Start with Home Alone. It is the series’ first episode, it establishes the short survivor-narrated psychological-horror format, and Steam lists it as free to play. That makes it the safest introduction and the least expensive way to find out whether the series’ slow-burn tension suits you.

If you already know you want a particular kind of fear, choose by setting instead: Norwood Hitchhike for road-trip and motel danger, Carson House for a house-sitting and surveillance scenario, Ironbark Lookout for wilderness isolation, or Woodbury Getaway for a friends-on-holiday setup built around online co-op.

What Fears to Fathom is

The official site describes Fears to Fathom as “an episodic psychological horror game where each episode unveils a short story narrated by the ones who survived.” That sentence explains both the structure and the appeal. Each chapter is a self-contained account presented from a survivor’s perspective, and the horror grows out of an ordinary situation rather than a conventional monster-hunting premise.

The situations are recognisable: staying home while parents are away, driving between towns, looking after someone else’s house, working at a remote outpost, or taking a weekend trip with friends. The series turns those familiar circumstances into pressure cookers. You are usually asked to observe, read, travel, wait, and decide what to do while small details make the environment feel less safe.

There is no publisher-issued runtime ranking or universal “best episode.” A better comparison is the kind of setting and social situation that makes you uncomfortable, whether you want to play alone or with others, and how much you want to spend before committing to more episodes.

Quick chooser: pick by the kind of horror you want

Episode Choose it when you want Useful context
Home Alone Domestic isolation, messages, and a low-cost introduction Free to play on Steam; designed as the series’ starting point
Norwood Hitchhike Road-trip anxiety, an interstate journey, and motel tension Best match for travel and stranger-danger horror
Carson House House-sitting, an occupied home, and surveillance-minded unease Best match for home-invasion-style tension
Ironbark Lookout Wilderness isolation and a remote work outpost Online co-op was available at launch
Woodbury Getaway A group rental, college friends, and cooperative play Launched as online co-op; a single-player update was planned after release

Which Fears to Fathom episode should I play first?

Start with Home Alone if you are new to the series

Home Alone follows Miles, a 14-year-old left at home while his parents are away. The setup is immediately legible: the house should be familiar and secure, yet being the only person there changes how every sound, message, and unexplained event feels. Its emphasis on texting and observation gives you a clear introduction to the series’ style without requiring knowledge of earlier episodes.

It is also the practical entry point. Steam lists the episode as free to play, so you can test the format without paying for a bundle or guessing how much you will enjoy a short psychological-horror story. If you finish it and want more, the later chapters can be selected according to their settings rather than any mandatory story dependency.

Choose Norwood Hitchhike for road-trip horror

Norwood Hitchhike is the answer to “Which episode is best for road-trip horror?” Its protagonist is Holly Gardner, 19, who is driving on an interstate and ends up facing an unplanned motel stay in Norwood Valley. The fear comes from being away from familiar support, having limited control over where you stop, and trying to judge strangers and places while travelling.

Select it when the idea of a long drive turning into a problem is more unsettling to you than an empty house. The motel setting also changes the rhythm of the series: instead of treating one known home as the whole world, the episode makes route decisions, a temporary room, and the people encountered along the way part of the threat.

Pick Carson House for home-invasion and surveillance tension

Carson House centers on Noah Baker, 18, who is house-sitting for a media personality. That premise places you in a property that is not truly yours. You are responsible for maintaining someone else’s space while also wondering who may know the house, its routines, or the fact that you are there.

This is the strongest choice if your preferred horror involves an occupied home, signs of intrusion, or the feeling that ordinary domestic details are being watched. The house-sitting arrangement gives the episode a different social pressure from Home Alone: Noah is not simply waiting for parents to return, but performing a temporary job in a location with another person’s expectations and private life attached to it.

Play Ironbark Lookout for woods and outpost isolation

If you are asking, “Which Fears to Fathom game is set in the woods?”, choose Ironbark Lookout. Jack Nelson, 24, is transferred to a fire lookout in Ironbark State Park. The location removes the conveniences and witnesses of a neighbourhood and replaces them with a remote observation post surrounded by wilderness.

The episode suits players who find distance itself frightening: help is not close, visibility matters, and the job requires you to remain in an isolated place. It is also the first chapter in this comparison with an explicitly documented online-co-op launch condition. The official announcement for its October 20, 2023 release noted online co-op at launch, making it a natural option when you want the outpost atmosphere with another player rather than strictly solo play.

Choose Woodbury Getaway for a group-trip scenario

Woodbury Getaway follows Sydney Harper, 23, as she plans a weekend rental with college friends. Its social setup is different from the earlier episodes: the characters begin with a shared plan and a group context, so the tension is shaped by being together, coordinating, and deciding what to do when the trip stops feeling ordinary.

An update adding single-player play was planned after release, so check the current Steam listing for the mode available in your edition before buying if you intend to play alone. For a group that wants a contemporary co-op horror scenario rather than a solitary account, this is the most direct fit.

What order should I play Fears to Fathom?

For the clearest view of how the series develops, use release order:

  1. Home Alone — released July 2, 2021.
  2. Norwood Hitchhike — release announcement dated January 6, 2022.
  3. Carson House — release announcement dated January 9, 2023.
  4. Ironbark Lookout — release announcement dated October 20, 2023.
  5. Woodbury Getaway — release announcement dated September 12, 2024.

Official Steam announcements later link Scratch Creek as a subsequent episode. The available official information does not establish a requirement to complete the chapters in sequence, so release order is a presentation preference, not a story prerequisite. Playing in order lets you see the settings and presentation change over time; starting with a later episode is reasonable when its premise is the one you actually want.

How the episodes differ in practice

Setting is the biggest separator

The series moves through five distinct spaces: a suburban home, an interstate and motel, an occupied house, a fire lookout, and a group rental. Those places create different kinds of vulnerability. A home concentrates attention on doors, rooms, messages, and routines. A journey adds uncertainty about where you can safely stop. A house-sitting job makes another person’s property part of the problem. A lookout trades neighbourhood familiarity for distance and exposure. A group rental introduces shared decisions and the possibility that cooperation will not remove fear.

The social situation changes the pressure

Each protagonist has a different reason to remain in the situation. Miles is a teenager left behind by absent parents. Holly is a young driver dealing with an unexpected stop. Noah is temporarily responsible for a client’s house. Jack has been transferred to a remote job. Sydney is organising a trip with friends. These are not interchangeable excuses for a scare; they determine what the character can reasonably do, whom they can contact, and why leaving may not be simple.

Interaction details are not standardised across the series

Home Alone’s official description specifically calls out texting and observation. Later episodes add activities suited to their settings, but the official pages do not provide a uniform feature matrix covering every chapter. Do not assume that an interaction listed for one episode appears in all five. If a particular activity or mode is important to you, verify the current store description for that episode before purchase.

Cost, access, and multiplayer decisions

Is Home Alone free?

Yes. Steam lists Home Alone as free to play. That is a one-episode access fact, not a statement that the entire series is free. The other chapters are separate Steam releases, and their current prices are not specified here; check the live store pages for your region because prices and promotions can change.

Which episodes support co-op?

The official announcements specifically document online-co-op launch conditions for Ironbark Lookout and Woodbury Getaway. Ironbark Lookout had online co-op at its October 2023 launch. Woodbury Getaway launched as online co-op only, with a single-player update planned after release. Those statements describe launch conditions, so confirm the present mode listing if you are buying after an update or planning a solo session.

What if I want to play everything solo?

Begin with Home Alone, then choose among the other episodes after checking their current mode descriptions. The documented information does not provide a single, permanent solo/co-op matrix for every release, and Woodbury Getaway’s launch configuration was explicitly co-op-first. Treat the store listing for your platform and date as the authority for what you can launch alone.

A decision guide for different players

If you want the lowest-risk purchase

Play Home Alone first. You can sample the pacing, survivor-narration approach, and ordinary-situation setup without an entry fee. Pay attention to whether reading messages and watching a familiar environment become tense is enjoyable to you; that response is more useful than a generic ranking.

If you want the most travel-focused story

Choose Norwood Hitchhike. Holly’s interstate drive and forced motel stay make movement, temporary shelter, and encounters with strangers the defining ingredients.

If you want a house that feels watched

Choose Carson House. Noah’s house-sitting role gives the home-invasion and surveillance angle a clear reason to exist: you are occupying someone else’s property and trying to understand what is happening around it.

If you want the woods

Choose Ironbark Lookout. Jack’s fire-lookout assignment puts the story in Ironbark State Park and makes remote work the central source of vulnerability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your group wants to play together

Choose Woodbury Getaway after confirming that the current build supports the way your group intends to play. Its premise is a weekend rental with college friends, and its initial release was exclusively online co-op.

What the available information cannot tell you

  • There is no authoritative runtime ranking. Official pages do not provide a uniform episode-length statistic, so avoid choosing solely on an assumed number of hours.
  • There is no publisher-issued best-episode ranking. “Best” depends on whether you prefer domestic, travel, house-sitting, wilderness, or group-trip horror.
  • There is no complete official feature matrix. Home Alone’s texting and observation are documented, while later setting-specific activities are not presented in one standard comparison chart.
  • Prices can change. Only Home Alone’s free-to-play Steam status is established here; check current regional prices for the paid episodes.
  • Mode availability can change after updates. The co-op details for Ironbark Lookout and Woodbury Getaway are tied to their launch announcements, so verify the live listing before inviting friends or planning a solo run.

Recommended path

Play Home Alone first, then branch according to the fear you want next: Norwood Hitchhike for a road and motel, Carson House for a watched home, Ironbark Lookout for the woods and a documented co-op option, or Woodbury Getaway for a friends’ rental built around online co-op. If you prefer to experience the anthology’s progression rather than optimise for a setting, follow the documented release order from Home Alone through Woodbury Getaway.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
