If someone creates a Facebook Marketplace listing or profile that uses your name, report the impersonating account or content to Facebook, preserve evidence first, and separately check whether your own Facebook account was accessed. A fake listing alone does not prove that anyone logged in to your account.
First, preserve the listing and messages
Before the seller deletes the post or changes the profile, save the listing URL, profile name, screenshots, the date and time, seller contact details, and any messages. Capture enough of the page to show the name, photos, description, price and any request for payment or personal information. Keep the original files in a safe folder and do not edit the screenshots.

Do not send money, identity documents, passwords, verification codes or additional personal information to the seller. If you know people who may be contacted, warn them that the listing is not yours, but avoid publicly posting private contact details from the account.

Use the report option on the content you found
Open the specific Marketplace listing, seller profile or conversation and choose its report option. Select the reason that most closely describes impersonation, fraud or a scam. Facebook says accounts pretending to be another person are not allowed on Messenger; its Help Center and Marketplace safety tools provide the relevant reporting routes. The exact labels and menu locations can vary by device and may change as Facebook updates its interface.

Report every relevant location separately when possible: the listing, the seller profile and messages that solicit payment or personal data. Include a concise explanation that the account is using your name without permission and attach the evidence the form requests. A report asks Facebook to review the content; it is not a guarantee that the listing will be removed.
Check the result in Support Inbox
Facebook says it reviews reported content against its Community Standards. You can track a report in Support Inbox. Some decisions that leave content online offer another review, but that option is not available for every decision. Do not assume that a lack of immediate action means the report was ignored, and do not promise buyers a particular removal deadline.

Check whether your own Facebook account was accessed
Someone can copy your name onto a separate account without ever signing in to your account. Treat the situation as a possible compromise only if you see warning signs such as unfamiliar posts or messages on your account, changed email or phone details, an unexpected password reset, unknown sessions, or messages sent by you that you did not write.
If you suspect unauthorized access, use Facebook’s recovery flow at facebook.com/hacked from a device you have used to log in before. Follow the prompts to secure the account, change the password and review account access. Also change any other service that reused the old password, and turn on two-factor authentication where available. These account-recovery steps are different from reporting an impersonating listing.

Choose the escalation route that matches the harm

A fake listing by itself does not establish credit-file identity theft. In the United States, use IdentityTheft.gov when someone used your personal information for broader identity misuse; its report can help demonstrate identity theft to businesses and make corrections easier. Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov when a buyer lost money, was targeted by a scam, or a fraudulent transaction occurred. These FTC services are U.S.-focused; readers elsewhere should use their national identity-theft and consumer-protection agencies.
If a buyer has already been contacted or paid
Ask the buyer to preserve the listing, messages, payment records and shipping details, then report the transaction through Facebook and the payment provider’s fraud process. A buyer should contact their bank or card issuer promptly if money or account credentials were sent. You can provide the buyer with the evidence showing that the account was not authorized to represent you, but do not handle a refund by sending money yourself unless your bank or the payment service instructs you to do so.

What not to assume
- A copied name does not prove your Facebook login was stolen.
- A Facebook report does not guarantee removal, an investigation or a specific response time.
- An FTC Identity Theft Report is for broader identity misuse, not automatically for every impersonating Marketplace post.
- Deleting your own post or changing your profile name will not remove someone else’s listing; report the source content instead.
Keep a simple incident record
Write down when you found the listing, every URL and account name, the reports you submitted, confirmation numbers, messages received and any financial impact. Update the record if the account reappears under a new name. This gives Facebook, a payment provider or a government reporting service a consistent timeline without requiring you to rely on memory.
