Fallout 4 update 1.46, released October 15, 2026, is a focused technical patch for PlayStation players and PC creators using Creation Kit. It fixes an NPC FaceGen crash affecting Creations that add NPCs, adds a temporary safeguard against looping WAV crashes, and repairs several Creation Kit conversion, archive-discovery and file-packaging failures.
What Fallout 4 update 1.46 changes
Bethesda calls the release the Fallout 4 PlayStation and Creation Kit Update. It is not a content expansion: the notes describe crash mitigation and creator-tool fixes rather than new quests, items or gameplay systems. The PlayStation changes apply to Fallout 4 on PS4 and PS5; the Creation Kit changes apply to PC authors preparing Creations, including projects intended for PlayStation.

PlayStation crash fixes
NPC FaceGen crash when using NPC Creations
Bethesda says update 1.46 “Fixed a crash related to NPC FaceGen when using Creations that add NPCs.” FaceGen is the generated facial-data component used by NPCs, so this fix is aimed at players whose crashes occurred after installing or running a Creation that introduces characters. It does not establish that every Creation-related crash is fixed; Bethesda published no crash-rate percentage, benchmark or guarantee covering unrelated causes.
Looping WAV files no longer expected to take down the game
The patch “Introduced a temporary solution to prevent looping .wav file crashes.” The mitigation has a visible limitation: when looping audio comes from a Creation, the sound may loop once before stopping or continuing, but the title should remain running. Bethesda explicitly describes looping Creation audio as only partially supported on PlayStation, so a single audible repeat is not evidence that the patch failed.

Creation Kit fixes for PlayStation publishing
Filtered PreCombine NIF conversion
Creators converting PC assets for PlayStation previously could encounter an infinite loading screen while the tool recombined geometry and updated a Creation with new archives. Bethesda’s note says PC-to-PlayStation .nif conversions now process correctly for filtered PreCombines generated inside the Creation Kit graphical interface. This targets the conversion and recombination workflow; it is not a general promise that every large archive will process instantly.
Archive-file discovery
An intermittent bug could leave the Creation Kit file explorer empty when the tool searched for files to archive. With that issue corrected, the files visible to the archiving workflow should match the project’s discoverable assets instead of disappearing because of the intermittent failure.

Bink video support
Creation Kit now correctly adds detected Bink video files with the .bik and .bk2 extensions to Extra Files. Authors whose projects rely on these video assets should no longer need to work around the specific detection and inclusion problem described in the patch notes.
SSF archive support
The allowed file list now includes .ssf files when packing archives. That change matters to creators whose projects contain SSF assets: the file type should pass the tool’s archive-packing filter instead of being rejected solely because its extension was absent from the permitted list.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Should you update immediately?
| Your situation | Reason to install update 1.46 | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 or PS5 player using NPC-adding Creations | The reported NPC FaceGen crash is specifically fixed. | Other Creation or platform crashes may remain; no reduction percentage was published. |
| PlayStation player hearing looping Creation audio | The temporary safeguard is intended to prevent the crash. | One loop may still be heard because looping Creation audio remains only partially supported. |
| PC creator converting filtered PreCombines for PlayStation | The affected NIF conversion should no longer stall on the previous infinite-loading screen. | The fix concerns filtered PreCombines generated through the Creation Kit GUI. |
| PC creator packaging video or SSF assets | Bink files and SSF archives now have the specific detection or allow-list fixes they lacked. | These changes do not replace normal project validation and archive checks. |
What update 1.46 does not claim
- Bethesda provides no numeric crash-rate improvement, performance benchmark or percentage of players helped.
- The release does not claim that all crashes caused by Creations, NPCs or audio are eliminated.
- Looping WAV playback on PlayStation is still only partially supported, despite the crash mitigation.
- The notes describe technical corrections, not new game content.
Practical checks after installing
- On PlayStation, launch the game with the Creation set that previously triggered the NPC FaceGen or looping-audio crash and verify whether the title remains stable.
- If a looping sound repeats once, treat that as the documented limitation rather than immediately assuming the crash fix is absent.
- For Creation Kit projects, rerun the filtered-PreCombine PC-to-PlayStation conversion and confirm that the process completes instead of remaining on an infinite loading screen.
- Open the archive workflow and check that the file explorer populates; then verify that required
.bik,.bk2and.ssfassets appear in the intended package.
Bethesda’s October 15, 2026 notes define update 1.46 as a targeted stability and authoring repair. TwistedVoxel’s October 16 report describes the same two PlayStation crash changes and four Creation Kit corrections. The practical result is narrower but useful: affected PlayStation Creation users should see fewer hard crashes, while authors get a cleaner path through NIF conversion and archive packaging.

Not necessarily. Bethesda says the temporary fix prevents the crash, but a Creation’s looping WAV may still loop once and remains only partially supported on PlayStation.
