The fossils turned out to belong to Australotitan cooperensis, a giant titanosaur nicknamed Cooper. Its reported 70-ton weight is an estimate, not a measurement of a complete animal.
What dinosaur did the Mackenzies find?
Cooper is Australotitan cooperensis, a titanosaur identified as a new species by researchers at Queensland Museum and Eromanga Natural History Museum. The fossils were found near Cooper Creek in Queensland’s Eromanga Basin. Smithsonian Magazine reported the discovery and identification in 2021.

How the discovery happened
The Cooper discovery was not the Mackenzie family’s first encounter with dinosaur fossils. In 2004, Sandy Mackenzie, then 14, found an earlier fossil while mustering sheep on the family property. In an ABC interview transcript from 2015, Sandy recalled seeing a rock that looked different from the others while riding his bike.
Two years later, his parents, Robyn and Stuart, found the fossils associated with Cooper while riding motorbikes. These separate discoveries helped draw attention to the dinosaur remains on the property; Sandy’s 2004 find should not be confused with the 2006 Cooper discovery.

Was Cooper really 70 tons?
Smithsonian Magazine reported researchers’ estimate of Cooper’s weight as 70 tons. The same account gave an estimated length of 25–30 metres (82–98 feet)—roughly the length of a basketball court—and an estimated height of two stories. These are estimates based on the fossil evidence, not direct measurements of a complete animal.
How researchers identified the species
The fossils were large, fragile and found in a remote location, contributing to the lengthy excavation and identification process, according to Smithsonian Magazine. Researchers made 3-D scans of Cooper’s bones and compared them with scans of close relatives. This allowed them to examine delicate, heavy fossils without damaging them and helped support the classification of Australotitan cooperensis as a distinct species.

Researchers used sediment surrounding the fossils to investigate their geological age. The cited account does not establish a specific age, so a precise date for when Cooper lived cannot be stated from that information.
Why Cooper’s discovery matters
Cooper’s story is a reminder that significant fossils can turn up far from established museums or excavation sites. Queensland Museum paleontologist Scott Hocknull, a co-author of the study, put it simply in Smithsonian Magazine: “Dinosaurs find you.” In this case, a family’s finds on a Queensland farm led to the identification of a previously unrecognized titanosaur.
