FDM-Printed Liquid Channels vs. Silicone Tubing: Which Is Better?

Silicone tubing is usually the better starting point for a flexible, replaceable liquid line. FDM-printed channels become attractive when the passage must be built into a custom body, follow a complex fixed path, or connect directly to printed features. Neither option is automatically watertight, chemically safe, cleanable, or pressure-rated: the correct choice depends on the liquid, dimensions, pressure, temperature, exposure time, contact requirements, and fabrication details.

Use the comparison below to choose an approach, then validate the exact tube, filament, geometry, and process under the conditions your device will see.

Quick decision: printed channel or silicone tube?

Requirement Better starting point Reason and qualification
A line that bends around obstacles Silicone tubing Its flexibility lets you route a separate line without redesigning the main body. The tubing can be replaced independently.
A fluid path integrated into a custom housing FDM-printed channel The passage can be created as part of the housing, manifold, or fixture, provided the channel dimensions and wall integrity are achievable.
Very small channels Neither without testing A 2017 review reported that FDM was not suitable for cross-sections on the order of 100 µm or less in the printing context it examined; nozzle and extruded-filament dimensions limit resolution. Tubing must also be selected by its actual inner diameter.
Known pressure requirement Product-specific comparison Printed-channel leakage depends on geometry, wall integrity, orientation, and process settings. Tubing must be checked against the exact product’s working-pressure rating.
Documented fluid-contact specifications Silicone tubing, if the grade fits Manufacturers publish datasheets for particular formulations and sizes. A product rating cannot be transferred to generic silicone or to a printed polymer.
Frequent replacement or maintenance Silicone tubing A separate tube can be removed and replaced without remaking an integrated channel-bearing part.
One-piece custom interfaces FDM-printed channel Printed ports, manifolds, and mounting features can be designed together, reducing the number of separate joints to manage.

For a flexible routed line, begin with a silicone grade whose manufacturer documents compatibility and ratings for the actual service. For a compact prototype with an integrated path, consider FDM only after confirming that the channel scale is printable and that the completed part passes leakage tests.

What an FDM liquid channel actually is

Fused deposition modeling (FDM), also called fused filament fabrication, builds a part layer by layer from a thermoplastic filament. A liquid channel may be modeled as a void inside the part, a groove closed by a bonded cover, or a network connected to printed ports. The design can include bends, manifolds, reservoirs, mounting bosses, and seals in one custom body.

That integration is the main advantage: the liquid path can occupy space that would be difficult to route with a loose tube. It can also place ports exactly where sensors, valves, or other components need them. The trade-off is that the channel is inseparable from the printed structure. A failed passage generally means modifying or reprinting the channel-bearing part rather than swapping a length of hose.

FDM creates a surface made from deposited roads and layers, not a continuously molded wall. Small gaps, incomplete fusion, seams, and stair-stepping can form leak paths. A review in Analytical Chemistry (2017) discusses resolution and transparency limits for FDM fluidics and notes that nozzle and extruded-filament dimensions constrain fine channels. Treat its 100 µm-or-less observation as a finding for the reviewed printing context, not as a permanent cutoff for every modern printer, nozzle, or material.

What silicone tubing contributes

Silicone tubing is a separate elastomeric tube supplied in selected inner diameters, wall thicknesses, lengths, and grades. Its flexibility allows a path to be routed by bending the tube rather than by printing every turn into a rigid body. A medical-tubing overview from Saint-Gobain Medical describes silicone tubing for fluid-transfer uses and its translucent appearance.

Because the tube is a separate component, maintenance is straightforward: disconnect it, inspect it, and install a replacement without rebuilding the surrounding fixture. That modularity also introduces joints, clamps, barbs, or compression fittings that must be designed and tested. A tube that kinks, collapses, stretches over a fitting, or is bent below its permitted radius can fail even when its material is chemically compatible.

“Silicone” is a material family, not a universal specification. Formulation, reinforcement, curing, dimensions, and manufacturing controls differ among products. Select by the exact datasheet, not by the material name alone.

Geometry and integration

When a printed path wins

Choose an FDM channel when the path must be embedded in a housing, cross several fixed interfaces, or share a compact manifold with other features. A printed body can place ports, bolt holes, sensor seats, and channels in a single coordinate system. Complex external routing can be reduced when the channel is part of the structure.

Design the passage with the printer’s real capabilities in mind. Layer height, nozzle diameter, line width, bridge behavior, overhangs, seam placement, and support removal all affect the final void. A nominally round CAD channel may print with a different cross-section, rough internal walls, or partially closed openings. Keep critical ports accessible for inspection and provide a way to purge uncured residue, support material, or debris.

When tubing is easier to route

Use tubing when the line needs to move, flex, or route around changing obstacles. Bending the tube is usually simpler than reorienting an entire print to create the same path. A separate line also allows a failed section to be exchanged while the printed housing remains in service.

Plan the route so the tube is supported without sharp bends or abrasion. Specify the inner diameter for required flow and the wall thickness for the pressure and handling loads. Confirm that fittings match the tube dimensions; a nominal size from one product line is not proof of compatibility with another.

Leakage and pressure: why ratings do not transfer

Leakage in an FDM channel is a combined design-and-process problem. Wall thickness, perimeter count, infill strategy, layer adhesion, print orientation, temperature, speed, cooling, seam location, post-processing, and the channel’s shape all influence whether liquid finds a path through the part. The same CAD file can behave differently after a change in printer, filament, nozzle, or slicing profile.

A 2021 study in Micromachines reported that tested FDM profiles were susceptible to leakage when flow generated 4,000 Pa in the evaluated configurations without pre- or post-processing. That figure is an experimental condition, not a universal safe-pressure ceiling or a rating for your printer. A 2025 study using micro-computed tomography in ACS Applied Polymer Materials further examines leak pathways in optimized 3D-printed fluidics, reinforcing the need to inspect the actual part rather than infer performance from nominal dimensions.

For tubing, use the working-pressure value for the exact product, size, temperature, and service. For example, the Saint-Gobain Versilon SPT-70 FB IB specification page lists size-specific maximum working pressures from 7.6 to 9.3 bar across the displayed sizes. Those values apply to that product and its stated dimensions, not to every silicone tube. A pressure rating also does not remove the need to check pulsation, vacuum, fitting loads, temperature, chemical exposure, and aging.

Chemical compatibility

Silicone considerations

Silicone is often selected for fluid transfer, but it is not resistant to every liquid. DuPont’s Liveo silicone-tubing technical document describes swelling with certain nonpolar organic solvents and degradation in strong acids or bases. The document quotes a commercial-elastomer operating-temperature range of −80 °C to +215 °C; treat that as a document-level range for applicable commercial silicone elastomers, not as a guarantee for every tube, fitting, or operating cycle.

Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact liquid concentration, temperature, contact time, cleaning agent, and pressure. Swelling can change dimensions and fitting retention; chemical attack can reduce strength without an obvious leak at first.

FDM polymer considerations

FDM compatibility depends on the polymer, additives, colorants, thermal history, surface condition, and the liquid. A filament marketed for general printing is not automatically suitable for prolonged fluid contact. Printed surfaces can retain residues in microscopic voids, and any sealant or coating added after printing introduces another material to evaluate.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For either approach, make a compatibility test with the actual liquid and a representative sample before committing a full device. Record exposure time, temperature, appearance, mass or dimensional changes, and any loss of flexibility or strength. If the liquid is hazardous, reactive, or valuable, use a containment strategy that limits the consequences of a leak.

Temperature, cleaning, and contact requirements

Temperature limits are product-specific. The silicone document cited above gives a broad commercial range, while the Versilon SPT-70 FB IB page recommends a maximum operating temperature of 160 °C for that product. These figures illustrate why a generic “silicone temperature rating” is misleading: grades, dimensions, pressure, and exposure conditions differ.

FDM temperature performance depends on the filament’s thermal properties and on the printed geometry. Heat can soften a thermoplastic, relax a seal, distort a thin wall, or change layer adhesion. A printed channel that is leak-free at room temperature may behave differently when heated or cooled repeatedly.

Cleaning is equally dependent on the exact materials and method. A tube may have manufacturer-published sterilization or cleaning information, but you must verify the grade and cycle. A printed channel with blind passages, rough internal walls, or trapped volumes can be difficult to rinse and inspect. If the application requires validated cleaning, sterility, or controlled extractables, do not infer compliance from appearance or from the word “silicone.” The Versilon product page also notes that restrictions and limitations can apply to its food-contact statements; read the complete product documentation for the intended jurisdiction and use.

Visibility and inspection

Translucent tubing can let you see bubbles, sediment, discoloration, or an empty line during operation. The Saint-Gobain overview describes its silicone tubing as translucent, but opacity and clarity vary by grade, wall thickness, and additives.

FDM channels are not necessarily transparent. Opaque walls can hide a blockage or a growing leak, and internal roughness may make visual inspection through a port unreliable. If inspection is important, design access points, removable covers, or external indicators into the system. Do not assume that a clear filament produces a clear, optically inspectable channel after printing.

How to design and validate an FDM channel

  1. Define service conditions. Write down the liquid, concentration, temperature range, operating and peak pressure, flow target, duty cycle, cleaning method, and any food, medical, or contamination constraints.
  2. Set the channel geometry. Choose the required cross-section, bend radii, ports, wall thickness, and sealing surfaces. Avoid dimensions near the printer’s demonstrated limit; the 2017 review’s 100 µm-or-less observation shows why very fine passages require a different manufacturing approach or extensive validation.
  3. Choose a material deliberately. Obtain the filament manufacturer’s chemical and thermal information. Include additives, colorants, coatings, and any adhesive or gasket material in the compatibility assessment.
  4. Orient the part for wall integrity. Place layers and seams so the pressure-bearing walls receive favorable extrusion paths. Minimize unsupported roofs and inaccessible cavities that could trap debris.
  5. Control the print process. Record nozzle, layer height, line width, temperatures, speed, cooling, perimeter count, infill, and post-processing. A process change invalidates assumptions based on an earlier print.
  6. Inspect before wet testing. Check ports, seams, thin walls, bridges, and internal openings. Remove loose particles and verify that the channel is open along its full path.
  7. Test with a safe fluid first. Use a containment setup and gradually increase pressure while watching for seepage, wetting, bubbles, or deformation. Test at the intended temperature after room-temperature behavior is understood.
  8. Repeat on production-intent parts. Validate more than one print and include the orientation and settings you will actually use. A single successful prototype does not establish a general pressure rating.

How to specify and validate silicone tubing

  1. Identify the liquid and service profile. Provide the supplier with composition, concentration, temperature, pressure, vacuum exposure, flow, cleaning agents, and contact duration.
  2. Select dimensions. Specify inner diameter, outer diameter or wall thickness, length, minimum bend requirement, and fitting style. Do not substitute a different size without checking its pressure and flow implications.
  3. Check the datasheet. Confirm working pressure at the operating temperature, temperature limits, chemical compatibility, manufacturing tolerances, and any contact or sterilization statements.
  4. Design the connections. Match barbs, compression fittings, clamps, and seals to the tube dimensions and material. Ensure that assembly does not cut, over-expand, or kink the tube.
  5. Route and support the line. Avoid abrasion, sharp bends, compression points, and unsupported spans that can pull on fittings. Leave enough length for maintenance without creating loops that trap air.
  6. Pressure-test the assembled system. Test the tube, fittings, clamps, and housing together. Hold the intended pressure for the required duration and inspect every joint.
  7. Establish a replacement interval. Track discoloration, swelling, cracking, stiffness, and permanent deformation. Replace tubing based on observed condition and the manufacturer’s service guidance, not on the material name alone.

Comparison by common project scenario

Benchtop pump with a movable reservoir

Silicone tubing is generally the practical choice because the reservoir, pump, and collection vessel may move relative to one another. A flexible line can be rerouted or replaced without reprinting the apparatus. Select its inner diameter, pressure rating, and chemical grade for the actual fluid.

Compact manifold inside a printed instrument

An FDM channel can reduce external hoses and combine several ports in one body. Use it only when the channel dimensions are comfortably printable and you can pressure-test every passage. Consider a replaceable tube insert if maintenance or contamination control is important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-consequence or regulated fluid handling

Neither a generic print nor generic silicone is sufficient. Require traceable material documentation, compatibility evidence, cleaning or sterilization information, and a validation plan appropriate to the application. Product-specific tubing documentation may be easier to obtain, but that does not eliminate system-level testing.

Rapid geometry experiment

FDM is useful for quickly changing channel layouts, port locations, and mounting features. Treat each geometry and process revision as a new prototype. If the experiment reveals that the path needs frequent rerouting, move the liquid path to replaceable tubing rather than repeatedly redesigning the body.

A practical selection checklist

  • Is the path fixed and integrated, or does it need to bend and move?
  • What are the required inner diameter, wall thickness, flow rate, and minimum bend radius?
  • What are the normal, peak, and vacuum pressures?
  • What temperature range and number of thermal cycles will occur?
  • Which liquid, concentration, cleaning agent, and exposure duration must the material tolerate?
  • Can you inspect, flush, dry, and replace the liquid path?
  • Are food-contact, medical, sterile, or contamination-control requirements involved?
  • For FDM, have you validated the actual printer, nozzle, filament, orientation, slicing settings, and post-processing?
  • For tubing, do the exact product datasheet and fitting dimensions cover your service conditions?
  • What is the containment and recovery plan if the path leaks?

Bottom line

Choose silicone tubing when flexibility, straightforward routing, visibility, and independent replacement matter. Choose an FDM-printed channel when integration and custom geometry outweigh the difficulty of printing, inspecting, and validating a pressure-bearing passage. The decisive evidence comes from the exact liquid, dimensions, material formulation, operating conditions, and tested assembly—not from broad claims that all printed plastics are watertight or all silicone is chemically safe.
