Before you message, pay, ship, or meet someone through Facebook Marketplace, check the item, the transaction terms, and the payment route. These ten practical checks help buyers spot unanswered questions and help sellers avoid common payment and verification scams. Marketplace features and protections vary by location and transaction, so confirm the terms shown for your specific deal.
1. Make sure the photos show the actual item
Read the description carefully, especially words about wear, defects, missing parts, or repairs. Look for several photos of the item being sold, including close-ups of any damage. The FTC advises buyers to look for multiple photos of the actual item; stock images alone do not establish that the seller has it.

If a detail could change your decision, ask about it before arranging payment or pickup. For example: “Does the screen have scratches?” or “Are the charger and all listed accessories included?” Keep the answer in Messenger.
2. Treat seller profiles and ratings as clues
Review the seller information and ratings available on the listing, but do not treat them as a guarantee. Meta says seller ratings become public after the seller receives five or more ratings. It also says it does not verify whether reviewers bought or used the item or service. A rating can help you decide what to ask; it cannot establish an item’s condition or guarantee a safe transaction.

3. Compare the asking price with the item’s condition
An unusually low price for an expensive item deserves follow-up, but price alone does not prove a listing is fraudulent. Compare listings for similar items, accounting for age, condition, included parts, and the total cost after any shipping or delivery charge.
Ask specific questions about defects and whether you can inspect the item before paying. A seller who will not clarify an important condition issue leaves you with less information, whatever the price.

4. Read the transaction terms before committing
Do not assume Marketplace handles every payment, delivery, return, or complaint in the same way. Check the terms displayed for the specific listing and checkout flow, including any deadline or process for requesting help. The FTC recommends understanding the marketplace’s policies before buying; what matters is the policy that applies to your transaction, not a general assumption about the platform.
5. Avoid payment methods that are hard to recover
The FTC warns marketplace buyers against paying with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. These methods can make it difficult to recover money if the deal goes wrong. Be cautious with person-to-person transfers too: do not assume they offer the same protections as a purchase completed through an eligible checkout flow.

Before sending money, confirm who is receiving it, what the payment is for, and what refund or dispute process applies. If the seller pressures you to switch to a method you cannot evaluate or recover, pause the transaction.
6. Verify that a buyer’s payment actually arrived
If you are selling, check your payment account or service directly before handing over or shipping the item. A screenshot, email, or buyer’s claim is not proof that funds arrived. The FTC documents fake payment notices, fake checks, and overpayment scams in online selling.

Do not send money back because a buyer claims to have overpaid or asks you to refund an apparent excess. Confirm the payment independently and resolve any discrepancy through the payment service rather than sending a separate refund.
7. Keep a record of what you agreed
Save the listing description, messages, agreed price, pickup or delivery arrangements, and relevant payment records. The FTC recommends keeping copies of messages and written answers; they can help if you need to report a problem or dispute a transaction. Make sure the record reflects the final terms, especially if the price or arrangements change during the conversation.

8. Never share a verification code to complete a sale
A buyer or seller should not need a code sent to your phone to complete an ordinary item sale. The FTC identifies requests for a Google Voice verification code as an online-selling scam pattern. If someone asks you to read or forward a code, stop responding and do not share it.
9. Plan an in-person meetup deliberately
Use Meta’s current in-app safety guidance for Marketplace meetups, including its meetup-planning feature where available. Share your plan with someone you trust, and choose a time and arrangement that suit the item and circumstances. Consider how you will inspect and transport the item; a bulky item, for example, may require a different plan from a small item you can carry.
10. Confirm shipping and protection for this transaction
Check whether shipping or delivery is available for your location and listing, and what help or protection applies to the exact transaction route. Meta says shipping depends on location, and delivery is not available everywhere. Meta-affiliated educational material says eligible purchases made through Facebook checkout may have Purchase Protection, while local-pickup person-to-person transactions do not. Eligibility and terms matter, so read the live information shown for the purchase rather than assuming coverage applies.

A quick check before you commit
- Item: Do the photos show the actual item, and have you clarified important condition questions?
- Total cost: Have you included shipping or delivery charges and considered the item’s condition?
- Payment: Do you know how the money will be sent and what help or refund process applies?
- Seller signals: Have you reviewed available profile information without treating ratings as proof?
- Handoff: Is pickup or delivery practical, and have you planned how the exchange will happen?
