Fairphone still calls it Fairbuds XL; iFixit describes the 2025 release as Gen. 2. Its repairability is compelling in principle, but the buying decision also depends on parts access, warranty terms and whether you like its energetic, bass-forward sound.
What changed with the Fairbuds XL Gen. 2?
The 2025 refresh keeps the Fairbuds XL name on Fairphone’s product page, while iFixit labels the release the second generation. The distinction matters when searching for warranty coverage or replacement parts: Fairphone says its extended warranty program was designed for the 2025 product, while the earlier version remains repairable but does not receive that specific extended coverage. Check the exact model and current regional terms before buying a used pair or ordering a part.

How do the Fairbuds XL sound and feel?
TechRadar’s reviewer describes an enjoyable, comfortable fit and energetic, bass-forward sound. The same review says the headphones deliver less detail and a less expansive soundstage than some rivals. Those are the reviewer’s listening impressions, not laboratory measurements or a direct, controlled comparison against every competing model.

Fairphone identifies nine replaceable modules:

Fairphone provides instructions for replacing parts in its spare-parts replacement guide, and recommends contacting customer support if you are not comfortable doing a repair yourself. The FAQ says replacement modules are sold through Fairphone’s European webshop. That makes the repair option most straightforward for European owners; availability elsewhere, current stock and the price of each component should be checked directly before treating a repair as a realistic alternative to replacement.

Some components are not routine user-replacement options. Fairphone says the PCB and USB-C module can be repaired as expert operations, but they are not currently offered in its shop. So the modular design does not mean every fault can be fixed at home or that every part can be ordered in every market.
Does repairability make ownership cheaper or more sustainable?
Replaceable wear parts and a battery create the possibility of keeping the headphones in service when a single component fails. Fairphone says the battery is designed to retain 80% capacity after 500 full charge cycles; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result in the reviewed material. In practice, the value of a repair depends on the failure, the part’s price and availability, and whether you are willing or able to carry out the work. The sources do not establish a total-cost saving or guarantee a longer lifespan for every owner.

Fairphone’s December 2025 press release says, “In a market where most headphones are replaced within a couple of years – mostly because of battery degradation or material wear and tear, the new Fairbuds XL invites people to reconnect with ownership and care.” That is the company’s framing; the reviewed sources do not provide an independent dataset verifying the market claim. The more concrete case is the design itself: a failed battery or worn cushion need not automatically mean discarding the entire headset if the right part is available and repair makes sense.
What should buyers know about the warranty?
Fairphone advertises three-year warranty coverage for the refreshed Fairbuds XL. Its Fairbuds XL FAQ describes coverage for manufacturing issues and excludes user-caused damage; it also identifies exclusions involving the battery and wearable materials such as ear cushions. Coverage depends on component and region, so read the current terms that apply where you buy rather than treating the headline warranty period as coverage for every part or type of wear.

Do not assume the 2025 coverage applies to the earlier Fairbuds XL. Fairphone’s FAQ says the previous version remains repairable but is not included in the extended warranty program designed for the refresh.

Who should consider the Fairbuds XL?
The Fairbuds XL is a particularly interesting option if you value keeping repairable products in use and are comfortable checking parts availability, paying for a replacement module and possibly handling a repair. Its joystick, comfortable fit and lively sound may also suit listeners who prefer a bass-forward presentation.

It is a less certain fit if your priority is the most detailed or spacious sound, a feature-rich companion app, or frictionless repairs regardless of location. TechRadar’s review offers useful impressions but not a complete head-to-head test, so it cannot establish an overall winner against Bose, Sony or other over-ear alternatives. Compare the current price, local part access and warranty exclusions alongside sound and ANC before deciding.
