Their main uncertainty is not the specification sheet but the lack of broad, independent long-term testing for sound, ANC, calls, durability, and battery aging.
What makes Fairbuds 2 different
Most true-wireless earbuds are effectively disposable when a tiny battery loses capacity or one side stops working. Fairbuds 2 are designed around replacing individual components instead. Fairphone identifies seven replaceable parts, including the batteries in both earbuds and the charging case. It also sells replacement batteries, a case core, and single replacement earbuds, so a fault does not automatically mean replacing the entire set.

The battery swap is intended to be both tool-free and glue-free. Fairphone says no tools are needed to replace a battery in either an earbud or the case. That is the defining advantage: you can address the component most likely to age without discarding working electronics.

The 8-hour and 6-hour figures are maximum claims in different ANC modes, not a single guaranteed runtime. Actual playback varies with volume, codec, call use, temperature, and connection conditions. The 40-hour figure includes recharges from the case.

How good is the sound?
Fairphone says the new 11 mm bio-cellulose driver is lighter and faster than the driver in the original Fairbuds and produces a brighter, crisper treble. What Hi-Fi reports that manufacturer claim. That points to a potentially clearer, more lively presentation, but the available coverage does not establish independent long-term comparative measurements or a standardized frequency-response test.
LDAC gives compatible phones a higher-bandwidth Bluetooth option than basic codecs. Whether you hear a meaningful improvement depends on the source device, listening environment, fit, and the recording itself. The practical conclusion is that Fairbuds 2 are no longer bare-bones on codec support, while their ultimate sound ranking remains unproven by a wide independent test set.

ANC, calls, and everyday use
Active noise cancellation
Hybrid ANC is included, rather than reserved for a premium model. However, no independent laboratory result establishes how much cabin rumble, office noise, or voices Fairbuds 2 remove. Treat ANC as a useful feature whose effectiveness still needs real-world verification, not as a measured performance claim.

Multipoint and controls
Bluetooth 6.0 dual multipoint is designed to keep the earbuds connected to two devices, such as a phone and laptop, reducing the need to disconnect and re-pair when switching. Capacitive touch controls handle playback and calls without a physical button.

Voice calls
Six microphones provide the hardware needed for voice pickup and noise processing. Available sources do not provide an independent call-quality test, so microphone performance in wind, traffic, and busy offices remains an open question.
Weather resistance
IP54 indicates protection against dust ingress and splashing water. It is not a rating for submersion, swimming, or charging the earbuds while wet. Wipe them dry before placing them in the case.

Battery life and replacement
With ANC disabled, Fairphone rates each earbud for up to 8 hours. Enabling ANC lowers the claim to up to 6 hours. The charging case raises total playback to up to 40 hours. Because these are maximum figures, buyers who listen loudly, use LDAC continuously, or make frequent calls should expect less.

- Obtain the correct Fairbuds 2 replacement battery for the affected earbud or case.
- Remove the relevant battery using the product’s tool-free opening design; no adhesive or specialist tool is intended to be required.
- Install the replacement and close the module securely before charging.
- If only one earbud fails, replace that single earbud rather than the complete pair; Fairphone also offers a replacement case core.
Check regional parts availability before buying. A replaceable design is valuable only when batteries and modules remain obtainable at a sensible price.
Are Fairbuds 2 more sustainable?
Repairability can extend useful life and reduce the need to throw away a complete earbud set when one battery or component fails. Fairbuds 2’s replaceable earbuds, case battery, and other modules make that path possible.
There is not, however, a published independent lifecycle-carbon statistic establishing how much less environmental impact Fairbuds 2 have than conventional wireless earbuds. The design supports longer ownership and easier repair; it should not be presented as a measured carbon-saving result. The environmental benefit also depends on whether owners actually replace parts and keep the earbuds longer.
Price and availability
Fairphone’s US product page lists Fairbuds 2 at $119.99. Launch coverage reported a European price of €119. These figures are region-specific launch or listed prices, and retailer stock and availability can change, so confirm the current price in your market before ordering.
Who should buy Fairbuds 2?
- Choose them if: you want to replace batteries yourself, keep a single earbud or case failure from becoming a full replacement, and value repairability alongside modern wireless features.
- Be cautious if: your priority is class-leading ANC, proven call quality, or a thoroughly independently measured sound signature. The available evidence does not yet establish those outcomes.
- Before purchase: verify that replacement batteries and individual modules are sold in your region, and check the return and warranty terms that apply to your market.
Bottom line
Fairbuds 2 make a compelling ownership argument: a mainstream feature set paired with genuinely replaceable batteries and modules. Their 6-hour ANC and 8-hour non-ANC ratings are competitive on paper, while LDAC, multipoint, and IP54 avoid the compromises associated with many repair-focused products. Buy them for the repairable platform and lower-waste potential; treat sound, ANC, calls, and long-term durability as areas where independent evidence is still limited.
