If you’re buying new, the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is the more straightforward choice: it has newer listed internals, 12GB of RAM and current manufacturer availability. The Fairphone 5 is worth considering if you find a substantial local discount, prefer its larger display, or already own one. Fairphone stopped selling the 5 and discontinued its production on 12 January 2026, though retailer stock may remain.
“Fairphone 6+” refers here to the company’s official model name, The Fairphone (Gen. 6+), an upgraded configuration of the 2025 Fairphone (Gen. 6) launched on 18 August 2026. This comparison is with the older Fairphone 5, not a claim that every difference is an upgrade over the Gen. 6.

What changed between the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) and Fairphone 5?
The clearest differences are the processor, memory, screen size and camera configuration. The Gen. 6+ has a newer named platform and more RAM; the Fairphone 5 has a slightly larger display. Both are designed around repairability, and both have an IP55 rating. The specifications below come from Fairphone and its support materials, not independent comparative testing.
| Decision point | Fairphone (Gen. 6+) | Fairphone 5 | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 | Qualcomm QCM6490 long-life chipset | The Gen. 6+ uses the newer named platform. These specifications alone do not establish which performs better in benchmarks or everyday use. |
| Memory and storage | 12GB RAM; 256GB listed storage, expandable by microSD up to 2TB | The Fairphone FAQ cited here does not establish every retail configuration | The Gen. 6+ has a stated memory advantage. Check the exact Fairphone 5 SKU before comparing storage or RAM. |
| Display | 6.31-inch LTPO AMOLED with adaptive 10–120Hz refresh rate | 6.46-inch OLED | The Fairphone 5 screen is larger by diagonal; the Gen. 6+ specifies an adaptive high-refresh-rate panel. |
| Cameras | 50MP main and 13MP ultrawide rear cameras; 32MP autofocus front camera | Three 50MP camera modules, including ultrawide and sensor modules, as described by Fairphone | The hardware configurations differ, but megapixel counts do not establish which takes better photos. |
| Battery | 4,415mAh removable battery; Fairphone says it retains more than 80% of nominal capacity after more than 1,000 cycles | The cited support FAQ does not provide comparable capacity data | Capacity and cycle claims are not a direct measure of comparative runtime. Both models are repairability-oriented. |
| Repair | 12 user-replaceable parts; removable battery; one Torx T5 tool opens the phone, according to Fairphone | Repair services and parts support continue | Both suit buyers who value repair options. Check the model-specific part and repair route for the issue you have. |
| Water and dust resistance | IP55 | IP55 | The listed rating does not give either model an advantage on this comparison. |
| Software support | Launched with Android 16; Fairphone lists six Android upgrades plus one additional year of security updates | Launched with Android 13; Fairphone promises five Android version upgrades and at least eight years of security updates, with a goal of ten years | These are Fairphone’s stated support commitments. Android-version upgrades and security updates are different measures. |
| Availability | Listed on Fairphone’s current product page | Sales and production discontinued on 12 January 2026; reseller stock may remain | Check local stock, seller, warranty and condition before choosing the older model. |
Fairphone’s Gen. 6+ launch story claims app loading and switching are “faster by up to 24%” and system RAM reservation time is “down by up to 20%” compared with the Gen. 6. Those are manufacturer claims about the Gen. 6 comparison, not independent measurements and not a direct Fairphone 5 test.

Which model should you buy?
Choose the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) if you’re buying new
- You want the newer listed processor and 12GB of RAM.
- You want a phone currently listed by Fairphone rather than relying on remaining stock of a discontinued model.
- You want the stated 256GB storage and microSD expansion option, or the Gen. 6+’s adaptive 10–120Hz display.
Fairphone’s European comparison page lists the Gen. 6+ at €649 and the Gen. 6 at €599. These are page-specific regional prices, not a universal price, and the comparison does not establish a current Fairphone 5 offer.
Consider the Fairphone 5 if the deal and condition make sense
- You find it at a meaningful discount from a local retailer or seller.
- You specifically prefer its 6.46-inch display.
- You already own one and are deciding whether to keep using or repair it: Fairphone says repair services, spare parts and software releases continue, with parts and updates planned until at least 2031.
Fairphone says it has no live inventory overview for remaining European reseller stock. Verify the exact model, condition, warranty terms and seller’s return policy before paying; do not treat an old launch price as a current street price.

How long will software and repair support last?
Fairphone (Gen. 6+)
Fairphone says the Gen. 6+ launched with Android 16 and will receive six Android upgrades plus an additional year of security updates. Its launch story describes support through 2033. The same launch story says the warranty is up to five years; the applicable warranty depends on current market-specific terms, so check those terms rather than assuming the maximum applies automatically.
Fairphone 5

It states that spare parts and software updates are planned until at least 2031. Fairphone describes the Fairphone 5’s software commitment as five Android version upgrades and at least eight years of security updates, with a goal of ten years. What the specifications don’t tell you
The available manufacturer material does not establish a tested winner for speed, camera quality or battery life between these two models. The Gen. 6+’s newer chipset and higher memory are meaningful spec differences, but they do not substitute for controlled comparisons. Likewise, a larger screen or higher camera-module megapixel count does not by itself determine which phone is better for your use.
Accessories are also model-specific: do not assume a Fairphone 5 case, screen protector, battery or replacement module fits the Gen. 6+. Confirm compatibility for the exact generation before ordering.

Check before buying
- Compare the actual local price. Use the Fairphone listing for the Gen. 6+ and a current, verified seller listing for any Fairphone 5; the official comparison page does not provide an FP5 street price.
- Confirm the exact Fairphone 5 configuration. Check the seller’s RAM, storage, condition and included parts instead of assuming every listing has the same SKU.
- Read the warranty and return terms. This matters especially for discontinued stock, used devices and cross-border purchases.
- Match accessories to the generation. Verify each case, protector or repair part against the selected phone’s model.
