When a wide receiver gets hurt, add the available player most likely to inherit meaningful routes and targets—not simply the teammate with the closest position label. Check the latest injury news, compare recent usage with other players available in your league, and decide whether you need a one-week starter or a longer-term roster piece. There is no universally correct pickup without knowing the injured player, league scoring, and waiver pool.
Start with the role the injury opens up
An injury creates a chance for another receiver to play more, but it does not guarantee fantasy production. First identify who is expected to absorb the missing routes and targets: a direct backup, a player already moving up the target order, or a teammate whose role expands across several positions. Then check whether that increased work appeared in actual games rather than assuming it from the depth chart.

Routes and targets are useful signals because they show whether a player is getting chances to contribute. Catches and yards add production context; target share shows a player’s slice of team opportunities. Yards per route run can help assess efficiency, but should be read alongside routes and targets. A strong efficiency figure on limited work is not the same as a stable fantasy role.

Compare candidates on the same questions
- Availability: Is the player actually unrostered in your league?
- Role: Is the player directly replacing the injured receiver, playing more routes, or earning a larger place in the target order?
- Opportunity: What do recent routes and targets show, and has the workload lasted more than one unusual game?
- Production: Consider receptions, yardage, touchdowns, target share, and yards per route run together rather than relying on one number.
- Time horizon: Is this a one-week fill-in, a multiweek replacement, or a player whose role could remain useful after the injured receiver returns?
- League fit: Account for scoring format, roster depth, lineup needs, waiver rules, and the coming matchup.
A candidate with a reliable short-term role may be the right starter even if another player has more rest-of-season upside. Conversely, do not spend a scarce roster spot on a temporary name if your priority is a longer-lasting role. Avoid firm return-date assumptions unless current reporting supports them.

Week 4, 2026 examples—not Week 5 picks
The latest NFL.com weekly waiver article identified in the available coverage was published September 28, 2026, for Week 4. It discussed Kalif Raymond, Mack Hollins, Dontayvion Wicks, Keenan Allen, and Malik Washington. These are dated examples of how to evaluate opportunity, not confirmed recommendations for Week 5 or any later week. Read NFL.com’s Week 4 waiver article.
| Player | What NFL.com reported for its Week 4 article | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Kalif Raymond | 23.1% target share, 19 catches, and 214 receiving yards; NFL.com described the share as second on the Bears and the catch and yardage totals as team-leading at that point. | A reported share and season-to-date production supported the recommendation at that time; recheck current usage before applying it to another week. |
| Mack Hollins | Six catches on nine targets for 87 yards; 2.3 yards per route run. | His reported production and efficiency supported the case, while his role and the injured receiver’s status determine whether the opportunity lasts. |
| Dontayvion Wicks | 2.3 yards per route run. | Efficiency is only one part of the case; pair it with route volume and targets. |
| Keenan Allen | Six catches on seven targets for 63 yards; NFL.com noted his targets rose while Alec Pierce was on injured reserve. | The reported workload followed a teammate’s injury, but does not by itself establish a lasting role. |
| Malik Washington | 34 routes and 10 targets in Week 3, as reported in the Week 4 article. | Those figures showed opportunity in that game; check whether similar usage continued afterward. |
These figures are NFL.com’s reported Week 4 evidence, not independently measured here. They describe the context of that article and should not be treated as current projections.

Make the choice in your own league
- Confirm the injury: Check the latest report for the player’s status and the likely duration of the absence. Do not assume a return date.
- Check the receiver rotation: Review the team’s current depth chart and recent routes and targets to see who is gaining work.
- Open your waiver pool: Filter for receivers who are genuinely available in your league, then compare their opportunity and likely time horizon.
- Apply your settings: Weigh receptions differently in full- or half-point-per-reception formats, and account for league depth, lineup needs, waiver priority or budget, and matchup.
- Recheck before submitting: Injuries, roles, projections, and availability change quickly. Use the latest information on the day waivers run.

Waiver recommendations depend on who is hurt, who receives the added work, and which players remain available. NFL.com maintains a Waiver Wire series archive with recurring weekly coverage, but a recommendation from one week is not automatically suitable the next. For a pickup decision, prioritize current status and usage over an old roster percentage or a name that was once widely recommended.
