Fate/Grand Order battles alternate between preparing with skills and selecting three Command Cards. Quick, Arts, and Buster cards each favor a different goal; matching cards can add an Extra Attack or a color-chain bonus. The best choice depends on the Servants available, their class matchups, your Noble Phantasm (NP) charge, and how close enemies are to attacking.
How a battle turn works
A battle cycles through preparation, command selection, your Servants’ actions, and the enemy’s response. You make two kinds of decisions before attacks resolve:

- Tactical Phase: Choose available Servant skills and a Master action. These can shape the turn before you commit to attacks.
- Command Phase: Select three Command Cards from the hand shown for your Servants. The cards determine the attacks and bonuses for the turn.
- Attack resolution: Your Servants act, then the enemy takes its turn. Afterward, the battle returns to the Tactical Phase.
The official Fate/Grand Order Official USA gameplay guide describes the system as “easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master”: the basic sequence is simple, but the card and matchup choices affect what you can do next.

What Quick, Arts, and Buster cards do
Use card color as a guide to the immediate benefit you want. It is not a universal ranking: the right card depends on whether you need damage now, NP charge, or Critical Stars for a later opportunity.

| Card | Main benefit | When it may suit your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Quick | Helps gain Critical Stars. | When building toward critical hits is more useful than prioritizing immediate damage or NP charge. |
| Arts | Fills the NP Gauge faster. | When you want to move a Servant closer to using a Noble Phantasm. |
| Buster | Deals more damage. | When the priority is stronger damage from the selected attacks. |
These are the benefits described on the official battle-system page. The cards are attack choices within the same battle system, not separate modes.
When matching cards adds a bonus
Two kinds of matching can matter when you choose three cards. If all three cards belong to the same Servant, that Servant receives an Extra Attack. If all three cards share a color, they trigger a color chain: Quick for Critical Stars, Arts for NP Gauge, or Buster for damage. When the available hand permits it, the same three cards can match both one Servant and one color, earning both bonuses.

Choose a match because its benefit serves your turn, not just because the cards line up. For example, an Arts Chain helps with charge, while a Buster Chain favors damage. If the needed match is unavailable, choosing a useful mix is still a valid plan.

Each Servant has a Noble Phantasm, which becomes available when its NP Gauge reaches 100%, according to the official battle-system guide. Arts cards are a straightforward way to build charge; selecting three Arts cards creates an Arts Chain, which the official beginner guide says gives participating Servants 20% NP Gauge.

The beginner guide also explains that NP level begins at 1 and can rise to 5 by combining identical Servants. In that guide’s published explanation, a higher NP level increases NP strength and permits charge above 100%: up to 200% at NP levels 2–4 and 300% at level 5. Charge at 200% or 300% is called Overcharge there, and its added effect depends on the individual Noble Phantasm. These level and ceiling details reflect that guide’s published guidance; check the live game for the rules and interface applicable to your version.
Account for class matchups and enemy charge
Card color is only one part of a good turn. Class affinity changes both damage dealt and damage received: class advantage means you deal more damage and take less, while disadvantage means you deal less and take more. Check the class matchup before committing to an attack or leaving a Servant exposed. The official system page explains the advantage and disadvantage effects.

Also watch enemy Charge Gauges. The official gameplay guide warns that enemies’ gauges rise during combat and a full gauge precedes a powerful attack. Treat a nearly full gauge as a planning signal: consider your skills, Master action, and who is likely to face that attack rather than focusing only on the damage your cards can deal this turn.
What to do when a fight goes badly
Servant and Master skills are part of your tactical options, and reserve members can replace an opening Servant who falls. If the party is defeated, the older official How to Play guide documents a continuation option: spend either three Command Spells or one Saint Quartz to restore Servant HP and NP gauges. That guide-specific instruction makes continuation a resource cost, not a free retry; consult the live game for current prompts and options.
