What a quarterback projection tells you
A projection estimates a player’s expected fantasy output for a particular scoring format and period. It is a model’s estimate, not a promise of points or playing time. The assumptions matter: season-long totals, weekly estimates, and rest-of-season projections answer different questions.

For example, ESPN’s 2026 NFL Projection Guide was updated September 9, 2026, and describes regular-season projections based on a 17-game assumption. Its totals are estimates under that guide’s assumptions; an injury can change how many games a player actually plays.

What a quarterback ranking tells you
A ranking puts players in order for a choice, such as whom to draft or start. Some rankings mainly reflect projected point totals. Others also account for factors beyond a player’s expected mean, such as uncertainty about volume or role, upside, replacement options, positional scarcity, and roster needs. PFF describes these as considerations in its ranking methodology, while noting that its full methodology is proprietary: PFF’s explanation of rankings and projections.

A rank is also a relative prediction. FantasyPros explains that placing a quarterback at a particular position rank implies an expectation about where that player will finish relative to other quarterbacks: FantasyPros on expert rankings.
Why your QB rankings and projections may disagree
The numbers may answer different questions. A season projection estimates total output given its inputs; a draft ranking may weigh the chance that a player keeps his role, his range of outcomes, available replacements, upside, and your roster context. One number is not automatically a correction of the other.

- Scoring and league type: Passing-touchdown values and rushing scoring affect quarterback point totals. Quarterback scarcity also matters more in superflex leagues, where managers can start more than one QB, than in a typical one-QB format.
- Role and volume: A projection can obscure uncertainty about whether a player starts, how much he plays, or whether a competitor could take the job. A ranking may reflect that uncertainty.
- Rushing contribution: Rushing yards and touchdowns add fantasy points and can shape a quarterback’s floor and ceiling. Check whether the expected rushing contribution is reflected in the estimate.
- Health and team context: Injuries, offensive scheme, matchup, and expected game script can affect a weekly outlook or the assumptions behind a season estimate.
- Update timing: A list created before a role change or injury may not reflect current circumstances. Weekly projection methods vary; for instance, The Fantasy Society says its weekly model uses recent scoring, opponent adjustments, and official injury designations, while noting it may miss late or qualitative developments such as weather or midweek role changes. That is one provider’s description, not an industry-wide standard: The Fantasy Society’s projection methodology.
How to decide which number to use
- Match the league format. Confirm your scoring rules and whether you play one-QB or superflex before comparing totals or ranks. A list built for a different format may not answer your question.
- Match the timeframe. Use weekly projections for a particular matchup, season projections for a full-season estimate, and rest-of-season rankings for decisions about the remaining schedule. Check when the source last updated its list.
- Verify role and availability. Check whether the quarterback is expected to start, whether his workload is secure, and whether health news has changed the outlook.
- Inspect the assumptions behind the output. Look for passing and rushing contributions, matchup or schedule inputs, and any stated uncertainty. A point estimate without its assumptions is difficult to judge.
- Use the ranking for the decision, not as an order. Apply your roster needs and risk tolerance. If two sources disagree, identify whether they differ on role, health, scoring, upside, or expected output before choosing.
A 2026 example: Jaxson Dart
In a 2026 preseason comparison, FantasyPros listed Jaxson Dart at ECR QB11 and projection rank QB6, with 311.5 projected fantasy points. These are figures from that FantasyPros article, not universal values or guaranteed results. The example is useful because the rank and point estimate tell different things: one is Dart’s relative place in a ranking, while the other is a source-specific point projection. Is one approach more accurate?
The sources cited here explain how projections and rankings are built and offer an example of a disagreement. They do not establish an independent statistic proving that quarterback rankings consistently outperform quarterback projections, or vice versa. Treat either as an input to your decision, not a proven winner.
