Neither Farmer Mac nor agricultural bank stocks are a universal winner. Farmer Mac is a federally chartered, stockholder-owned secondary-market finance company with agriculture and rural-infrastructure exposures; an agricultural bank stock represents one particular lender, with its own borrowers, deposits, capital and risks. The better fit depends on which business you want to own, how its risks overlap with your portfolio, and whether its current valuation is reasonable.

What are you comparing?

“Farmer Mac vs. agricultural bank stocks” is not a comparison between two interchangeable kinds of bank shares. Farmer Mac—the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation—is a single publicly traded company. Agricultural bank stocks are shares in many distinct banks that lend to farms or have meaningful agricultural loan concentrations. Their common sector label does not make them one investment with uniform performance or risk.

The central difference is where each business sits in the flow of credit. A bank generally originates loans and decides how much of that lending to retain on its own balance sheet, funding itself through deposits and other borrowing. Farmer Mac operates in the secondary market: its chartered business includes purchasing eligible loans and purchasing or guaranteeing securities backed by eligible loans. The details of its activities and risks are in its annual filing. These models can respond differently to credit conditions, funding costs and interest rates.

That distinction also matters for portfolio analysis. Buying Farmer Mac is exposure to one specialized company and its specific mix of business lines. Buying an agricultural bank is exposure to a particular lender’s local economy, underwriting, customer base and funding structure. Neither choice automatically diversifies the other, and a portfolio can hold similar risks through different issuers.

What Farmer Mac owns and does

Farmer Mac’s secondary-market role is focused on eligible agricultural and rural-related credit, rather than the full set of banking activities a commercial lender may conduct. Its FY2025 materials also show that it is not simply an agricultural-credit proxy: its business includes infrastructure finance, with exposure to power and utilities, renewable energy and broadband. The proportions and risk characteristics of these businesses should be assessed from its filings rather than inferred from the company’s name.

Farmer Mac’s federal charter and status as a government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) describe its legal and institutional framework; they do not mean its publicly traded stock is guaranteed by the U.S. government. Shareholders remain exposed to the company’s business results, credit risk, funding and liquidity, interest-rate management, and valuation. The Farm Credit Administration supervises Farmer Mac through its Office of Secondary Market Oversight. That is distinct from the role of the Federal Farm Credit Banks Funding Corporation, which serves as the Farm Credit System’s fiscal and disclosure agent and markets system debt. Farmer Mac, Farm Credit System lending institutions and agricultural commercial banks are separate entities.

Farmer Mac’s latest reported scale

In results released on February 19, 2026, for the year ended December 31, 2025, Farmer Mac reported $33.4 billion in outstanding business volume, $182.5 million in net income attributable to common stockholders and $182.9 million in core earnings. It also reported $1.7 billion in total core capital and a 13.3% Tier 1 capital ratio as of December 31, 2025. These are company-reported historical figures, not forecasts or evidence by themselves that the stock is attractive at a particular price.

What “agricultural bank stock” can mean

A bank with substantial farm lending may be a community or regional lender with a broader mix of customers, or a bank whose business is more concentrated in agricultural borrowers. The label alone does not establish its size, geographic footprint, deposit stability, loan mix, underwriting standards or ability to absorb losses. Those characteristics must be examined for the named institution in its own filings and comparable banking data.

Farm-credit performance can be affected by farm income and commodity cycles, but the effect on a particular bank depends on such things as borrower and geographic concentration, loan types, collateral, and the bank’s other businesses. Funding matters too: a lender’s deposit composition and stability, reliance on borrowing, and sensitivity to changing rates can shape results alongside loan performance. A bank with agricultural lending is therefore not a direct stand-in for the national farm economy or for every other agricultural lender.

Sector context is not a bank rating

The FDIC’s 2026 Risk Review, covering calendar year 2025, reported that agricultural loan delinquency rates at farm banks increased during 2025. It also reported that FDIC-insured banks held $213 billion in agricultural loans in the fourth quarter of 2025, equal to 1.6% of all bank loans, and classified 945 institutions as farm banks based on sizeable agricultural loan concentration. These figures describe an industry context. They do not identify the condition, credit quality or outlook of any one bank.

How to compare the exposures

Use the same questions for both investments, but apply them to the business model each actually has. Farmer Mac’s annual filing and results materials are the primary places to examine its portfolio, reported performance and risk disclosures. For a bank, use that bank’s filings for issuer-specific information, then use FDIC data to put the institution in context. Do not substitute broad industry statistics for company-level analysis.

Comparison area Farmer Mac A named agricultural bank
Business model Review secondary-market purchases, guarantees and securities, along with the company’s business segments and chartered rural-finance role. Review what the institution originates, what it retains, its other lending activities and its mix of deposits and other funding.
Credit risk Examine portfolio segments, guarantees, retained credit risk, delinquencies, provisions and borrower concentrations in the annual filing. Examine agricultural loan types, borrower and geographic concentrations, delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, collateral and provisions.
Funding and interest-rate exposure Review debt issuance, liquidity, asset-liability management and disclosed spread or interest-rate sensitivity. Review deposit composition and stability, reliance on borrowing, repricing gaps, securities exposure and net interest margin.
Capital and resilience Compare disclosed capital and risk-based ratios over time, while accounting for applicable regulatory requirements and the company’s own risk profile. Compare capital ratios, tangible book value trends, allowance coverage and loss-absorption capacity using issuer filings and comparable FDIC data.
Diversification Assess agriculture and infrastructure exposures, including power and utilities, renewables and broadband. Assess the specific bank’s local economies and business mix; they may concentrate or offset its farm exposure.
Valuation and income Compare price with normalized earnings and book value, and assess payout and growth against funding and credit risks. Treat reported dividend information as historical. Use consistent valuation and dividend measures across banks, while accounting for asset quality, deposit costs, capital and one-time items.

These are not boxes to tick based on a single quarter. Look for direction over time, ask what caused a change, and compare like with like. For example, a reported earnings increase does not establish that credit risk fell, while an industry-wide delinquency increase does not establish that a particular lender’s portfolio deteriorated by the same amount.

A practical due-diligence sequence

If you are assessing Farmer Mac

  1. Start with the latest annual filing. Read the business description and segment information to understand which activities generate exposure and how the company describes its secondary-market role.
  2. Map the credit portfolio. Review portfolio segments, borrower concentrations, guarantees, retained credit risk, delinquency measures and provisions. Note what the company holds or guarantees rather than treating all business volume as identical risk.
  3. Check funding and rate management. Examine debt issuance, liquidity, asset-liability management and the filing’s discussion of spread and interest-rate sensitivity. Consider how funding conditions could interact with the assets and guarantees.
  4. Assess capital across periods. Put the reported capital figures and ratios in historical context. A single year-end reading is not a full measure of resilience, nor does it replace review of applicable regulatory requirements.
  5. Separate business performance from stock valuation. Compare the current market price with normalized earnings and book value using a consistent method. Review dividends as one part of the return case, not as a guarantee of future income.

If you are assessing an agricultural bank

  1. Name the bank before making the comparison. Identify the specific issuer and jurisdiction. A sector-wide label cannot answer questions about that bank’s assets, deposits, management or share price.
  2. Read the bank’s own disclosures. Identify its agricultural loan types and concentrations by borrower, geography or other disclosed categories, as well as its non-farm business lines.
  3. Test asset quality. Review delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, collateral and provisions. Consider whether a change reflects a small number of borrowers or a broader pattern, where disclosures allow that distinction.
  4. Examine funding and capital. Assess deposits, borrowing reliance, rate sensitivity, securities exposure, capital ratios, tangible book value trends and allowance coverage.
  5. Use FDIC data for context, not substitution. Compare the institution with relevant industry data where the measures are comparable, but do not treat the FDIC’s farm-bank category or aggregate delinquency trend as a company assessment.
  6. Compare valuation on consistent terms. Review earnings, book value and dividends alongside the bank’s asset quality, funding costs, capital and unusual items. Do not compare a bank’s multiple with Farmer Mac’s without accounting for their different business models.

Which investment may fit which portfolio goal?

Consider researching Farmer Mac when

  • You want to evaluate a single specialized rural-credit and infrastructure finance company rather than a particular local deposit-taking lender.
  • You are prepared to analyze its secondary-market model, business segments, credit exposures, funding, liquidity and interest-rate risks.
  • You want to understand its agriculture and infrastructure mix rather than assume it is a pure agricultural-bank investment.

Consider researching an agricultural bank when

  • You want exposure to a particular local or regional lender and are willing to assess that issuer’s own deposits, borrowers, capital, management, concentration and valuation.
  • You have a reason to analyze the bank’s location and business mix rather than relying on the word “agricultural” as a thesis.
  • You can compare its filings and valuation with appropriate peers without treating all farm banks as equivalent.

If diversification is the goal, inspect the actual holdings and underlying exposures in the portfolio. Two companies with different names can still share credit, geographic, interest-rate or funding risks. Conversely, businesses connected to agriculture can have different sources of revenue and distinct risk profiles. The relevant question is what the investment adds to the portfolio—not whether its label sounds different.

Risks that can change the comparison

Credit and farm conditions

Farm income and commodity cycles can affect repayment capacity, while collateral values and borrower concentration influence how losses may affect a lender. The FDIC’s reported increase in farm-bank agricultural loan delinquency rates during 2025 is a reason to examine current issuer-level asset quality, not proof that every agricultural bank is weakening. Farmer Mac’s filing should likewise be examined for the company’s own portfolio exposures, delinquencies and credit provisions.

Funding, liquidity and rates

Both business models can be affected by interest rates, but their funding structures are not the same. For Farmer Mac, review debt, liquidity and asset-liability management disclosures. For a bank, examine its deposit mix and stability, borrowing reliance, repricing gaps and securities exposure. A comparison based only on loan yields or a headline interest margin misses the interaction between assets and funding.

Capital and company-specific execution

Capital ratios are useful only when read with the issuer’s business, risk exposures and trend. For a bank, capital and allowance coverage should be considered alongside loan quality and concentration. For Farmer Mac, use its disclosed capital and risk-based measures in the context of its own risks and supervisory framework. Neither a strong-looking ratio nor one favorable earnings report settles the investment case.

Price, dividends and evidence date

The 2025 financial results and year-end capital figures are dated company disclosures, not live market analysis. The sources cited here do not establish a current share price, yield, valuation multiple or target for Farmer Mac or any named bank. Those figures change with market prices and, for a valid comparison, require a stated date and consistent calculation. A historical dividend is not a promise of a future payout, and dividend growth alone does not demonstrate that one category is safer or better.

How to reach a decision without a false winner

Write down the exposure you want first: a specialized secondary-market finance company with agriculture and infrastructure business lines, or shares in a particular bank whose lending and funding you have evaluated. Then compare the candidates on issuer-specific credit quality, funding, capital, diversification and valuation. If the reason for choosing one is only a recent earnings figure, a dividend headline, or the broad farm-bank label, the analysis is not yet complete.

There is no universal answer to “Which investment fits your portfolio?” The title alone provides no particular bank, time horizon, risk tolerance or existing holdings, so it cannot support personalized investment advice. The useful conclusion is conditional: investigate Farmer Mac for its specialized rural-credit and infrastructure profile, or investigate a specific agricultural bank for its individual lending institution exposure. Decide only after checking how either security’s actual risks and valuation fit alongside the rest of your portfolio.
