Fake Brand Discounts on Social Media: How to Spot a Scam Before You Buy

A familiar logo, a strikingly low price and a “limited time” message can make a social-media ad feel like a deal you need to grab now. But appearing in a feed does not prove the seller is legitimate or that the platform verified the advertiser. Before you click, pay or share personal information, check who is actually selling the item.

How fake brand-discount ads work

Scammers sometimes use a real company’s name, logo or product images in paid social-media ads. The ad may send shoppers to an unfamiliar site designed to collect payment or personal information. A buyer might receive nothing or get counterfeit goods instead of the advertised product. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this pattern in its consumer advice on social-media brand-name deals.

A feed placement is not an endorsement. The FTC says social-media platforms do not always thoroughly vet ads or advertisers, and anyone can pay to place an ad. A convincing logo, polished creative or familiar platform therefore does not establish who is behind the offer. The FTC explains this in its August 2026 alert about social-media ads.

Why urgency deserves a pause

Countdowns, “limited time” claims and unusually low prices can make a shopper feel that waiting means losing out. The FTC says impersonation scammers exploit excitement and worry, rush people and make warning signs harder to notice. That is a reason to slow down, not evidence that fear of missing out has a measured causal effect on purchases from these ads; the FTC sources do not quantify such an effect.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon eGift Card - Amazon Logo
  • Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
  • Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
  • Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.

As the FTC put it in its 2024 Data Spotlight, “Impersonation scams: not what they used to be”: “Scammers want to rush you, so, again: stop and check it out.”

Check the seller before you buy

  1. Identify who is taking your money. Find the seller’s name on the site the ad leads to. Do not assume the brand featured in the ad is the seller.
  2. Look for independent complaints. Search the seller’s name with terms such as “scam,” “complaint” or “review.” Treat a lack of results as inconclusive, not proof of trustworthiness.
  3. Compare the price. Check the offer against prices from other sellers. The FTC advises that “If the ad offers prices that are much, much lower, it’s probably a scam.” An unusually low price is a warning sign, not proof on its own.
  4. Verify through the brand, independently. Type the brand’s known official web address yourself or use a contact channel you already trust. Check whether the deal appears there; do not rely on contact details or links in the suspicious ad.
  5. Stop if you cannot verify the offer. Do not enter payment details or personal information on a site you cannot connect to the real seller or confirm through the brand’s official channel.

How widespread are social-media shopping scams?

FTC figures show why caution matters, but they describe reports to the agency—not every scam or every shopper. In data published in 2026 about 2025 reports, the FTC recorded $2.1 billion in reported losses on fraud reports that indicated social media as the contact method. More than 40% of people who said they lost money to a social-media scam reported that it began when they ordered something they saw in an ad. That percentage is about people reporting losses to social-media scams, not all ad viewers or shoppers. The FTC also reported more than $95 million in losses in 2025 to scams that began with people ordering something after seeing a social-media ad; that shopping-ad category is broader than fake brand-discount impersonation scams.
