What is Norellraptor barsboldi?
Norellraptor barsboldi is a newly named member of Microraptorinae, a group of small feathered dromaeosaurid dinosaurs. ScienceAlert reports that the exceptionally preserved specimen was found in northeastern China and measured 57 centimeters long. Its bones suggest it had not finished growing, so that length describes this specimen rather than the adult size of the species.
The bones are better preserved than the feathers. Plumage on the forelimbs and tail appears adapted for flight, while feathers on other parts of the body are simpler. Those features are relevant to aerial adaptation, but they do not establish whether this animal flew, or whether it could sustain powered flight. ScienceAlert’s account of the discovery describes the specimen and summarizes the researchers’ interpretation.
Why do researchers think flight-related traits may have evolved more than once?
The study compares reconstructed sequences of flight-related traits in Microraptorinae and Avialae, the lineage that includes birds. The sequences differ consistently, according to the authors as quoted by ScienceAlert. That difference suggests the traits did not assemble in the same order in both lineages.

The authors also consider histology—the microscopic structure of bone—in the forelimbs. Their interpretation is that it may point to a distinctive limb-growth pattern in microraptorines. Taken together, the character reconstructions and histological evidence support the possibility that microraptorines and the bird lineage experienced separate selective regimes as flight-related adaptations emerged.
This is an evolutionary interpretation of fossil evidence, not a direct observation of the animals’ development or flight. It depends on how fossils are classified on the evolutionary tree and how the order of ancestral traits is reconstructed. The authors themselves caution that the relationship between bird flight and microraptorine aerial adaptations remains controversial from both functional and phylogenetic perspectives.

Does this prove flight evolved twice?
No. The findings support the idea that flight-related adaptations arose independently in Microraptorinae and Avialae, but they do not conclusively establish two entirely separate origins of flight. In particular, evidence for different sequences of flight-related traits is not by itself proof that both groups achieved the same kind of powered flight.
The distinction matters: a fossil can preserve anatomical features consistent with aerial adaptation without revealing exactly how the animal moved through the air. The study’s argument concerns how traits may have evolved across lineages; it does not demonstrate the flight performance of this individual.

What the discovery adds—and what remains open
Norellraptor barsboldi gives researchers another fossil to consider when tracing the evolution of feathers, limbs and aerial adaptations. Its value lies in the combination of preserved anatomy and the study’s comparison between microraptorines and birds, rather than in settling the broader debate.
- Supported by the study: the reconstructed sequences of flight-related traits in Microraptorinae and Avialae differ, and forelimb bone histology may indicate a distinct microraptorine growth pattern.
- Still uncertain: how the groups’ aerial adaptations functioned, how they are related evolutionarily, and whether the evidence demonstrates separate origins of powered flight.
The study’s measured conclusion is therefore narrower than the headline claim might suggest: flight-related adaptations may have assembled more than once, but the fossil record and current reconstructions do not resolve every aspect of how bird and microraptorine flight are connected.
