Short answer: Expanse recorded the best mobile Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) in Deepak Jangra’s September 3, 2026 benchmark, at 1.23 seconds. Broadcast recorded the best desktop LCP, at 0.33 seconds. Those are controlled baseline results from a clean development store, not a promise that either theme will be fastest after you add apps, high-resolution imagery, tracking scripts, products, and custom sections.

The benchmark matters because “fastest theme” depends on the metric and device. Expanse led mobile LCP, while Broadcast led desktop LCP; Origin matched Expanse’s perfect Lighthouse score in the combined table and used fewer requests and less page weight in the detailed mobile results. The practical choice is therefore the theme that gives your store the best starting point for its required design and merchandising features, followed by testing on your own content.

What the 204-plus-audit benchmark tested

Deepak Jangra published the benchmark on September 3, 2026 after testing 17 popular free and paid Shopify themes. He used a fresh Shopify development store containing 13 demo products and no third-party apps. The pages were the homepage and a standard product page, tested at both mobile and desktop viewports.

Because the development store was password-protected, ordinary public-page testing was not sufficient. Jangra used Lighthouse CLI with a custom Node.js script. The automation handled repeated runs, saved the outputs, and produced aggregated CSV data alongside raw HTML and JSON reports. The public repository associated with the benchmark documents that workflow and its generated files.

How the repeated runs were reduced to one result

  1. For each theme, page type, and viewport, the script ran Lighthouse three consecutive times.
  2. It discarded the highest and lowest readings.
  3. It retained the middle result as the median for that test combination.
  4. It aggregated the medians so themes could be compared across mobile and desktop.

That design reduces the influence of a single unusually fast or slow run, but it does not turn the exercise into a field study. Every result still comes from one store configuration, one product set, one network and emulation setup, and a theme without installed apps.

The headline results: mobile and desktop are different winners

Theme Mobile Lighthouse score Desktop Lighthouse score Mobile LCP Desktop LCP
Expanse 100 100 1.23 s 0.57 s
Origin 100 100 1.74 s 0.52 s
Broadcast 99 100 1.34 s 0.33 s

Expanse was the mobile LCP leader at 1.23 seconds. Broadcast was second on mobile at 1.34 seconds, followed by Symmetry at 1.50 seconds. Broadcast’s 0.33-second desktop LCP was the fastest desktop result reported. Expanse followed at 0.57 seconds, while Origin recorded 0.52 seconds.

The author reports average Lighthouse scores of 96 for mobile and 98 for desktop across the tested themes. Those averages describe this benchmark’s clean baseline; they are not an expected score for a production shop with marketing technology and customized content.

Why LCP, not the overall score, determines the answer

Lighthouse produces a performance score from several measurements. LCP is the time until the largest visible element—often a hero image, banner, or major heading—renders. It is usually the clearest answer to a reader asking which theme displays the main content first. The overall score is useful as a summary, but two themes can share a perfect score while differing materially in LCP, blocking work, requests, and transferred bytes.

In this benchmark, Expanse and Origin both scored 100 on mobile and desktop in the combined table, yet Expanse’s mobile LCP was half a second faster than Origin’s. Broadcast scored 99 on mobile but had a faster mobile LCP than Origin and the best desktop LCP. A single score therefore cannot establish a universal winner.

The detailed mobile numbers reveal the trade-offs

Metric Expanse Origin
Lighthouse performance score 100 100
Largest Contentful Paint 1.23 s 1.74 s
Cumulative Layout Shift 0.001 0
Total Blocking Time 89 ms 33 ms
Page size 0.20 MB 0.07 MB
Requests 222 163
Fully loaded time 2.26 s 1.74 s

Expanse’s faster LCP did not mean it was lighter in every respect. In the detailed mobile run, it transferred 0.20 MB and made 222 requests, compared with Origin’s 0.07 MB and 163 requests. Origin also had lower Total Blocking Time (33 milliseconds versus 89 milliseconds), zero reported layout shift, and a shorter fully loaded time. Expanse’s advantage was the first prominent content, not every loading measure.

These differences explain why you should record LCP, Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), Total Blocking Time (TBT), request count, page size, and fully loaded time instead of sorting themes by one column. LCP answers “when is the main content visible?” CLS measures unexpected movement as content arrives. TBT approximates how long the browser is blocked from responding to interaction. Request and byte counts expose how much work the browser must schedule and transfer.

The 17 themes in the test set

The benchmark included Broadcast, Dawn, Craft, Spotlight, Studio, Origin, Sense, Refresh, Expanse, Horizon, Impact, Be Yours, Impulse, Prestige, Symmetry, Palo Alto, and Motion. The article identifies several as free themes, including Origin, Dawn, Craft, Sense, Spotlight, Studio, and Refresh. Expanse is a paid theme; the available results do not establish that paid themes as a category are faster.

Free themes appear among the highest-scoring results, and the benchmark’s top-level tables do not show a consistent price-to-speed ranking. A paid theme can justify its price through built-in merchandising tools or design flexibility, but those benefits are separate from a measured performance advantage.

Does a paid Shopify theme load faster?

Not automatically. The clean-store results include high-scoring free themes, and the fastest result changes with the metric: Expanse leads mobile LCP, while Broadcast leads desktop LCP. Price may buy features, support, or a particular design system; it does not guarantee lower LCP, fewer requests, or less JavaScript after your store is configured.

Compare the feature set with what your shop actually needs. If filtering, quick buying, recommendation blocks, image galleries, or other merchandising functions are essential, a paid theme may reduce the number of custom additions you need. If those features are unnecessary, carrying them in the theme can add code and requests without improving the customer journey. The right comparison is the complete, configured store—not the empty demo.

How to automate a comparable Lighthouse run

You can reproduce the benchmark’s logic without pretending that a script makes results universally transferable. The important part is controlling the inputs and keeping every run auditable.

1. Build a clean, repeatable fixture

  • Use a Shopify development store rather than a live shop with unknown traffic or app activity.
  • Populate every theme with the same 13 demo products, collections, images, text, and section arrangement.
  • Test the same homepage and standard product page for every theme.
  • Keep third-party apps disabled for the baseline. Record the theme version and any settings that differ.

2. Use Lighthouse CLI through a Node.js orchestrator

The benchmark used Lighthouse CLI because the store required a password and could not be treated as an ordinary public URL. A Node.js script can open the authenticated development pages, select mobile or desktop configuration, invoke Lighthouse, and save each HTML and JSON report. Keep the raw files; aggregated numbers alone make it difficult to diagnose an outlier or verify a calculation.

3. Run each combination three times

For each theme, run both page types at both viewports three consecutive times. Do not mix mobile and desktop results, and do not change the page between repetitions. The benchmark retained the middle reading after dropping the high and low values. Apply that rule consistently to LCP, CLS, TBT, page size, request count, and fully loaded time.

4. Aggregate to a comparison sheet

Store one row per theme and viewport with the retained metrics. Keep mobile and desktop columns separate. Include the test date, theme version, page URL or route, and whether the run was made with a password session. A CSV makes sorting straightforward, while the raw reports preserve the evidence behind each cell.

5. Validate before drawing a ranking

Check that all themes received the same content and that no app, cookie banner, image transformation, or external script appeared for only one theme. If one run is dramatically different, inspect its raw report and rerun the complete three-test sequence rather than quietly replacing one value.

What the benchmark can—and cannot—say about SEO

Performance contributes to the page experience signals that search engines use, and faster rendering can improve usability, especially on mobile connections. However, a theme’s Lighthouse score is not a guarantee of higher rankings. Search visibility also depends on relevance, content quality, crawlability, internal linking, structured data, reputation, and competition.

The benchmark isolates theme code by excluding apps and using a small catalog. That is useful for choosing a foundation, but it does not measure the SEO outcome of a real store. Treat the result as a way to identify a potentially efficient starting point, then measure the production pages that search engines and customers actually receive.

Applying the findings to an existing store

Test before migrating

Run PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse against a representative homepage, collection, and product page in your current theme. Capture mobile LCP, CLS, TBT, requests, and transferred bytes. Then test the candidate theme with equivalent content. A migration is justified only when the measured improvement and required features outweigh redesign, URL, app, and maintenance costs.

Remove unnecessary weight first

Audit installed apps, tracking pixels, review widgets, chat tools, recommendation scripts, and custom JavaScript. Disable or remove anything that does not support a measurable business or customer need. The benchmark author’s warning is direct: “Your theme is just your foundation—protect these scores by being ruthless about which third-party apps you install next.”

Optimize the content that becomes LCP

Large hero images and promotional banners commonly become the LCP element. Use appropriately sized assets, avoid loading below-the-fold media eagerly, and check that the theme is not delaying the main image behind unnecessary scripts. Re-test after each change so you know whether the LCP element, rather than an unrelated request, improved.

Use built-in features selectively

A theme’s built-in filters, quick-buy controls, recommendation modules, and galleries can reduce the need for app code. They can also add markup and JavaScript when enabled indiscriminately. Turn on only the features your navigation and merchandising strategy uses, then measure the resulting pages.

Expanse listing details and price context

Shopify’s official Expanse listing showed a price of $420 USD, identified Archetype Themes as the developer, and displayed version 10.0.1 dated August 21, 2026. The listing positions Expanse for large-inventory stores and describes product filtering, quick buy, product recommendations, image galleries, and support for high-resolution images.

Price and version information can change, so verify the current Theme Store listing before purchasing. The listing’s feature descriptions do not independently prove a performance advantage; the 1.23-second mobile LCP and 0.57-second desktop LCP come from the separate controlled benchmark.

How to interpret a mismatch between demo and production

  • LCP rises after adding a banner: the new hero asset or its loading priority is probably the main element; inspect its dimensions and delivery.
  • TBT rises after installing an app: compare the JavaScript and long tasks before and after the installation, then remove or defer nonessential code.
  • CLS appears on an otherwise fast page: reserve space for images, promotional bars, and asynchronously inserted widgets.
  • Requests and page size grow while the score stays high: do not dismiss the increase; a perfect score can hide a heavier page that performs worse on slower devices or future content.
  • Desktop improves but mobile worsens: keep separate budgets and priorities. Mobile is often the stricter constraint for shoppers on slower networks.

Jangra summarizes the limitation in his own words: “Your mileage will vary. These scores represent the absolute baseline performance.” That qualification is central: the benchmark helps compare foundations under equal conditions, but your catalog, imagery, apps, and configuration determine the experience customers receive.

A practical decision rule

  1. Choose the page experience you want to optimize first—usually mobile LCP, not a headline score.
  2. Shortlist themes that provide the navigation, merchandising, and accessibility functions you actually need.
  3. Run identical content through each shortlist candidate and retain repeated Lighthouse medians.
  4. Review LCP together with CLS, TBT, requests, page size, and fully loaded time.
  5. Install required apps one at a time and re-test after each addition.
  6. Keep the lighter current theme if a migration does not produce a meaningful, repeatable improvement.

On the published baseline, pick Expanse when the priority is the fastest reported mobile LCP, and consider Broadcast when desktop LCP is the deciding measure. Do not treat either label as universal: Origin demonstrates that a free theme can match perfect Lighthouse scores while using fewer mobile requests and bytes, and the final ranking can change as soon as real-store content is introduced.
