In Fate/Grand Order, strong turns come from matching your party to enemy classes, choosing Command Cards for the job at hand, and timing skills and Noble Phantasms rather than using them automatically. New players can make steady progress by advancing the main story, strengthening a small core roster, and borrowing a Support Servant to cover gaps.
How to get started in Fate/Grand Order
FGO uses turn-based battles. In the tactical phase, you can activate Servant skills and Master skills; in the command phase, you choose three Command Cards to determine your attacks. Before choosing cards, check enemy classes and the visible effectiveness indicators. A favorable class matchup deals more damage and takes less, so class advantage can matter more than simply bringing your highest-level Servant.

For a compact starting plan, progress through the main story and missions, use the rewards to level a few Servants, and gather materials for their later upgrades. The official Japanese guide says story and mission rewards include resources used for summoning and strengthening Servants; exact rewards and their timing can differ by service and region. Each card color supports a different goal. Treat them as tactical choices, not a fixed ranking: the best card is the one that helps your current turn or sets up the next one.

The first Command Card you select can also grant a type-specific bonus to the chain. Selecting three cards of the same color creates a chain; selecting three cards belonging to the same Servant grants an Extra Attack. When to use Noble Phantasms and skills
A Noble Phantasm (NP) is a Servant’s special attack or effect, activated when its NP gauge reaches 100%. The gauge can rise through battle actions, skills, and taking damage. The English combat guide says that using two or more Noble Phantasms in the same turn intensifies their effects, so consider whether a single NP is enough or whether coordinating multiple NPs is worth the setup.

Skills can strengthen allies or weaken enemies, but they have cooldowns. Use them when their effect can change the turn—for example, to improve a key attack or help manage a dangerous enemy—rather than pressing every available skill immediately. Command Spells are another powerful support option. The Japanese manual describes a continue option that consumes all three marks and says one mark naturally restores each day. Because screens and operating instructions can change, check the current in-game display before relying on a particular Command Spell effect or cost.

How to build a good team
Start with the enemy’s class lineup, then decide what your party needs: favorable class matchups, enough role coverage, or a borrowed Servant to fill a roster gap. Use the in-battle WEAK and RESIST indicators as a quick check rather than guessing. A Support Servant can be borrowed without counting against party cost, according to the official Japanese party guide. Master equipment also supplies additional support skills.
- Prioritize class advantage: Choose Servants whose classes are effective against the enemies you expect to face.
- Cover a roster gap: Borrow a Support Servant when your own roster lacks a useful class or capability.
- Account for Master skills: Treat Master equipment as part of the team’s available support, not just the Servants’ skills.

Which upgrades should you prioritize?
Strengthening Servants improves what your existing roster can do; summoning is not the only route to a more capable team. The official enhancement guide describes these improvements:

Are new-player and returning-player offers still available?
Offers depend on the service and date. A Japanese official guide dated March 29, 2025 described a tutorial summon that guaranteed one four-star Servant and one four-star Craft Essence, and a post-Fuyuki Special Summon for eligible Masters that offered a choice of one five-star Servant from a pool of 32. It also described Spirit Origin Leaves as an exchange route for some past welfare Servants and related items. Those details describe the Japanese service at that date—not a current or universal offer. Check the notice for your own service before planning around a summon, eligibility rule, or exchange.
The same dated guide listed 14 eligible four-star Servants in its Japanese tutorial-summon pool. That was a count of eligible options in that offer, not a general count of four-star Servants in the game. Fate/Grand Order Official Japanese Website
What should you check before installing?
The official English site lists FGO as free to play with in-app purchases. Spending is not required to understand the basic combat systems covered here. The site lists iOS 15+ and Android 7.0+ alongside device and processor requirements, and says at least 3 GB of RAM is necessary. It also warns that some devices may still fail to run the game even if they meet the listed OS version.
