There is no single, universally established fastest VPN in 2026. TechRadar reports PrivadoVPN at 2,334 Mbps over WireGuard; Tom’s Guide names Proton VPN fastest overall after recording a 1,548 Mbps peak; and Security.org selects PureVPN as its overall speed winner. Those results come from different test setups, so they are not a shared head-to-head ranking—and none promises the same speed on your connection.

Which VPN is fastest in 2026?

The answer depends on what was tested and what “fastest” means. The current comparisons name three different winners: PrivadoVPN for TechRadar’s WireGuard peak, Proton VPN for Tom’s Guide’s overall assessment, and PureVPN for Security.org’s averaged results. Each is a result within that publisher’s own methodology, not proof that one service is fastest for every user, device, protocol, or destination.

Publisher and result Reported finding What the result represents
TechRadar, updated August 6, 2026 PrivadoVPN: 2,334 Mbps over WireGuard A WireGuard peak in TechRadar’s testing. The article also notes weak OpenVPN performance for PrivadoVPN, so the peak should not be generalized to other protocols.
Tom’s Guide, 2026 Proton VPN: 1,548 Mbps maximum on a 10 Gbps line Its reported US-to-UK long-distance result. Tom’s Guide also reports 1,475 Mbps locally and a substantially lower result on home Wi-Fi.
Security.org, updated September 10, 2026 PureVPN: best overall speeds in its results A ranking based on ten tests averaged against the unconnected baseline; Hotspot Shield excelled in download speed, while Proton VPN did so in upload and latency.

The figures in this table are publisher-reported measurements, not guarantees or directly comparable scores. Security.org’s overall result uses an average and baseline comparison, while the other headline findings emphasize different testing and ranking approaches. The available results do not establish a universal winner.

Why do VPN speed rankings disagree?

A VPN speed test measures the combined effect of the VPN service and the conditions around it. The protocol, VPN server, distance and route, test network, local ISP, time of day, and measurement method can all affect the result. Security.org specifically identifies server distance, time of day, and local or ISP traffic as external factors.

Publishers also differ in what they count as “fastest.” One may emphasize a maximum download result; another may average several runs against an unconnected baseline or weigh upload, latency, jitter, device support, and ordinary Wi-Fi performance. A provider can lead on one measure and trail on another without either test being contradictory.

Compare protocols separately

WireGuard and proprietary protocols should not be treated as interchangeable with OpenVPN. TechRadar’s results show why: its WireGuard or proprietary figures exceed 950 Mbps for several providers, while its OpenVPN results vary substantially. Tom’s Guide tests WireGuard, OpenVPN, and available proprietary protocols, and considers which platforms support the faster option. A fast protocol is relevant only if it is available on the device you use.

Account for the test ceiling

TechRadar lists WireGuard or proprietary results above 950 Mbps for Surfshark, Mullvad, NordVPN, Proton VPN, CyberGhost, and PrivadoVPN. When multiple providers reach or exceed the test rig’s speed limit, “over 950 Mbps” is a ceiling-limited result: it does not establish an exact order among those services. Treating those entries as precise ranked speeds would overstate what the test can show.

What the published tests measure

The following methods explain why the headline numbers cannot be combined into one league table. Compare results within each publisher’s own test, and give more weight to the protocol, route, and connection type that resemble your own.

Publisher Test approach reported How to interpret it
TechRadar At least 120 speed tests across two sessions, using a US home connection and a 1 Gbps UK data center. TechRadar uses the average of the best session as peak speed and says it retests leading services every six months, using a 10 Gbps cloud computer alongside everyday connections and devices. Its protocol-specific results and test limits matter. A peak is not the same thing as a typical home result.
Tom’s Guide Repeated tests on an uncontested 10 Gbps connection from the Eastern US to the nearest server and to the UK, using WireGuard, OpenVPN, and available proprietary protocols. It also considers latency, jitter, domestic Wi-Fi, and platform availability. High-capacity line results show what the setup can deliver; its domestic Wi-Fi testing adds a different, more household-oriented perspective.
Security.org Ten test runs averaged and compared with the unconnected baseline. An average against a baseline answers a different question from a single peak-speed result.
Comparitech VIP, live table accessed October 4, 2026 Country- and protocol-specific measurements include download, upload, latency overhead, jitter, packet loss, and success rate. Its headline score normalizes throughput against same-day baseline headroom. Raw Mbps and a normalized score are different measures; use the individual metrics that match your needs.

Which speed metric matters for your use?

  • Large downloads and transfers: Focus on sustained download throughput, and check upload speed if you regularly send large files or back up data.
  • Video calls, gaming, and remote interaction: Look beyond peak download speed. Latency affects responsiveness, while jitter reflects variation in delay; both are useful when evaluating an interactive connection.
  • Everyday household browsing and streaming: Give weight to tests on ordinary broadband or Wi-Fi. A result from an uncontested high-capacity lab connection may not reflect your home network’s limits.
  • Travel or international connections: Prefer results that use a route and server distance similar to the one you expect to use. A nearby-server test cannot establish performance on a long-distance route.

In every case, compare tests using the same protocol where possible, and check the device or platform on which that protocol was measured.

How to choose a VPN using speed-test results

  1. Match the protocol. Find out whether the result used WireGuard, OpenVPN, or a provider-specific protocol, then confirm that the protocol is supported on your device.
  2. Match the route. Compare nearby-server results for local use and long-distance results if you connect across countries. Do not assume one route predicts the other.
  3. Match the connection. Look for testing on home broadband or Wi-Fi if that is how you will use the VPN; interpret 10 Gbps lab results as tests of peak capability, not expected home speed.
  4. Read more than the headline metric. Use upload speed for sending data, and latency and jitter for interactive applications. Check whether the number is a peak, an average, or normalized against a baseline.
  5. Respect measurement limits. If results are reported as “over” a stated ceiling, treat them as indistinguishable at that limit rather than ranking them by an unsupported exact margin.

Are the fastest VPN test results speeds you can expect?

No. A published result describes a particular test setup, not a guaranteed speed for an individual subscriber. Your baseline internet speed, ISP congestion, VPN server load and distance, protocol, device, and local network can all change the outcome. The gap between Tom’s Guide’s high-capacity line results and its substantially lower home Wi-Fi result is a practical reminder that lab peaks are not typical-speed promises.
