Fastfetch 2.70.0 changes both the Disk module’s custom-format behavior and its JSON schema. The {size-available} placeholder has been removed, {size-free} now follows the disk.useAvailable setting, and JSON output no longer contains bytes.available or bytes.used. Update custom configurations and JSON consumers before upgrading scripts or dashboards.
What changed in Fastfetch 2.70.0
The change affects three related parts of Disk reporting: custom-format placeholders, the meaning of a displayed “free” size, and JSON field names. The release material describes this as a behavior and compatibility change, not a performance change; no performance statistics were published.

The {size-available} placeholder is gone
Fastfetch 2.70.0 no longer exposes {size-available} in the Disk custom format. The supported raw byte placeholders for the corresponding totals are {bytes-used} and {bytes-total}. Any configuration that still requests {size-available} must be revised.

Before 2.70.0, {size-free} consistently represented filesystem-free space. In 2.70.0, it reports whichever metric the disk.useAvailable option selects:

Consequently, changing that option can change the value printed by the same {size-free} format string.
Two JSON fields were removed
Disk JSON output in 2.70.0 no longer includes bytes.available or bytes.used. The bytes.free and bytes.total fields remain. Consumers that need used space should calculate bytes.total - bytes.free.

How to migrate a custom configuration
- Find the removed placeholder. Search every Fastfetch configuration and script that defines a Disk custom format for the literal
{size-available}. - Choose the metric you actually need. For filesystem capacity, leave
disk.useAvailabledisabled. For space the current user can use under quotas, enabledisk.useAvailable. - Replace the format field. Use
{size-free}when you want the option-controlled size and use the raw byte fields, including{bytes-used}or{bytes-total}, when a byte count is required. Do not assume{size-free}always means filesystem-free space after this upgrade. - Check the rendered result. Run the Disk output on a system where the distinction matters, such as a volume with user quotas, and confirm that the displayed label explains whether it is filesystem-free or user-available space.
How to update JSON integrations
- Remove reads of
bytes.availableandbytes.usedfrom parsers, dashboards, scripts and monitoring rules. - Keep using
bytes.freeandbytes.total, which are unchanged by this release. - Compute used space as
bytes.total - bytes.freeat the point where your integration needs it. - Test for missing fields rather than treating a missing value as zero. A consumer written for the old schema can otherwise report an incorrect usage percentage or fail when the property is absent.
Windows users: decide which “free” value you want
On Windows 10 1809 (build 17763) and newer, Fastfetch 2.70.0 reports whole-volume capacity and free space by default. That is the appropriate default when you want the filesystem’s overall figures. It is not the same as the amount available to a particular user when quotas restrict access.
Set disk.useAvailable to true when the display or automation must reflect current-user availability, including quota effects. Because this setting controls {size-free}, two machines with identical disks can show different values if their setting or quota policy differs.

What the release means for upgrades
The migration is usually limited to configuration and schema updates: replace the removed custom token, make the intended definition of “free” explicit, and derive used bytes from the two retained JSON fields. The most important compatibility risk is silent semantic drift: a format that worked unchanged may now show user-available space instead of filesystem-free space if disk.useAvailable is enabled.
Fastfetch 2.70.0 is distributed through the fastfetch-cli/fastfetch project with downloadable platform archives and checksums. Verify the archive for your operating system and review local configuration before switching production scripts to the new release.

{size-available}and remove it. - Document whether each display needs filesystem-free or current-user-available space.
- Set
disk.useAvailabledeliberately, especially on quota-managed Windows volumes. - Replace JSON reads of
bytes.availableandbytes.used. - Calculate used bytes from
bytes.total - bytes.free. - Test custom output and JSON parsing before deploying the upgrade broadly.
Why the number changed after upgrading
If your reported free-space value changed immediately after moving to 2.70.0, the likely cause is the new option-dependent meaning of {size-free} or the Windows default for whole-volume reporting. Compare the configured disk.useAvailable value with the metric your script intended to show; the release does not indicate a storage-capacity change.
