Ten extreme-weather events across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba during summer 2026 caused more than $1.8 billion in estimated insured damage, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). The figure is an initial Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. (CatIQ) estimate—not a final claims tally or a measure of all costs to affected communities.

How much damage occurred in the Prairies this year?

IBC reported the estimate on September 22, 2026, attributing it to CatIQ. The total covers ten events from May 14 through August 23 across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. IBC says heavy rain and flooding caused most of the damage, a shift from the wind, hail and wildfire risks often associated with Prairie summers. IBC’s release and event estimates.

The largest item in IBC’s list was the June 9–10 outbreak in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, with more than $900 million in initial insured-loss estimates. The storms included tornadoes, hail, damaging winds, torrential rain and flash flooding, affecting tens of thousands of residents and businesses.

Which events made up the estimate?

The following figures are the initial estimates attributed to CatIQ and published by IBC; they are not an independently compiled claims ledger. “More than” reflects the way IBC reports several event estimates.

Dates Area Hazards described by IBC Initial insured-loss estimate
May 31–June 2 Edmonton area Flooding More than $80 million
June 9–10 Saskatchewan and Manitoba Tornadoes, hail, damaging winds, torrential rain and flash flooding More than $900 million
June 20–21 Central Alberta Flooding More than $160 million
June 26–30 Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba Flooding More than $160 million
July 4–6 Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario Flooding, hail and wind More than $270 million
July 10–11 Alberta and Saskatchewan Storms More than $140 million

These are six of the ten events listed by IBC; the table does not assign estimates to the other four. The Prairie-wide total should not be read as an Edmonton-only figure. IBC separately says Edmonton experienced record rainfall in June and July, with event descriptions noting flooded basements, roads, public spaces and streets, as well as overwhelmed sewer systems in and around the city.

What does “insured damage” include—and leave out?

The $1.8 billion-plus figure describes estimated insured losses, not the complete financial toll. It does not capture uninsured property damage or wider household, business and public costs such as disruption and repairs to community infrastructure.

Statistics Canada’s national analysis cites a broad historical estimate of $2–$4 in uninsured costs for every $1 in insured costs. That is not a measured multiplier for the 2026 Prairie events and should not be applied to the $1.8 billion figure as though it were an event-specific calculation. Statistics Canada’s analysis of insurance and disaster costs.

How does this compare with losses elsewhere in Canada?

IBC says insured extreme-weather losses across Canada averaged $3.7 billion a year over the last decade, compared with $1.4 billion annually in the preceding decade and $883 million in the decade before that. These are national historical averages, not Prairie-only figures.

IBC also describes 2024 as Canada’s costliest year on record, with more than $9.4 billion in insured extreme-weather losses. Statistics Canada reports $8.6 billion in catastrophic claims for 2024 and $2.4 billion for 2025 in a separate series based on its analysis of insurer financial statements. The two sources use different measures, so their figures are not interchangeable. Statistics Canada’s explanation of its series.

Why could the total change?

IBC describes the CatIQ estimates as initial and says the event descriptions and estimates are reproduced under licence. Claims may continue to develop, so the reported amount should not be described as the final value of claims paid. The release is an estimate of insured damage, not an audited accounting of all losses.

What resilience measures does IBC recommend?

IBC’s recommendations include avoiding high-risk flood and wildfire areas in land-use planning, encouraging practical damage-reduction improvements by homeowners, investing in community flood protection and resilient infrastructure, strengthening building standards, and giving residents and businesses clear risk information. These are policy recommendations; the available event figures do not establish that any particular measure would have prevented these losses.

The Government of Canada’s climate-plan page describes basement flood-proofing among possible resilience measures under its retrofit program. Program details and eligibility can change, so consult the current Government of Canada climate-resilient buildings information for current terms.

What the figures do—and do not—establish

The reported losses document the financial scale of a damaging Prairie summer and the prominence of rain and flooding in IBC’s account. They do not, on their own, establish that climate change caused any particular storm in the list. IBC Vice-President for Pacific and Western Aaron Sutherland said the events’ “growing frequency, severity, and financial cost” demand stronger protection and more investment in resilience; that is IBC’s advocacy position, not an event-specific attribution finding.
