A green result means the invoice passed the checks that were actually run—not that every part of the invoice is correct. A PDF/A check, for example, does not by itself establish that embedded invoice XML is valid, that business rules pass, or that the visible PDF agrees with the XML.
Four ways a broken Factur-X invoice can still pass
These four cases are a practical way to understand gaps between validation layers, not an official four-item taxonomy. veraPDF documents validation against PDF/A and PDF/UA profiles; Factur-X workflows can add checks for embedded XML, invoice rules, and agreement between machine-readable and visible values.

1. The run checked the PDF/A container, not the invoice data
A PDF/A pass is evidence about the PDF container under the selected conformance profile. It does not establish that embedded invoice XML is correct or that the invoice’s business data is valid. veraPDF describes its validation profiles and scope in its validation documentation; the separate layers used in a Factur-X workflow are outlined in the Factur-X conformity report.

veraPDF can select a profile automatically using embedded conformance metadata, and its command-line interface also supports explicit profile selection. A pass is meaningful only in relation to the profile named in the result: confirm that it is the profile required for the file’s intended conformance target. 3. XML, invoice rules, or jurisdiction checks were not included
Factur-X validation may involve distinct checks for XML structure, the applicable Factur-X profile, EN 16931 business rules, and jurisdiction-specific rules. Passing one layer does not show that omitted layers also passed. For a concrete, dated example, the conformity report records this setup:

4. The visible invoice and embedded XML do not agree
Container validation and XML or business-rule checks do not, by themselves, prove that every value a person sees in the PDF matches its machine-readable counterpart. The Mustangserver 1.7.0 manual describes parsing an invoice into calculated values and comparing a supplied grand total with calculated item totals. That example supports checking specified values, not assuming every validation mode compares every rendered PDF field with every XML field. Consult the Mustangserver Manual 1.7.0 and the Mustang validator overview for the behavior of the particular workflow you use.

What to verify before relying on a green result
- Identify the PDF check. Record the validator and version, the PDF/A profile, and the profile shown in the report. Confirm that the selected profile matches the target you need.
- Map the invoice-data checks. Establish whether the run extracted the embedded XML and which XML schema, Factur-X profile, EN 16931 rules, and jurisdiction-specific rules it applied.
- Capture ruleset context. Record the jurisdiction, standard and ruleset versions, and the date or run associated with the result. Do not assume settings in one conformity report describe another installation.
- Check reconciliation explicitly. Determine whether the workflow compares values in the visible PDF with embedded XML, and list the fields it actually checks, such as totals.
- Describe the result narrowly. Report which checks passed and their scope. A green result alone does not establish that a particular recipient, authority, or other receiver will accept the invoice.
