If a fan heater and an oil-filled radiator draw the same power for the same amount of time, their direct electricity cost is the same. In practice, thermostat cycling, room heat loss, the temperature you want and how long you run the heater all affect consumption. A fan heater delivers warmth quickly and directionally; an oil-filled radiator heats more gradually and stays warm after switch-off. That lingering warmth does not, by itself, prove lower electricity use.
How to compare running costs fairly
Both are electric room heaters. The U.S. Department of Energy classifies electric heaters as direct-heating equipment for heating a nearby space (DOE: Direct Heating Equipment). Compare the appliances’ actual power input and energy use, not just the labels “fan” and “oil-filled.”

Use this estimate:
Estimated cost = (rated watts ÷ 1,000) × hours operated × electricity price per kilowatt-hour
For example, enter the heater’s rated watts, the number of hours it runs, and your local electricity tariff. The result estimates cost if it draws rated power for the entire period. A thermostat may switch the heating element on and off, so actual use can be lower than that full-power estimate. Your bill also depends on the tariff and heating schedule. For background on household heating, see the DOE Home Heating Guide.

It also features handy extras for a hassle-free experience (remote control, 12-hour timer, mute, child lock, and memory function).
A meaningful real-world comparison uses the same room, target comfort level, tariff and measurement period for both heaters. Record energy actually used if possible; a plug-in electricity meter may help where it is suitable for the appliance and permitted by its instructions. The sources available do not establish a matched test showing that one type costs less than the other.
What each heater is better suited to
Fan heater: quick, directed warmth
A fan heater actively moves heated air, which can make it useful when you want warmth quickly in a particular area or for occasional spot heating. Its basic advantage is response and direction, not a guaranteed saving. Noise and airflow vary by model, so check model-specific information if those matter to you.

- 2 in 1 heater fan: This ceramic heater offers dual heating modes (1500W/750W) plus a cool air fan, making it ideal for both winter and summer. With automatic thermostat control, it cycles on and off to maintain your preset temperature without any manual adjustment. A practical and thoughtful gift for working from home, or for family, friends, and colleagues during the cold season.
- Multi-protection safety system: These heaters are made of V0 flame retardant material avoiding any fire hazard. Automatic safety shut-off system will shut the heater off when the heater overheat. The tip-over protection system will automatically shuts off with a loud beep if knocked over by accident and it will come back on automatically if it is up righted.
- Portable and Powerful: The mini heater with build in carry handle helps to reinforce the potential of rather low electrical bills by using at the place where you need when you don't want to warm the full house with other centralized heaters.
- Quiet and fast heating: The ceramic space heater is impressively quieter than most conversation levels, which is quiet enough for most people to use in a bedroom while sleeping or working. With PTC heating tech and high speed fan, it is rated to heat up to 200 square feet in seconds, which would cover most bedrooms, offices, bathrooms and smaller living rooms.
- Upgrade abs material: Upgrade abs material applied, which is more flame resident. The room heater with six feet lead cord and 2 prong connection has a long lasting life. The space heater for indoor use makes a noticeable difference and works well in small to medium rooms when positioned properly.
Oil-filled radiator: gradual heat and a warm body after switch-off
An oil-filled radiator warms more gradually, and its body can remain warm after the element is switched off. That can suit someone who prefers a slower change in room temperature and a radiator that continues releasing stored heat for a time. Retained warmth is not proof that the heater used less electricity to provide the same comfort.

Neither category is automatically the better or safer choice for a bedroom, child’s room or pet area. Heater type alone does not establish a safe room size. Check the exact model’s rating, controls, dimensions, required clearances and manual, along with current safety guidance and applicable local certification. The DOE material cited here does not compare the safety of these two heater types for bedroom use.

What changes the result in your room
- Heat loss: insulation, drafts, windows and the building envelope affect how much heat the room loses. Reducing heating load and choosing equipment for expected operating conditions matter; see the DOE guidance on HVAC design and operation.
- Set temperature and comfort: the target temperature and where you need warmth influence how long the heater runs.
- Placement and airflow: location affects where warmth is delivered. Follow the model’s placement and clearance instructions.
- Rated input and runtime: use each model’s stated power and actual operating time in the cost calculation rather than assuming the heater categories have a fixed cost difference.
- Controls and features: when comparing specific models, check thermostat and timer controls, portability, dimensions, noise, response time, energy used to maintain comparable comfort, and locally relevant safety protections and certification.
When a heat pump may be worth considering
If you heat regularly rather than occasionally warming one area, a heat pump is a different option to investigate. The U.S. Department of Energy says today’s heat pumps may reduce heating electricity use by approximately 65% compared with electric resistance heating such as furnaces and baseboard heaters (DOE Home Upgrades). That is a broad U.S. comparison—not a direct test of fan heaters versus oil-filled radiators or a forecast of your personal savings.

How to decide
- Choose a fan heater if quick, directed warmth is your priority and the model fits your room and use.
- Choose an oil-filled radiator if you prefer gradual warmth and a radiator that stays warm after switch-off; do not assume that means lower bills.
- For either type, compare the exact models’ rated input, controls, dimensions, instructions and relevant safety information, then estimate or measure use under comparable conditions.
- If you need frequent, sustained heating, compare the practical suitability of a heat pump as a separate heating option.
