SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy launched the classified NROL-97 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) at 11:54 p.m. EDT on October 1, 2026 (03:54 UTC on October 2), from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A. The U.S. Space Force described the assignment as a mission from the Eastern Range to a “Higher Energy” orbit, but the exact orbit and payload details have not been publicly identified.
What happened on the NROL-97 launch?
Falcon Heavy lifted off on October 2, 2026, at 03:54 UTC—11:54 p.m. EDT on October 1—from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. SpaceX’s mission page identified Launch Complex 39A as the launch site. The mission was for the NRO and was assigned to SpaceX as an NRO partner mission by the U.S. Space Force. It was Falcon Heavy’s first mission for the NRO. Space.com’s October 2 launch report confirmed the successful launch.

What does “higher-energy orbit” mean here?
The Space Force’s FY25 NSSL Phase 3 Lane 2 mission assignments described NROL-97 as an Eastern Range mission to a “Higher Energy” orbit. That phrase signals a demanding orbital-energy requirement, but it is not a specific orbit designation. SpaceX’s public launch information did not name the target, and Space.com reported that the orbit was not disclosed.

The public sources reviewed do not establish the satellite’s payload mass, orbital altitude, or inclination, nor do they identify its design or function.

What can Falcon Heavy carry out in general?
SpaceX’s Falcon Payload User’s Guide, dated May 9, 2025, describes Falcon Heavy as a two-stage, heavy-lift vehicle powered by liquid oxygen (LOX) and RP-1. Its first stage brings together three Falcon 9 first stages: two side boosters and a center core. SpaceX lists 27 first-stage engines and a sea-level liftoff thrust of 22,819 kN (5,130,000 lbf). Those are vehicle specifications, not measurements of NROL-97’s payload or its flight destination.
The same guide lists general Falcon Heavy services from the Eastern Range for several destination categories. These are vehicle capabilities, not confirmed NROL-97 destinations:

Which boosters landed?
Space.com reported that Falcon Heavy’s two side boosters landed at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station a little under eight minutes after liftoff. The report said those boosters were on their second and fourth flights, respectively. The center core was not recovered. Space.com also reported that the launch webcast ended at the NRO’s request shortly after the side boosters landed.
What remains classified?
The public information cited here does not reveal NROL-97’s payload design, mission function, or precise orbit. Without an official disclosure, describing it as a particular kind of satellite or assigning it a specific orbital destination would be speculation.
