Choose the service that matches what you actually do: Mastodon for public updates, Reddit for pseudonymous interest communities, Discord for organized groups, or Signal for private conversations. Bluesky is another public-posting network, but its current documentation says profiles, posts, likes, and blocks are public.
Privacy depends on more than whether a company sells personal information. Check who can see content, who operates the service, what identifier you must provide, how content is retained or deleted, and how moderation and discovery work. The comparison below treats those details separately so you can move the part of your social life that matters most without assuming any service is a complete Facebook substitute.

Start with the Facebook use case you want to replace
Facebook combines several products: a public-facing timeline, pages and follows, interest groups, event coordination, direct messages, and identity-based networking. A privacy-conscious alternative usually works best when you replace one of those functions rather than searching for one service that imitates all of them.
| What you need | Most relevant options | Audience and privacy starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Public updates and following people | Mastodon; Bluesky | Public or broadly discoverable posting. Mastodon adds independent server governance; Bluesky currently has no private profiles. |
| Interest-based discussion | Reddit; Mastodon communities | Community-scoped conversations, often under a pseudonym. Read each community’s rules and visibility settings. |
| Organized group spaces | Discord | Can be private or discoverable depending on the server and channel arrangement; the platform still processes content and account data. |
| Private one-to-one or group conversations | Signal | Designed for private communication rather than a public timeline; registration requires a phone number. |
The services create different audiences. A public post can be copied, indexed, or viewed by people you never intended to reach. A community post may be visible to every member, not only your friends. A private chat reduces audience exposure but still involves account identifiers, metadata, backups or devices, and the provider’s operating jurisdictions.

Mastodon: federated public posting with server-level choices
How it works
Mastodon is a decentralized network of independently operated servers, often called instances. You select one provider, create an account there, and can follow people on other servers. Mastodon’s official product description puts the structure plainly: “Each Mastodon server is a completely independent entity, able to interoperate with others to form one global social network.”
Feeds are chronological and user-curated rather than arranged by an advertising-driven recommendation feed, and the service advertises no ads. The trade-off is governance: each server sets its own moderation rules, code of conduct, administrative policies, and technical practices. Federation lets accounts interact across servers; it does not make those servers identical.
What to check before joining
- Read the selected server’s privacy policy, moderation rules, retention language, and information about administrators.
- Check whether the server permits your topics and has a practical process for reporting abuse or handling account disputes.
- Understand the visibility selector for each post. Public posts are not suitable for friends-only sharing; use a direct conversation feature when the audience must be narrow, and verify how the recipient’s server handles it.
- Consider the server’s location and operator. A small community server and an organization-hosted server can have very different staffing, backups, and legal obligations.
Mastodon’s official server directory is a starting point, not a certification that every listed provider has the same privacy or moderation practices. The directory and the main site also describe business hosting for organizations that want to operate their own server. Running a server can give an organization more control over administration and data handling, but it also makes that organization responsible for security, moderation, backups, legal requests, and uptime.
Moving your social graph
Mastodon supports moving a profile to another server without losing followers, according to its official documentation. Migration still requires planning: export what the interface allows, tell contacts where you are moving, and expect some account history, bookmarks, media, or mentions to need separate handling. The ability to move followers is not the same as transferring every post or private conversation.
Best fit and limits
Choose Mastodon when you want public updates, following, and community interaction without one company controlling the entire network. Do not choose it on the assumption that “federated” means private. Your chosen operator remains an important data and moderation decision, and public posts remain public to their selected audience.
Bluesky: a public network, not a friends-only option
Visibility you must understand
Bluesky’s current data-privacy help page states: “Currently, there are no private profiles on Bluesky.” The same page describes posts, likes, and blocks as public. That makes Bluesky a poor fit if your requirement is “only share with friends.” It can suit public conversation and following, but you should assume that activity is broadly visible.

The help documentation says a deleted post disappears from the user-facing app immediately, while the underlying text can take longer to be fully removed from storage. Deletion therefore reduces ordinary visibility without promising instant elimination from every system, cache, log, or copy.
Data practices and identifiers
Bluesky’s privacy policy, last updated August 14, 2025, says the company does not sell personal data and does not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. That is not a claim that the service collects no data. The policy describes processing account and device information, uploaded content, and other information needed to operate and secure the service. Where legally required, third-party services may conduct age or identity checks.
Use those statements as a specific trade-off: the stated advertising restriction may matter to you, while public activity and ordinary account or device processing may matter more. Review the policy and current product controls before posting identifying information.
Scale figures, with their qualification
In a January 29, 2026 transparency report covering 2025, Bluesky reported 1.41 billion posts created during 2025 and a range of 25.94 million to 41.41 million users during that year. These are company-reported figures, not independent estimates, and the range reflects the reporting method rather than a single audited user count.
Best fit and limits
Bluesky is an option for public posting and discovery. It is not an evidence-based recommendation for private profiles, a friends-only feed, or confidential conversation. Use a purpose-built private messenger for those needs.

Signal: private conversations instead of a public timeline
What Signal replaces
Signal is best treated as a private messaging and group-chat service. It does not reproduce Facebook’s public feed, page discovery, or open-ended community browsing. It can replace direct messages or small group conversations when the participants are willing to install it and exchange contact details.

The account detail people overlook
Signal’s Terms of Service state: “To create an account you must register for our Services using your phone number.” End-to-end encryption does not remove that registration requirement. Decide whether linking the account to a phone number is acceptable for your threat model, and remember that the people you contact may still know that number.
The terms also state that encrypted information and metadata may be transferred to countries where Signal or its providers operate. Encryption protects message content in transit and at rest under the service’s design; it does not mean that no metadata exists or that processing is confined to your country.
Best fit and limits
Use Signal when the audience must be a known set of conversation participants. It is not a replacement for public updates, broad interest discovery, or a searchable social profile. Establish how your group will verify contacts, handle lost devices, and invite new members before moving sensitive conversations.

Reddit: pseudonymous communities and discussion
Why it can fit
Reddit organizes conversation around communities and topics rather than a real-name friends graph. Reddit’s privacy page says, “We don’t require your real name or photo to create an account.” That can reduce the amount of identity information displayed publicly and makes Reddit a practical option for interest-based discussion under a pseudonym.
Reddit also says shared image and video location data and personal metadata are stripped, and that Anonymous Browsing does not associate browsing and searches with an account. These are the company’s stated practices, not an independent privacy audit or a guarantee of anonymity. Browser fingerprints, IP addresses, writing style, public posts, moderator access, third-party screenshots, and information you volunteer can still make an account identifiable.
Audience and moderation
A post is generally visible to the relevant community and may be publicly discoverable unless that community is restricted. Moderators govern community rules, while the platform applies site-wide policies and processes account data. Read the rules before posting, avoid combining a pseudonym with identifying details, and treat every public comment as potentially permanent once others copy or quote it.

Best fit and limits
Choose Reddit for topic-based communities, questions, and discussion where a friends-only audience is not essential. It is not a private replacement for a personal timeline, and pseudonymity is a layer of separation rather than proof that nobody can connect activity to you.

Private versus discoverable spaces
Discord can work for clubs, classes, gaming groups, volunteer teams, and other organized communities. A server can contain invitation-only areas, while other servers or channels may be discoverable or open to large audiences. Check the server’s invitation process, channel permissions, member list visibility, and whether links can be forwarded before assuming a conversation is private.
What the platform says about data and revenue
Discord says it does not sell personal information and identifies subscriptions, paid products, and sponsored content as revenue sources. Its privacy policy, effective September 29, 2025, says content shared in larger spaces may be used to develop and improve services, including safety and catch-up features. “Private server” therefore describes the intended audience, not an absence of platform processing.
Use the smallest practical server and channel permissions, limit invitations, remove former members, and avoid posting sensitive information in broad channels. Review the controls that apply to your intended space because settings and product behavior can change.
Best fit and limits
Discord is strongest for ongoing group coordination and live conversation. It is not a public social network replacement if your goal is broad following, and it is not equivalent to a private messenger simply because an invitation is required.

How to choose without overpromising privacy
- Write down the audience. Choose “anyone,” “members of a topic community,” “members of an invited group,” or “named contacts.” Eliminate services whose default model is broader than that audience.
- List the identifier you can accept. A phone number may be acceptable for Signal but not for a pseudonymous community. A server account, email address, device information, or identity check can each change your risk calculation.
- Check who governs the space. On Mastodon, investigate the specific server. On Reddit and Discord, read community rules as well as platform policies. On centralized services, understand the company’s processing and moderation terms.
- Separate content privacy from data minimization. A service can restrict who sees a message while still processing account information, metadata, safety signals, or backups. Conversely, a pseudonymous public account can reduce displayed identity while exposing everything you post.
- Plan discovery and exit. Tell contacts where to find you, reserve the same handle where practical, and identify what can be exported or migrated. Do not assume that followers, posts, media, messages, or group memberships move together.
A practical migration plan
1. Move one use case first
Start with the activity that creates the greatest privacy concern: sensitive conversations, a public identity, or a particular group. Moving everything at once creates confusion and encourages people to keep duplicating posts across services.
2. Set expectations with contacts
Send a short notice explaining where you will post, how private the audience is, and whether people need a new account. For a group, appoint someone to maintain membership and remove old invitations. For public posting, explain that the new service may have different discovery and moderation rules.
Best Value
3. Recreate access deliberately
Invite only the people who need access, use separate spaces for different audiences, and review member lists after the first week. On Mastodon, verify the server’s policy before treating cross-server contacts as trusted. On Discord, check every channel’s permissions rather than relying on the server’s overall label.
4. Reduce the old account’s exposure
After contacts have moved, remove stale profile details, delete posts you no longer want publicly available where the service permits, revoke unused connected applications, and sign out old devices. Deletion cannot retract copies made by other users, so avoid publishing a final archive of sensitive material merely to announce the move.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Reassess after the product changes
Policies and controls change. Bluesky’s help page is dated March 27, 2024, while its privacy policy was last updated August 14, 2025; Discord’s linked policy is effective September 29, 2025. Mastodon server details can change whenever an operator changes hosting, rules, or moderation staff. Re-read the relevant policy and server rules when your use becomes more sensitive.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a service “private” because it does not sell data. The statement addresses one monetization practice, not collection, visibility, retention, or legal disclosures.
- Assuming federation or pseudonyms erase risk. A Mastodon server still has an operator, and a Reddit pseudonym can become identifiable through public details or repeated reuse.
- Putting public content in a private-looking group. Members can screenshot, copy, forward, or invite others; larger Discord spaces may also involve service-improvement processing.
- Using Bluesky for friends-only updates. Its current help documentation explicitly says profiles are not private and that posts, likes, and blocks are public.
- Ignoring account identifiers. Signal requires a phone number, while other services process account and device information. Decide whether that linkage is acceptable before creating an account.
- Expecting a perfect migration. Social graphs, posts, media, private messages, and community memberships have different export and portability limits.
What a privacy-conscious setup looks like
A sensible combination may use different services for different audiences: a federated public account for updates, a pseudonymous community account for interests, an invitation-only group for coordination, and an encrypted messenger for sensitive conversations. Keep identities separate only if you can maintain the separation; reusing the same handle, profile photo, biography, and writing patterns can link accounts.
Before posting, ask three questions: Who can see this now? Who might receive a copy later? What account, device, or metadata does the service need to operate? Those questions are more informative than a single “privacy” label and remain useful when policies or interfaces change.
