For another client that browses F-Droid-compatible repositories, consider Droid-ify or Neo Store. To add more FOSS apps while keeping the official F-Droid client, add the IzzyOnDroid repository. For apps distributed through developers’ release pages, use Obtainium. Aurora Store serves a different purpose: it provides access to Google Play, not a FOSS-only catalog.
First, distinguish an app store client from a repository
A client is the app you use to browse a catalog and install or update packages. A repository supplies that catalog and the packages. Switching clients does not necessarily mean switching repositories, and adding a repository does not require replacing your client. F-Droid describes itself as “the app distribution ecosystem for Android where your user freedom comes first” (F-Droid).
That distinction leads to four different choices: another client for F-Droid-compatible repositories, an additional repository for the official client, a release-page tracker, or a client for Google Play.
Compare the main options
| Option | What it browses or follows | Setup and update approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Droid-ify | F-Droid-compatible repositories, including IzzyOnDroid | Alternative repository client; IzzyOnDroid says its repository is configured in the app | It is a client, not a separate repository (IzzyOnDroid) |
| Neo Store | F-Droid-compatible repositories, including IzzyOnDroid | Alternative repository client; IzzyOnDroid says its repository is configured in the app | It is a client, not a separate repository (IzzyOnDroid) |
| Official F-Droid client with IzzyOnDroid | F-Droid plus the added IzzyOnDroid FOSS repository | Add the repository manually with the URL or QR flow described by IzzyOnDroid | Keeps the official client while adding a source; repository contents are curated by IzzyOnDroid (IzzyOnDroid) |
| Obtainium | Upstream project release pages, including GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg/Forgejo, F-Droid, and IzzyOnDroid | Tracks individual app releases and installs or updates from those pages | It is a release-tracking route rather than a single central catalog (F-Droid Obtainium listing) |
| Aurora Store | Google Play catalog | Unofficial client to Google Play | Not a FOSS-only store; depends on Google Play servers, and its listing says app-list and system details are sent to those servers by default (F-Droid Aurora Store listing) |
Choose by what you want to change
You want a different browsing app, not a different catalog
Try Droid-ify or Neo Store if you want an alternative interface for F-Droid-compatible repositories. IzzyOnDroid recommends both and says its repository is already configured in each. The catalog source and the browsing client remain separate parts of the setup.

You want more FOSS apps but prefer the official F-Droid client
Add IzzyOnDroid as a repository instead of replacing the client. Follow the repository URL or QR instructions on the IzzyOnDroid site. IzzyOnDroid describes itself as a curated repository for free and open-source Android apps. It says it scans apps and publishes scan results, and checks whether a rebuilt app matches the distributed APK as an indicator of reproducible-build status. Those checks are useful information about the repository’s process; they are not a guarantee that every app is secure.
You want to follow developers’ own release pages
Choose Obtainium when you would rather track an app at its upstream release source than rely only on a central catalog. Its listing describes installing and updating apps from release pages and names GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg/Forgejo, F-Droid, and IzzyOnDroid as supported sources (Obtainium’s F-Droid listing). This approach can suit projects whose releases you already follow, but it means dealing with app sources on an individual basis.

You need access to apps distributed through Google Play
Aurora Store is an unofficial FOSS client to Google Play, so it can address access to that catalog. It does not turn Google Play into an open-source-only catalog. Its F-Droid listing says Aurora depends on Google Play servers and sends app-list and system details to those servers by default (Aurora Store’s F-Droid listing). Consider that data flow before choosing it.
A quick decision path
- Want another interface for F-Droid-compatible repositories? Choose Droid-ify or Neo Store; IzzyOnDroid says each includes its repository.
- Want to retain the official F-Droid app and broaden its sources? Add IzzyOnDroid using the URL or QR setup on its site.
- Want apps tracked from project release pages? Use Obtainium and select the upstream sources you intend to follow.
- Want the Google Play catalog? Consider Aurora Store only with its Google Play dependency and default data reporting in mind.
What these choices do not establish
These options have different scopes and workflows, not a documented overall performance ranking. The available listings do not establish that every app in any repository is safe, nor do they support a blanket security claim about an individual client. App versions, repository contents, client behavior, and privacy disclosures can change; check each project’s current listing and repository information when deciding what to install.
