To compare tight ends, start with a ranking or projection dated for your scoring format and the week you need, then weigh routes and targets, red-zone involvement, health, team context, and matchup. Choose a waiver streamer to solve an immediate lineup need; keep a bench option for credible rest-of-season upside, insurance, or a role that could grow.
Start with a ranking that matches your decision
A ranking is a starting point, not a lineup answer. Check when it was published, the scoring format it assumes, and whether it is for one week or the rest of the season. Do not treat preseason tiers as live weekly rankings or combine lists with different assumptions as if they were one consensus.

For context, NFL.com Senior Editor Dan Parr’s 2026 preseason tiers, published July 16 and updated August 26, placed Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, Colston Loveland, Tyler Warren, and Tucker Kraft in Tier 1. Tier 2 comprised Kyle Pitts, George Kittle, Harold Fannin Jr., Sam LaPorta, and Travis Kelce. These are one analyst’s dated preseason tiers, not a Week 4 order or a cross-site consensus. Parr’s analysis considered factors including prior fantasy points per game, target volume, late-season usage, team-offense uncertainty, and health or recovery context. Read the dated tiers and analysis at NFL.com.
Compare the opportunity behind the ranking
When two tight ends are close, look for evidence that each has a real receiving role—not just playing time. PFF’s usage and production resource organizes measures that can help with waiver decisions and rest-of-season rankings. See PFF’s Fantasy Football Usage & Production Report.

Routes and route share
Snap count tells you how often a player is on the field; it does not show how often he is sent out to run a route. Check routes run and route share alongside snaps. A tight end whose playing time is dominated by blocking may have fewer chances to score fantasy points than one consistently running routes.
Targets and target quality
Compare targets and targets per route run to see how often a player is being used as a receiver. Air yards and average depth of target (ADOT) add context about where those opportunities occur. Together, these measures help distinguish a meaningful passing-game role from snaps that produce little receiving opportunity.

Red-zone role and touchdowns
Red-zone involvement can point to scoring chances, but a recent run of touchdowns is not, by itself, proof of a stable role or a reliable forecast. Use red-zone usage alongside routes and targets rather than allowing a few scores to decide the comparison.
Team, quarterback, and competition
Consider whether the passing offense and quarterback can support useful tight-end production, and how much competition there is for targets. These factors can change the value of a player with similar individual usage to another option. Parr’s preseason analysis, for example, included team and quarterback uncertainty among its ranking considerations.

Adjust for the week you need
A weekly start decision has a shorter horizon than a rest-of-season ranking. For a streamer, compare the coming opponent and the player’s current role, while treating matchup as one input rather than the entire case. NFL.com’s Week 4 start/sit coverage considered recent routes, production, and opponent context together. Read NFL.com’s Week 4 tight-end start/sit examples.
That Week 4 article recommended Travis Kelce and Juwan Johnson as starts, highlighted Dalton Schultz and Isaiah Likely, and advised sitting Kyle Pitts based on his early-season usage. These were week-specific calls, not lasting rankings. Reassess the player’s current role, health, and opponent rather than carrying an old weekly recommendation into a later slate.

Decide whether you need a streamer or a bench option
Make the roster decision based on what the spot needs to do. A streamer is a short-term answer for a lineup problem. A bench tight end is a hold for possible future value, injury insurance, or a role increase. One player can serve either purpose, but the evidence and time horizon are different.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- For a streamer: Prioritize near-term projected points, current routes and targets, red-zone opportunity, health, and the upcoming matchup.
- For a bench hold: Weigh rest-of-season opportunity, role stability or credible room to grow, and the value of insurance against the cost of using a roster spot.
- For either choice: Use the scoring format, roster depth, and your tolerance for week-to-week volatility to break close calls.
Before acting, confirm that the player is actually available in your league. NFL.com’s Week 4 waiver column considered players rostered in fewer than 60% of ESPN leagues, so that eligibility rule does not establish availability in a deeper league or on another platform. In that column, Juwan Johnson was reported as 55% rostered in ESPN leagues, Kenyon Sadiq at 34%, and Brenton Strange at 18%. NFL.com ranked Johnson its top tight-end waiver target, followed by Sadiq and Strange among the tight ends shown in its overall priority list. Those are dated Week 4 examples, not universal or current roster rates. See NFL.com’s Week 4 waiver analysis.
