The listing was a deliberate decoy, not a real property or a reported case of fraud. But it showed how easily a plausible-looking listing can draw interest.
How fake listings have affected New Zealand travellers
Some scams do not invent a property from scratch. They copy photographs and descriptions from a real home, then use the imitation listing to direct would-be guests towards a private payment.
Mt Maunganui: a private-payment request
The NZ Herald reported that a fake Booking.com listing copied details and images from a genuine Mt Maunganui property and directed a would-be guest to pay privately. The family lost nearly NZ$10,000, according to the report. This is a reported individual case, not a measure of how often fake listings appear.
Orewa: an owner says the listing stayed live
RNZ reported that homeowner Kellie Walker found her six-bedroom Orewa house listed on Booking.com without her having listed it. Walker said the page remained live for weeks after she reported it. That account describes one owner’s experience; it does not establish a platform-wide rate of unauthorized listings or a general response time.

Warning signs in a booking conversation
Pause if a booking that began on a platform suddenly changes course. Netsafe guidance reported by 1News identifies requests to communicate off-platform or to use a separate payment link as warning signs, especially when the explanation is that “the payment didn’t work.”

What to do before sending money
- Stop when the process changes unexpectedly. Do not follow a replacement link simply because someone says the original payment failed.
- Verify independently. If you need to confirm a property or operator, use contact details obtained independently rather than relying only on a link or number in the unexpected message. Verification is a precaution, not a guarantee.
- Keep booking communication and payment on the platform. A request to move either elsewhere is a reason to pause and check through the platform’s own channels.
If you suspect fraud or have paid
Contact your bank or card provider promptly if you have sent money and suspect fraud. A Netsafe officer interviewed by 1News said recovery tends to be harder after a wire transfer or cryptocurrency payment than after a bank or card payment. That is a relative difference in difficulty, not a promise that a bank or card payment will be refunded.

What the cases say—and do not say—about platform responsibility
The reports raise a practical accountability question: what can a booking platform detect and remove that an individual traveller cannot? Netsafe chief online safety officer Sean Lyons told 1News, “It’s the industry that has the ability to see the patterns.” His point is that a platform can compare listings across its systems, while a traveller usually sees only the one booking in front of them. It is an argument about where preventive capacity lies, not a formal finding about legal liability.
Owners’ accounts and a platform’s description of its procedures are different kinds of evidence. In the Mt Maunganui and Orewa coverage, owners described harm or delays; Booking.com described verification and investigation practices, including precautionary closure. The cases justify taking suspicious listing and payment changes seriously, but they do not establish a platform-wide failure rate or show that one booking service is safer than another. The available reporting does not support ranking platforms by safety.
