- 600 × 315 pixels: the minimum size it associates with a larger link preview.
- 200 × 200 pixels: the minimum image size listed for a preview image.
- 8 MB: the maximum file size listed by that guidance.
The 1,200 × 630 target is therefore a sensible working size, not a guarantee that every Facebook surface will display the image identically. Facebook can resize or crop the card to fit the viewer’s device and placement.
Direct photo uploads do not have one official thumbnail size

How Facebook selects the image for a shared link
With a link post, the uploaded file is not necessarily the controlling asset. Facebook fetches the destination page and chooses an image it considers representative. For WordPress.com pages, the documented selection order starts with the post or page’s featured image, followed by other images in the content.
That means a correctly sized local file can still be ignored if:
- The page has no featured image and another image appears more prominent in the HTML.
- The image is blocked from being fetched or is not publicly reachable.
- Facebook has retained an older version of the page preview.
- The page contains several similarly sized images and Facebook chooses a different one.
Set the intended image on the page itself before sharing the URL. If you use a content management system, assign the image as the post or page’s featured image, then confirm that the page is publicly accessible without a login.
Prepare the image before you publish
- Choose the post type. Decide whether you are sharing a URL or uploading a photo directly. Use the link-preview workflow only for a URL card.
- Build the link image at 1,200 × 630 pixels. Keep important text, logos and faces away from the extreme edges so modest platform cropping does not remove them.
- Use one clear subject. A thumbnail is displayed small in the feed. A simple focal point and strong contrast are easier to recognize than a dense collage.

- Publish or update the page first. Facebook must be able to fetch the final page and image before it can build a current card.

Why Facebook may show the wrong or old thumbnail

Fix a stale preview
- Confirm that the new image is actually live on the public page.
- Check that the page’s featured image points to the intended file and that the file is reachable without authentication.
- Open Facebook’s Sharing Debugger for the URL.
- Choose Scrape Again to request a fresh fetch.
- Inspect the resulting preview. If it is still wrong, verify the page’s image selection and repeat the check after the page cache has cleared.
Rescraping updates Facebook’s fetched representation; it does not edit a thumbnail that has already been embedded in an old screenshot, article or message.
Design and file checks that prevent avoidable problems
- Keep the composition horizontal for link cards. A tall image forces Facebook to crop more aggressively inside a wide card.

A capture cannot force Facebook to select a different image, but it can confirm that the page itself serves the right asset and that the layout remains intact before you rescrape.
