, the haul does not become lasting progress.
Use net progress, not maximum depth
Evaluate a route with this simple model:
Net progress = resources returned + useful information gained − oxygen spent beyond your safe return budget − damage and failure risk.
This is a decision framework, not an in-game formula. It helps explain why a shallow, repeatable route can be better than a spectacular descent that ends with no resources banked.
Take profitable exits
Leave when the cargo is valuable enough to fund the next improvement, when the route becomes substantially more hostile, or when your return margin is narrowing. Do not wait for a universal “best” haul: the official sources do not publish exact resource values, drop rates or a complete ranking of collection targets.

Separate information runs from farming runs
A mapping run can be successful with little cargo if it identifies a safer branch or reveals where a hazard blocks progress. A farming run should minimize unnecessary exploration and repeat the best-known path. Mixing the two goals often leads to a long, improvised expedition that spends the oxygen reserve before either objective is complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSpend early resources on the bottleneck you actually feel
The official website says base objectives are approachable when players take time to upgrade the diver and buy items, while challenge options provide a more hardcore experience. It does not publish a definitive item-by-item priority order. Use the following framework as a playstyle recommendation rather than a statement of named item statistics.
If the return trip is the problem
Prioritize improvements that make a complete expedition more repeatable: additional endurance, navigation support or anything that reduces the chance of losing the route. The goal is not simply to remain underwater longer; it is to increase the amount of useful work you can complete while preserving a reliable exit.
If threats stop your progress
Choose survivability or combat support when hostile wildlife repeatedly forces retreats, drains your margin or prevents you from carrying resources home. A defensive improvement is valuable when it converts dangerous encounters into manageable ones, even if it does not increase maximum depth directly.
If darkness causes mistakes
Favor tools or upgrades that improve awareness and route reading when darkness makes you miss branches, collide with danger or lose the return path. Better information can be more valuable than raw speed because it prevents an entire expedition from being invalidated by one wrong turn.
If you are comfortable but inefficient
Once you can reliably extract, consider improvements that shorten familiar routes or increase the resources you can bring back. Do not buy for a hypothetical problem while your current runs are failing for a different reason. Upgrade the bottleneck that ends your expeditions most often.
Best Value
A practical plan for your first several dives
- First dive: learn the loop. Choose a nearby route, observe how the cave branches, collect a modest amount and return before the oxygen margin becomes uncomfortable. Place markers at the first important fork and on the safest route home.
- Second dive: verify the return. Revisit the known section and test whether you can reach one additional branch while still extracting calmly. If the return feels rushed, treat that as evidence that endurance, navigation or route choice is the next priority.
- Third dive: run a focused collection trip. Select a resource goal, follow the marked route and leave once the cargo is useful. Avoid turning a profitable trip into an unplanned deep expedition.
- Fourth dive: investigate one hazard. Approach a darkness zone or hostile-wildlife encounter only far enough to learn its safe alternatives. Mark the location and retreat if the encounter consumes too much oxygen or health.
- Fifth dive: combine what you learned. Use the safest known approach, collect resources on the way and attempt the next objective only if the return budget remains intact.
These are not mandatory missions or fixed maps. Procedural generation means your actual sequence may differ; the purpose is to teach a repeatable pattern of observation, extraction and investment.
Threat awareness: darkness and hostile wildlife
Darkness is a navigation threat
Dark areas do more than reduce visibility. They make it harder to recognize branches, judge distance and identify the route back. Slow down when entering an unfamiliar dark section, mark the decision point and avoid committing to a long branch without a clear extraction plan.
Wildlife changes the cost of a route
Hostile wildlife can turn an apparently short passage into an expensive one. Do not assume a fixed enemy pattern or a permanently safe corridor: the caves are procedurally generated, and the available descriptions do not provide a complete enemy database. Treat an encounter as a route and resource decision. If avoiding it costs less than fighting or absorbing damage, avoidance may be the profitable choice.

The official website distinguishes approachable base objectives from optional challenges intended to make the game more hardcore. Learn the normal expedition rhythm first. Challenge options are most useful when you understand how much oxygen a return requires, which hazards repeatedly derail you and which upgrades address those failures.
Failure modes and how to correct them
| What happened | Likely planning error | Correction for the next run |
|---|---|---|
| You reached a new area but could not return | The descent consumed the return budget | Turn around earlier, mark the route and reserve oxygen before exploring side branches |
| You returned with little or no useful cargo | The run mixed mapping and farming goals | Choose one resource target and exit when it is met |
| You became lost after a detour | Forks and hazards were not marked clearly | Place markers at every consequential decision and keep the safest return path identifiable |
| Wildlife repeatedly forced retreats | The route’s threat cost exceeded your current equipment | Use a safer branch or invest in survivability or combat support |
| Darkness caused repeated navigation mistakes | You moved through an unknown section too quickly | Slow down, mark the entrance and treat visibility as part of route planning |
| You keep buying upgrades without improving results | Spending is not tied to the failure that ends runs | Track the last three failed expeditions and upgrade the recurring bottleneck |
How to choose between exploring slowly and diving fast
Use slow exploration whenever the cave is providing information you do not yet have. That includes the first visit to a branch, any route with confusing forks, and any section where a hazard could force a detour. Mark the path, collect only what fits the plan and leave with a usable mental model.
Use fast movement after the route has become familiar and the objective is specific. A fast dive is not automatically reckless; it is efficient when you have already paid the information cost on an earlier run. The mistake is applying a farming pace to an unmapped cave or an exploratory pace after your oxygen reserve has become critical.

What the official information does not establish
No authoritative source publishes item capacities, upgrade costs, enemy health or damage values, oxygen-drain rates, a universal oxygen percentage, or a complete optimal upgrade order. Be cautious with guides that present those figures as universal unless they identify the exact version, platform and conditions. The reliable principles are broader: procedural caves reward markers and route knowledge, oxygen must cover extraction, resources matter only when returned, and upgrades should address the bottleneck that repeatedly ends your dives.
