Fate/EXTRA Record is a rebuilt version of the 2010 PSP role-playing game Fate/EXTRA. The worldwide release is scheduled for January 28, 2027, with versions announced for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam. It keeps the Moon Holy Grail War premise but replaces the original battle approach with customizable Command Card decks, expanded Arena exploration, revised story content, redesigned characters, new Japanese voiceover, and a new musical score.

This guide explains what is confirmed, how the new systems fit together, what changes from the PSP game, and what a first-time player should know before choosing a platform or edition.

What is Fate/EXTRA Record?

Fate/EXTRA Record is a full remake rather than a simple port or visual upgrade. It returns to the setting of the Moon Holy Grail War, a tournament in which Masters and their Servants fight for the Holy Grail. A defeated Master is eliminated from the tournament and loses their life, so the story’s battles carry consequences beyond ordinary arena matches.

The project follows the original game’s central premise while rebuilding its presentation and combat. Official descriptions position it as a new entry point for people who have not played the PSP release as well as a substantially revised experience for returning fans. PlayStation’s 2026 announcement described the remake as intended to be accessible to newcomers while still offering a fresh experience to players who know the original.

#1 Best Overall
Fate EXTRA/Record: Limited Edition - PlayStation 5
  • LIMITED EDITION includes an artbook with over 100 pages and a 3 disc soundtrack within a SteelBook
  • Your Fate, Revisited - Based on Fate/EXTRA, released in 2010, this compelling narrative has been revised and vastly expanded, adding new layers and characterizations, enhancing one of the franchise’s core entries with even more depth and intrigue.
  • Master and Commander - All-new revamped card-based battle system allows for deeper strategies for surviving the war. Unique abilities for both Master and Servant also add new elements that improve upon the original game’s battle system.
  • An Unbreakable Bond - Three different Servants offer three different combat approaches to suit your style. As you continue to develop your relationship, you’ll discover new cards and abilities and learn more about these heroic spirits... and their own desires.
  • Powerful, New Presentation - Redesigned for modern platforms, character designs and visuals have been given a massive upgrade. Fully voiced with all-new Japanese voiceover and an epic new score, this is the ultimate entry of record.

The Fate franchise had more than 100 titles across games, anime, novels, manga, mobile applications, and other media by August 2026. That number is a franchise-wide count, not the number of role-playing games you need to complete before starting Record.

Physical editions, digital editions, and prices

Standard editions

Marvelous USA/XSEED Games announced a standard physical price of $59.99 for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch editions. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition is announced at $69.99. These are publisher-announced prices for the United States in 2026; regional pricing, taxes, retailer discounts, and later changes can differ.

The publisher says physical preorders will be offered through its own online store and participating retailers. That announcement does not guarantee stock at every retailer or in every country, so availability should be checked locally rather than inferred from the US announcement.

Digital Deluxe edition

PlayStation Blog describes a digital deluxe package containing the base game, cosmetic costumes, an arranged Fate/EXTRA music pack, a digital art book, and a digital soundtrack. Steam also lists a deluxe edition and arranged background-music pack. The exact contents and pricing can vary by storefront, and the available listings do not establish that every bonus is identical on every platform.

How the new battle system works

The remake’s main mechanical change is its Command Card system. Instead of relying on the PSP game’s original battle approach, you build a deck of commands for your chosen Servant and select cards during fights. Cards are earned through Arena treasure boxes and by defeating powerful enemies, so deck development is tied to exploration and progression rather than being a one-time menu choice.

Card type Primary function How to think about it
Attack Deals damage Your direct way to pressure an opponent and finish a round
Guard Builds shields that reduce incoming damage Useful when reading an enemy’s attack pattern or protecting a vulnerable turn
Skill Provides a unique effect Creates tactical options beyond raw damage and defense

The important distinction for newcomers is that the deck is not a universal loadout. Commands differ by Servant, and each Servant has a distinct combat style. A sequence that works well for an aggressive damage dealer may be poorly suited to a Servant built around defense, control, or ability effects. Treat deck construction as part of learning your character rather than as a solved recipe that transfers unchanged between the roster.

Building a deck in practice

  1. Explore the Arena before major duels. Search treasure boxes and fight stronger enemies to expand the cards available to your Servant.
  2. Identify the Servant’s preferred rhythm. Determine whether your current tools favor attacking, shielding, skill effects, or a mixture of those roles.
  3. Keep defensive options available. Guard cards are not passive filler; they create shields that can reduce damage when an enemy’s attack is dangerous.
  4. Use skills to change the situation. Skill cards are intended to provide effects that cannot be replaced by simply adding more attacks.
  5. Reassess after upgrades and relationship events. New cards and abilities can change which combinations are most useful.

The official material does not provide a complete card list, deck-size rule, draw algorithm, or final balance values. Any detailed build guides published before launch should therefore be treated as provisional until the finished game is available.

Arena exploration and character growth

Exploration takes place in the Arena, where the player navigates hazards, defeats enemies, and searches for rewards. The Arena is not just a route between boss fights: it is where you strengthen your Servant and obtain the cards that expand your combat options.

Traps create a second concern alongside combat. A careful run weighs the value of exploring for treasure against the risk of entering another encounter with depleted resources or an unfavorable matchup. The available descriptions do not specify every trap type or a universal penalty, so the safest confirmed advice is to explore deliberately and use the Arena as preparation for the decisive battles.

The decisive one-on-one battles

The Moon Holy Grail War ultimately leads to one-on-one confrontations. Arena preparation matters because the cards and abilities collected beforehand shape the options available in those duels. The structure makes progression and combat closely connected: exploration gives you tools, while the major fights test how well you assembled and used them.

Because the game is story-driven, losing is not presented as a routine multiplayer-style reset. The premise says that a losing Master forfeits the tournament and their life. The precise save, retry, and difficulty behavior has not been announced, so players should not assume a particular checkpoint or failure system.

Servants, abilities, and relationship progression

Three Servants have been confirmed, each with distinct abilities and combat styles. Their individual commands mean that the best deck decisions depend on whom you choose. Relationship development is also a progression system: improving your bond unlocks additional cards and abilities, giving narrative interaction a direct mechanical effect.

Official announcements have not established a complete list of every Servant, all unlock conditions, or a definitive ranking. A beginner should therefore choose based on the style they find appealing once the game presents each character’s strengths, rather than relying on an unverified “best” choice.

What changes from the 2010 PSP game?

The remake preserves the Moon Holy Grail War foundation but revises several major parts of the experience:

  • Combat: the original battle approach is replaced by customizable Command Card decks with attack, guard, and skill cards.
  • Exploration: the Arena is presented as a place to overcome traps and enemies while collecting resources that improve your Servant.
  • Story: the narrative is expanded and revised rather than reproduced without changes.
  • Characters: character designs are redesigned for the remake’s presentation.
  • Audio: the game adds new Japanese voiceover and a new score; deluxe editions also include an arranged music pack.
  • Accessibility: the PlayStation listing identifies accessibility features, although the full feature list should be checked on the platform page.

These changes mean that familiarity with the PSP title may help you recognize returning ideas, but it should not be treated as a substitute for learning the new deck and Arena systems.

Do you need to play Fate/EXTRA first?

No prior purchase or completion requirement has been announced. The remake is explicitly being presented for a new audience as well as longtime fans, so a newcomer can begin with Record. You will still encounter Fate terminology, a tournament structure, and relationships between Masters and Servants that may be easier to appreciate if you already know the wider franchise, but the available information does not indicate that another game is required to follow the central setup.

Players returning from the PSP version should also approach it as a revised game, not as a scene-for-scene replay. The expanded story, redesigned presentation, and different combat system can alter how familiar events are introduced and how progression feels.

Which platform is the best fit?

Choose PlayStation if you want

  • A version listed for both PS5 and PS4.
  • Offline single-player play and Remote Play.
  • Access to the accessibility options identified on the PlayStation listing.

Choose Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 if you want

  • A physical edition from the publisher’s announced preorder program.
  • Portable play, subject to the final technical details for each model.
  • The option of the standard Switch price or the separately priced Switch 2 edition.

Choose Steam if you want

  • A PC version with the storefront’s listed single-player features.
  • The language coverage shown on the Steam listing.
  • Digital purchasing and the listed deluxe option rather than a physical console disc or cartridge.

Steam currently marks the game as not yet available. A planned listing confirms the intended platform and date, not that the PC build can already be downloaded.

Languages and audio

Steam lists interface and subtitle support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Japanese is listed for full audio. The listing does not state that every language is available for voice acting, so subtitles and interface support should not be interpreted as additional dubbed audio.

What remains unconfirmed

Several details commonly requested by prospective buyers are not established in the official pre-release information:

  • Final performance targets, resolution, frame rate, and load times on each console.
  • Completion-time estimates or the number of chapters and endings.
  • Review scores and hands-on quality assessments.
  • Specific difficulty modes and whether difficulty can be changed after starting.
  • Save-transfer behavior between PS4 and PS5 or between Switch generations.
  • Complete Servant, card, trap, and boss lists.
  • Retail stock guarantees or preorder bonuses outside the announced publisher program.

Until the developers publish those details, avoid treating rumors, retailer placeholders, or unofficial build recommendations as confirmed features.

Newcomer buying checklist

  1. Pick your platform first. Decide whether you prioritize PlayStation features, a physical Nintendo edition, or PC access through Steam.
  2. Confirm your local listing. Release timing, currency, taxes, language availability, and physical stock can vary by region.
  3. Compare standard and deluxe contents. The deluxe package adds costumes, arranged music, and digital art and soundtrack items; buy it only if those extras matter to you.
  4. Do not preorder for unannounced technical claims. Performance, save transfers, and difficulty options have not been fully detailed.
  5. Plan to learn your Servant. Cards and abilities are Servant-specific, so early exploration and relationship development are part of understanding your chosen character.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
