Reports published October 16–17, 2026 identified a counterfeit listing that copied WhatsApp’s name, icon, description and screenshots, reached more than 500,000 downloads, and appeared in a sponsored result. The copy was published by Agment Assets sallu, not WhatsApp LLC. The reporting establishes impersonation, but does not prove that every installation contained malware or stole data.
What happened to the Google Play listing?
Digit and Android Authority reported that a listing titled “WhatsApp Messenger” had been available since September 2026 and exceeded 500,000 downloads. It copied the official app’s branding and appeared as a sponsored search result, making it easier to mistake for the genuine app.
The reported publisher was Agment Assets sallu. The legitimate Android app is published by WhatsApp LLC. Android Authority contrasted the counterfeit listing’s 500,000-plus downloads with the official listing’s 10B+ download badge, but download totals are only a secondary clue: a fake app can accumulate substantial numbers before detection.
Neither report supplied a verified package name, a complete permissions list, forensic malware analysis or an authoritative Google takedown notice. Treat the app as counterfeit and untrusted, not as proven malware in every case.

How to tell whether your installed app is genuine
- Open the installed app’s Play Store page. In Google Play, select your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, open Manage, and select WhatsApp.
- Check the publisher line. It should say WhatsApp LLC. A different publisher, a spelling variation or an unfamiliar developer name is a red flag. The reported copy used Agment Assets sallu.
- Check where you obtained it. A listing reached through an advertisement deserves extra scrutiny, even when it appears inside Google Play.
- Review Play Protect status. In Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Play Protect. A warning that the app is fake or potentially harmful should be treated as an instruction to remove it.
- Inspect permissions and updates. Unexpected access requests, updates that do not come from WhatsApp LLC, or an unsupported build are warning signs. Do not use download counts or feature comparisons as proof of authenticity.

What to do if you installed the copy
- Stop using the unofficial app. Do not enter passwords, payment details or verification codes, and do not send additional sensitive messages through it.
- Follow any Play Protect warning. WhatsApp’s help center says users who receive Google’s Play Protect warning are likely using an unofficial version. Google may disable or uninstall such applications because of security concerns.
- Preserve only what you genuinely need. Use trusted, documented WhatsApp migration or backup tools. Do not export sensitive chats to an unknown app or share them with a third-party service simply to make a copy.
- Uninstall the unofficial app. On Android, open Settings, Apps, select the suspect WhatsApp entry and choose Uninstall. If Google has already disabled it, remove it from the same app-management screen.
- Reinstall an official build. Download WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business from WhatsApp’s official website or the verified Play Store listing whose publisher is WhatsApp LLC.
- Re-register your number. Complete WhatsApp’s normal phone-number verification after installation. If you reused a password in the suspect app, change that password anywhere else it was used.
Will your chats come back?
Not necessarily. WhatsApp warns that chat-history transfer cannot be guaranteed when moving from an unofficial app because those builds are unsupported. A backup created by the counterfeit app may not be trustworthy or compatible. Keep any existing trusted backup, follow WhatsApp’s documented migration process, and avoid treating an unofficial export as proof that your history is safe.
Why Play Protect helps—but is not enough
Google defines malware broadly as code that can put a user, data or device at risk, including trojans, phishing and spyware. Play Protect and Android’s app-verification systems can warn about or block potentially harmful applications; Google’s warning documentation includes “This app is fake” for phishing detections.

Those controls reduce exposure but cannot replace checking the publisher. This incident reportedly involved a sponsored impersonator that looked like the real listing, so verify the developer identity before installing or updating. Google said it scanned more than 350 billion Android apps daily during 2025, identified more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play, prevented more than 1.75 million policy-violating apps from publication and banned more than 80,000 bad developer accounts; these figures were reported on February 19, 2026. Large-scale screening does not mean every counterfeit listing is stopped immediately.
