Start with Far Harbor if you want the most substantial new story region and exploration. Pick Nuka-World for a themed amusement park and raider role-play, or Automatron for a shorter, robot-focused quest and companion customization. Wasteland Workshop and Vault-Tec Workshop are worthwhile mainly for settlement builders. Contraptions Workshop is one of the six official add-ons, but the available official listing does not provide enough detail to make a responsible feature-based recommendation. If you want everything, compare the Season Pass, Game of the Year Edition, and Anniversary Edition against your platform and the DLC you already own.
Quick answer: which Fallout 4 DLC should you buy?
| Your priority | Best starting choice | What you are buying |
|---|---|---|
| A new map, factions, investigation and exploration | Far Harbor | A large island region off Maine, a detective-led case, faction conflict, settlements, creatures and equipment. |
| A distinctive setting and raider role-play | Nuka-World | A raider-controlled amusement park with several themed zones, quests and settlement conquest. |
| Robot companions and construction | Automatron | A Mechanist storyline, hostile robots and scavenged parts for building and modifying robot companions. |
| Creature capture and settlement decoration | Wasteland Workshop | Cages, live-creature capture, taming, battles and additional settlement objects. |
| Building and operating a Vault | Vault-Tec Workshop | An underground Vault you can construct, populate with dwellers and use for experiments. |
| Every official add-on | Season Pass, GOTY or Anniversary Edition | Compare the bundle’s marginal price, your existing ownership and whether you want Creation Club content. |
These are fit recommendations based on the features described in official product listings, not a measured quality ranking. There is no publisher-issued order of “best” DLC, and the available evidence does not establish comparative playtime or hours-per-dollar figures.

What the six official add-ons are
Bethesda’s catalog identifies six official Fallout 4 add-ons: Automatron, Wasteland Workshop, Far Harbor, Contraptions Workshop, Vault-Tec Workshop and Nuka-World. They divide into two broad groups. Far Harbor, Nuka-World and Automatron add quests and new gameplay situations; Wasteland Workshop and Vault-Tec Workshop primarily expand settlement construction and management. Contraptions Workshop is also in the official six, although the product information available here is not detailed enough to describe its mechanics accurately.

Far Harbor: the strongest first purchase for story and exploration
Far Harbor begins with a new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency. The investigation sends you to an island off the coast of Maine in search of a young woman and leads to a hidden synth colony. The official description frames the region around a conflict among synths, the Children of Atom and local townspeople.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The expansion is not just a quest pack. Its description specifies a large new landmass, faction quests, settlements, creatures and gear. That combination makes it the clearest choice when “worth buying” means getting somewhere substantially different to explore rather than adding more objects to an existing settlement.
- Choose it first if: you want an investigation, competing factions and a separate region.
- Expect: exploration tied to quests, new settlements, enemies and equipment.
- Do not buy it primarily for: workshop-only additions; the other settlement-focused add-ons target that use case more directly.
Far Harbor is also the safest recommendation when you have room in your budget for only one individual expansion, because its official feature list covers both narrative content and world exploration. That is an editorial fit judgment, not a claim that every player will prefer its tone or story.
Nuka-World: best for the amusement-park setting and raider play
Nuka-World places you in a raider-controlled amusement park. The named areas include Safari Adventure, Dry Rock Gulch, Kiddie Kingdom and Galactic Zone, giving the add-on a strongly themed setting rather than another generic stretch of wasteland.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

That makes Nuka-World the natural pick for players who want to role-play an aggressive faction leader or who value a visually distinct park full of themed zones and quests.
- Choose it first if: the setting, park exploration and raider activity matter more to you than detective-style investigation.
- Expect: multiple named park zones, quests and the ability to direct raider gangs against settlements.
- Consider your character concept: the raider-conquest premise may fit some role-plays better than others.
Nuka-World and Far Harbor solve different problems. Far Harbor is the recommendation for a new island region and faction mystery; Nuka-World is the recommendation for a themed destination and raider-centered play. Neither should be treated as a universally superior purchase.
Automatron: a focused robot quest and customization add-on
Automatron follows a Mechanist storyline involving hostile robots. As you progress, scavenged robot parts can be used to build and modify robot companions. Epic’s catalog states that characters should be level 15 or higher, so a new character may want to wait before starting it.

The appeal is specific rather than broad. You are buying a focused quest arc plus a system for assembling and customizing robot followers. If you rarely use companions or have no interest in changing their components, much of the add-on’s value is less relevant. If robot construction is the feature that caught your attention, Automatron is the direct match.

- Choose it first if: you want robot companions, parts and customization.
- Plan around the requirement: the published level guidance is 15 or higher.
- Expect: a Mechanist-centered story and robot encounters rather than a large independent map.
Wasteland Workshop: buy it for cages, creatures and settlement systems
Wasteland Workshop is aimed at players who spend significant time designing settlements. Its listed features include cages for capturing live creatures, taming, creature battles and additional settlement options such as lighting, letter kits and taxidermy.
This is not the first choice for someone looking for a new story region. Its value increases with the amount of time you spend building, decorating or managing settlements. The capture-and-taming features also give builders a reason to create spaces for creatures and displays rather than only beds, defenses and production objects.
- Choose it first if: settlement construction and creature-related systems are your main interests.
- Expect: cages, live-creature capture, taming, battles and decorative options.
- Skip it as a first purchase if: you primarily want quests, a new map or faction narrative.
Vault-Tec Workshop: for an underground Vault project
Vault-Tec Workshop lets you build and operate an underground Vault, attract dwellers and experiment on them. The premise is more specialized than the general settlement additions in Wasteland Workshop: the attraction is creating a Vault-themed facility and managing the people who live there.
It is a good fit when your idea of Fallout 4’s endgame is a long construction project with a strong Vault identity. It is a weaker fit when you want an independent adventure area, because the official description centers on building, operating and populating the Vault.

Contraptions Workshop: confirmed add-on, limited feature evidence
Contraptions Workshop is confirmed as one of the six official Fallout 4 add-ons in Bethesda’s catalog and an Xbox bundle listing. However, the available official product passage does not provide a sufficiently detailed feature list to describe its mechanics without guessing.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

That limitation matters when deciding whether it is worth buying separately. Do not purchase it on the assumption that an unsourced feature list is complete or current. If you are buying a bundle that includes all six, its inclusion is straightforward; if you are considering an individual purchase, open the current platform-store description and verify the features that matter to you before paying.
Story DLC versus workshop DLC
The quickest way to narrow the choice is to decide whether you want content to play through or systems to build with. The story-oriented group gives you places, conflicts and quests. The workshop-oriented group assumes that settlement construction itself is the activity you want to expand.
| If you ask… | Look at… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “Where can I explore next?” | Far Harbor or Nuka-World | Both add distinct regions with quests; Far Harbor is an island investigation, while Nuka-World is a themed park and raider setting. |
| “What can I do with my companions?” | Automatron | Its listed purpose is building and modifying robot companions through scavenged parts. |
| “How can I make settlements more active?” | Wasteland Workshop | It adds cages, taming, creature battles and decorative settlement options. |
| “Can I build my own Vault?” | Vault-Tec Workshop | Its central feature is constructing and operating an underground Vault. |
| “Can I get all six at once?” | Season Pass, GOTY or Anniversary Edition | The right value depends on your platform, regional price, existing ownership and whether Creation Club items matter to you. |
Prices and bundle value
Store prices change by region, platform and promotion. The figures below are snapshots that should not be treated as universal current prices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Product or DLC | Published snapshot | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fallout 4 Season Pass | $34.99 | Xbox US listing; requires the base game and includes all six add-ons. |
| Fallout 4 Season Pass | €34.99 | Epic euro-region catalog listing. |
| Far Harbor | €14.99 | Epic euro-region individual-DLC listing. |
| Nuka-World | €9.99 | Epic euro-region individual-DLC listing. |
| Automatron | €9.99 | Epic euro-region individual-DLC listing. |
| Wasteland Workshop | €4.99 | Epic euro-region individual-DLC listing. |
| Contraptions Workshop | €4.99 | Epic euro-region individual-DLC listing. |
| Vault-Tec Workshop | €4.99 | Epic euro-region individual-DLC listing. |
At those particular euro-region prices, Far Harbor, Nuka-World and Automatron total €34.97 before any discount, essentially the same as the listed €34.99 Season Pass while leaving out the three workshop add-ons. That arithmetic is useful for understanding the snapshot, but it is not a promise about the price in your store or on another date.
Use marginal cost rather than the headline bundle price. If you already own the base game, compare the cost of the Season Pass or an upgrade bundle with the price of only the missing DLC. If you own Far Harbor and Nuka-World, for example, a bundle that still charges for those licenses may be worse value than buying Automatron or a workshop add-on separately. Storefronts differ in how they price upgrades, so check the final checkout total on your platform.
Season Pass, Game of the Year Edition or Anniversary Edition?
Season Pass
The Xbox US listing describes the Season Pass as requiring the base game and including all six official add-ons. It is the straightforward all-DLC route for someone who already owns the base game and wants the expansions, provided the price beats buying only the missing items.

Game of the Year Edition
Xbox describes the Game of the Year Edition as Fallout 4 plus all six official add-ons. This is the relevant comparison when you do not own the base game, or when the complete-game package is cheaper than assembling the game and DLC separately.
Recommended Free Tools
Anniversary Edition
Bethesda describes the Anniversary Edition as including the base game, all six official expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items in one bundle. The edition became available on November 10, 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Nintendo Switch 2 availability was planned for 2026; confirm the current listing before purchasing because platform availability can change.
The Anniversary Edition’s extra Creation Club content is the material distinction from a package that only promises the base game and six add-ons. If you want only the official expansions, compare its price with the Game of the Year Edition or Season Pass route. If the additional Creation Club items are important to you, include that value in your comparison rather than treating the editions as identical.
How to choose when you already own some content
You own only the base game
- Write down your platform and store region.
- Open the Season Pass, Game of the Year Edition and Anniversary Edition listings available for that platform.
- Check whether each listing includes the base game, all six add-ons and, for Anniversary Edition, the Creation Club items.
- Compare the complete checkout price, including any platform-specific upgrade pricing.
- Choose the least expensive package that contains the content you actually want, unless the additional Creation Club items justify paying more.
You own the base game and one or more DLCs
- Use your platform’s library or add-on management page to identify exactly which of the six licenses you own.
- Price the missing add-ons individually and price the Season Pass or an upgrade bundle.
- Subtract the value of content you would be buying twice; a bundle is not automatically a bargain when it cannot be discounted for owned items.
- For a single missing story expansion, buy the individual DLC if its current price is lower than the bundle’s marginal cost.
You are deciding between individual DLCs
Buy Far Harbor for a new region and faction conflict, Nuka-World for the park and raider premise, or Automatron for robot customization. Choose Wasteland Workshop or Vault-Tec Workshop only when their settlement-specific features match how you play. Treat Contraptions Workshop as a verify-before-buy item because the available official description is not detailed enough to establish its mechanics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical purchase checklist
- Confirm the platform: DLC licenses are tied to the store and edition you are using; do not assume a purchase transfers between platforms.
- Confirm the base game requirement: the Season Pass listing specifically requires Fallout 4.
- Check ownership before checkout: look for each add-on in your library or installed-content list.
- Read the current regional price: the published $34.99 and €34.99 figures are store-specific snapshots, not guaranteed prices.
- Check the edition contents: Game of the Year includes the base game and six add-ons; Anniversary Edition also lists more than 150 Creation Club items.
- Verify availability: especially on newer hardware and Nintendo Switch 2, where the Anniversary Edition’s planned 2026 availability should be confirmed in the live store.
- Check Automatron’s level guidance: the catalog recommends level 15 or higher.
- Verify Contraptions features: consult the current official product page before buying it individually.
Common buying mistakes
Buying a complete bundle when you need only one expansion
A complete bundle can look cheaper than six separate list prices while still costing more than the one DLC you actually want. Calculate the marginal price after accounting for owned content.
Assuming every DLC adds a new map
Far Harbor and Nuka-World are the clearest new-region choices. Automatron is centered on a quest and robot system, while Wasteland Workshop and Vault-Tec Workshop focus on construction and management. Choosing by the wrong category is the fastest way to feel that a purchase was poor value.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Using a regional price as a universal recommendation
The listed currencies and storefronts are explicitly regional. Sales, taxes, platform pricing and currency conversion can change the result. Use the figures as comparison examples, then check your own store.
Treating “all six” as the same as Anniversary Edition
Game of the Year and Season Pass descriptions cover the base game and six add-ons in the cited listings. Anniversary Edition additionally includes more than 150 Creation Club items. Check the product description instead of assuming the packages contain identical extras.
Expecting an objective quality ranking
Official sources describe what each add-on contains, but they do not establish a definitive best-to-worst order, comparative review scores or a reliable hours-per-dollar statistic. The useful decision is the one that matches your preferred activity.
Recommended buying paths
The explorer
Start with Far Harbor. Its island landmass, detective case, faction conflict, settlements, creatures and gear address the desire for a substantial new place to investigate. Add Nuka-World later if a themed park and raider-led conquest appeal to you.
The role-player who wants a raider campaign
Start with Nuka-World. Its park zones and raider-gang settlement conquest are the defining features. Consider Far Harbor only if you also want a separate faction mystery and broader exploration.
The companion tinkerer
Start with Automatron, following the published level-15-or-higher guidance. Its value is concentrated in the Mechanist storyline and robot-part customization, so it is a more targeted purchase than a large world expansion.
The settlement architect
Choose between the two workshop add-ons by project. Wasteland Workshop is the match for cages, taming, creature battles and decorative options; Vault-Tec Workshop is the match for constructing and operating an underground Vault with dwellers and experiments.
The new player who wants everything
Compare Game of the Year, Season Pass plus the base game, and Anniversary Edition on your platform. Select Anniversary Edition when its additional Creation Club items and current price make sense; otherwise, a complete package containing the base game and six add-ons may be sufficient.
Bottom line
For most players buying one expansion, Far Harbor is the best starting fit because it combines a new region, story, factions, settlements, creatures and gear. Nuka-World is the alternative for amusement-park exploration and raider role-play, while Automatron is the specialist choice for robot companions. Buy Wasteland Workshop or Vault-Tec Workshop for their specific settlement themes, and verify Contraptions Workshop’s current description before purchasing it alone. For a complete collection, compare the Season Pass, Game of the Year Edition and Anniversary Edition using your platform, region and existing licenses rather than assuming one bundle is always the best value.
