FAST channels are scheduled, internet-streamed TV channels; free movies and TV apps usually let you choose a title from an on-demand catalog. They are different ways to watch, not mutually exclusive app types: some services offer live channels and on-demand shows and movies in the same app.
What is a FAST channel?
FAST stands for free ad-supported streaming television. A FAST channel sends a scheduled stream over the internet, so when you tune in, you join whatever program is playing at that time. It works more like conventional channel surfing than choosing a film from a library.

FAST is not the same as over-the-air (OTA) television. OTA broadcasts are received with an antenna; FAST channels stream over an internet connection. The distinction matters when a service advertises “free TV”: that phrase may refer to internet streaming, antenna reception, or both. Roku’s UK support page distinguishes broadcast access from on-demand material streamed over the internet: Roku: How do I find free movies and TV shows?

| Question | FAST channel | On-demand movie or TV app |
|---|---|---|
| Who chooses what plays? | The channel’s schedule | You select a title |
| When does a program start? | You join the stream already in progress | You start the selected title when you’re ready |
| Best suited to | Channel surfing, background viewing, or discovering something without picking a title first | Watching a particular film or show, or selecting a specific title or genre |
| What to check | Channel lineup, ads, region, and device support | Catalog, title availability, ads, region, and device support |
The key difference is who picks what plays now: the channel schedule or you. An app can provide either experience—or both.

Can one free streaming app offer both?
Yes. “FAST service” and “free streaming app” are not opposite categories. The Roku Channel offers live channels as well as free shows and movies, while Samsung describes Samsung TV Plus as combining a linear channel lineup with on-demand viewing. In either case, the app can act like scheduled TV in one section and a selectable library in another.
That combined format can be convenient, but it does not mean the same titles are available in both sections. Check the service’s current channel lineup or catalog for the program you want.

Are free apps really free, and do they show ads?
“Free” commonly means the service earns revenue from advertising rather than charging you to watch its core catalog; policies vary by provider. Tubi says its content is funded by advertising, that it is free to install and watch, and that it does not require credit-card information. Its help page also says there is currently no ad-free option. Those are Tubi-specific policies, not a promise that every free service has the same sign-up requirements or ad experience. Tubi Help Center: Is Tubi really free and legal?
There is no single ad-minute figure that applies to every FAST channel or free app. Check the individual service’s terms and expect its ad experience to differ from other services. Also check for paid extras: for example, Roku says Premium Subscriptions on The Roku Channel are available only in certain markets and on certain platforms. A free catalog does not make every option within an app free. Roku: How to get The Roku Channel

Do you need a streaming device?
Not necessarily. Many free streaming apps work on supported smart TVs, phones, game consoles, or through a web browser; compatibility depends on the service, device, and region. Roku lists The Roku Channel on Roku devices, the web, mobile, compatible Samsung TVs, and Amazon Fire TV devices, with availability varying by country and platform. Its current support page lists the service in the U.S., Canada, and U.K. across Roku devices, web, and mobile, and in Mexico on Roku devices only. What do channel-count claims tell you?
Channel counts can give a sense of a platform’s scale, but they do not tell you whether it has the shows you want or whether it is available on your devices. In an April 17, 2025 announcement, Samsung reported nearly 700 channels in the U.S. and more than 3,500 globally for Samsung TV Plus. Those are Samsung’s reported figures on that date, not a current count guaranteed for every region or a neutral comparison across services. Samsung Newsroom: Samsung TV Plus expands market lead
