Short answer: choose a compatible external GPU (eGPU) if you already enjoy a handheld and mainly want desktop-class graphics when docked. Choose a gaming laptop if you want one self-contained portable computer and do not want to carry, connect, and maintain a separate graphics dock. There is no universal performance-per-dollar winner: the right choice depends on your exact handheld, connection standard, display setup, budget, and how often you play away from a desk.
What you are actually comparing
An external-GPU setup keeps your handheld PC as the primary computer. At a desk, you connect it to a graphics dock containing a discrete GPU, then attach a monitor, keyboard, mouse, network connection, and other accessories as needed. Away from the desk, you unplug the dock and continue using the handheld’s built-in screen and controls. This is an expansion path for a device you already own, not a replacement handheld.

A gaming laptop puts the processor, graphics hardware, display, keyboard, battery, and operating system in one machine. You can carry it between locations and play without a dock. It may still use a monitor or USB-C hub at a desk, but its core gaming capability does not depend on a separate graphics enclosure.
Those designs solve different portability problems. The eGPU route preserves the console-like controls and small size of a handheld for travel, while adding a desk-only graphics system. The laptop route minimizes the number of devices and cables you carry. Neither description is a benchmark result; it is an ownership and usage distinction.

Compatibility is the first decision gate
A USB-C-shaped socket does not prove that a handheld can run an eGPU. The port must expose a suitable high-bandwidth connection, the operating system and drivers must support the graphics device, and the manufacturer must recognize the specific hardware combination.
Check the exact port standard
ASUS says its 2025 ROG XG Mobile is designed as an external graphics dock and recommends Thunderbolt 4 or USB4, together with an x86/x64 processor, for best compatibility. The dock itself uses Thunderbolt 5 for its graphics and peripheral connectivity, according to ASUS’s product information: official ROG XG Mobile 2025 specifications. A manufacturer recommendation is not the same as an independent performance test, so treat it as a compatibility requirement to verify rather than a promise of a particular frame rate.
Confirm the handheld model, not just the family name
Compatibility can change between revisions that look nearly identical. ASUS’s compatibility guidance specifically lists the ROG Ally X (2024) and notes that required BIOS versions may apply. Use the model number shown in your handheld’s system information and compare it with the manufacturer’s current list at ASUS support guidance for ROG XG Mobile compatibility and setup. Do not assume that an older model, a regional variant, or a future handheld inherits support automatically.

Before buying, record the handheld’s BIOS version, operating-system edition, and graphics-driver status. Follow the dock maker’s instructions for any BIOS update and install the required graphics and system drivers. BIOS support can be a hard prerequisite: a physically compatible port may still fail to enumerate the eGPU if firmware support is missing.

Separate dock connectivity from eGPU capability
An ordinary USB-C dock can provide video output, USB ports, Ethernet, charging, and card readers. It does not turn the handheld’s integrated graphics into a discrete external GPU. ASUS presents the XG Mobile as a graphics dock combined with dock-style connectivity. If your goal is simply to connect a monitor and peripherals, a regular dock may be sufficient; if you need additional rendering hardware, it is not an equivalent substitute.
How the two setups fit different play habits
| Question | Handheld plus compatible eGPU | Gaming laptop |
|---|---|---|
| What you carry for mobile play | The handheld, its charger, and normal accessories; the graphics dock can stay at home. | One computer and its charger, usually with no separate graphics box. |
| What you carry for desk gaming | Handheld, eGPU dock, dock power supply, display cable, and any peripherals. | The laptop and its charger; a monitor and peripherals are optional. |
| Built-in controls away from a desk | Yes, because the handheld remains your mobile system. | Usually a keyboard and touchpad; gamepad use requires a separate controller unless the model has unusual integrated controls. |
| Single-device simplicity | No. The dock is a second major component and must be connected correctly. | Yes. The computer, display, input devices, and graphics hardware are integrated. |
| Desk-only graphics expansion | Yes, when the handheld, port, firmware, drivers, and dock are compatible. | Not through an eGPU requirement; the laptop uses its internal graphics system unless it separately supports an external GPU. |
The practical trade-off is therefore not “portable versus non-portable.” Both can travel. It is one portable computer versus a handheld that becomes a more powerful desk system only when its dock is present.
Performance: what can and cannot be concluded
An eGPU can add a discrete graphics processor to a handheld that would otherwise rely on integrated graphics. That makes the concept attractive for higher-resolution gaming or demanding visual settings at a desk. However, the connection, processor, memory bandwidth, cooling, power limits, game engine, and display path all affect the result.

What a fair comparison would hold constant
- The same game build and graphics API.
- The same resolution, refresh rate, upscaling mode, ray-tracing setting, and frame cap.
- Comparable power profiles, plugged-in operation, and thermal conditions.
- The same external display connection. Rendering on the handheld’s internal screen can follow a different path from rendering directly to an external monitor.
- The complete purchase: handheld, dock, power supply, and accessories versus laptop, charger, and any required peripherals.
If a review or test does not disclose those conditions, treat its numbers as device-specific observations rather than a general answer to this comparison.
Total cost: compare the complete system
No current, matched prices are established here, so a responsible buying decision should start with a worksheet rather than a claimed dollar advantage. An eGPU purchase is never just the advertised GPU or dock price. Include the handheld if you do not already own one, the graphics dock, its power supply, any required cable, a monitor if you need one, and peripherals. Also account for the value of a compatible handheld’s mobile use, since that is part of what you are buying.
For a laptop, include the computer, charger, storage or memory configuration you actually need, and any monitor or controller you plan to add. A lower sticker price can cease to be lower after accessories and upgrades are included; the reverse can also happen when you already own a suitable handheld. Use recurring costs only when they are real for your setup, such as replacement chargers or additional storage, and do not treat an unverified promotional price as a normal cost.
A simple ownership worksheet
| Cost line | Handheld plus eGPU | Gaming laptop |
|---|---|---|
| Primary computer | Existing handheld value or its purchase price | Laptop purchase price |
| Graphics hardware | Compatible eGPU dock and included GPU, if applicable | Included laptop GPU |
| Power equipment | Handheld charger plus dock power supply | Laptop charger; a second charger is optional |
| Display and input | External monitor, keyboard, mouse, and cables if needed | External monitor, keyboard, mouse, or controller if needed |
| Mobility equipment | Case, travel charger, and the weight of carrying the handheld separately from the dock | Case and travel charger |
| Known current price in the available evidence | Not stated | Not stated |
Fill the table with current prices for your region on the same date. Do not compare a bare dock with a complete laptop or omit a charger simply because one is already in another room.

Step-by-step: verify an eGPU purchase before ordering
- Identify the exact handheld. Copy the full model name and revision from the system information screen or the original invoice. “USB-C handheld” is not a sufficient specification.
- Inspect the manufacturer’s compatibility page. Look for your exact model, the required connection standard, supported operating systems, and any restrictions on display or charging. For the 2025 ROG XG Mobile, start with ASUS’s compatibility and instruction page.
- Record the BIOS requirement. If the page specifies a minimum BIOS, compare it with the version installed on your handheld. Plan the update before connecting the dock, and keep the handheld on reliable power during firmware work.
- Confirm processor architecture and drivers. ASUS recommends an x86/x64 processor for best compatibility with the 2025 XG Mobile. Verify the operating system and install the graphics, chipset, and dock software versions the manufacturer specifies.
- Decide where the image will be rendered. Choose whether games will drive the external monitor directly or appear on the handheld screen. Buy the correct video cable and check the monitor’s resolution and refresh requirements.
- Plan power and cable placement. Allow room for the dock’s power brick and airflow. A cable that fits mechanically may still fail to provide the required data standard or stable connection.
- Keep a return path. Purchase from a seller with a clear return policy and retain the packaging until the handheld enumerates the dock, the display works, and a representative game runs.
Typical eGPU setup and first-use checks
Exact menus differ by manufacturer, so use the dock’s current manual for the final sequence. The following order prevents common avoidable failures:
- Update the handheld’s BIOS and operating system only as instructed by the manufacturer.
- Install the required graphics and dock drivers, then restart the handheld.
- Connect the dock’s power supply before attaching the data cable if the manual specifies that order.
- Use the specified Thunderbolt or USB4-capable port and the supplied or certified cable; do not substitute a charge-only USB-C cable.
- Connect the external monitor to the graphics dock, then power on the monitor.
- In the operating system’s display settings, confirm that the monitor is detected and select the intended resolution and refresh rate.
- Check the graphics device in the system’s hardware or device-management view. A warning icon, repeated disconnect, or unknown device indicates a support, driver, cable, or power problem.
- Test with a game at conservative settings first. Increase quality only after stability is confirmed, and note whether the game is using the external adapter.
- Use the manufacturer’s safe-disconnect procedure before unplugging. Removing a live high-bandwidth connection during rendering can cause a driver crash or unsaved work.
Buying a gaming laptop instead
A laptop is the safer default when you want one machine that can be opened and used anywhere without checking a handheld’s eGPU support. Compare the laptop’s complete specification: processor, discrete GPU, memory, storage, display resolution and refresh rate, battery behavior, ports, weight, cooling design, and charger size. The GPU label alone does not describe sustained performance, and a thin chassis may use different power limits from a larger model with the same nominal GPU.
Check whether the games you play require a controller, because a laptop’s built-in keyboard and trackpad are not a replacement for handheld controls. A separate controller adds another item to carry, but it may still be simpler than transporting a handheld and a graphics dock. If you mostly play at a desk and occasionally travel, that distinction may matter less than the laptop’s screen, keyboard, and battery characteristics.

Failure modes and practical fixes
The dock is not detected
- Recheck the exact handheld model against the manufacturer’s list.
- Verify that the port is the supported Thunderbolt or USB4 connection, not a USB-C port limited to charging or ordinary display output.
- Install the required BIOS and drivers, then reboot both the handheld and dock.
- Try the certified cable and the connection order in the manual.
The monitor works but games use the integrated GPU
- Confirm that the monitor cable is connected to the eGPU dock rather than the handheld’s video output.
- Check the operating system’s per-app graphics preference and the game’s display adapter selection.
- Restart the game after changing the active adapter; some titles select hardware only at launch.
The connection drops under load
- Check dock and handheld power supplies, cable seating, and ventilation.
- Remove unneeded USB peripherals to isolate a bandwidth or power issue.
- Return to the manufacturer’s supported driver and BIOS versions instead of mixing beta packages.
The handheld works alone but fails with a future device
Do not assume the dock will transfer to your next handheld. Recheck the new device’s port standard, BIOS support, processor architecture, operating system, and the dock maker’s compatibility list before treating the existing dock as an upgrade asset.

Which option fits common ownership scenarios?
You already own a supported handheld and play mobile first
An eGPU is the more coherent expansion if your handheld is on the official compatibility list, you have a permanent desk or external display, and you are comfortable leaving a graphics dock there. You retain the controls and library you already use while gaining a separate desk mode.
You are buying everything new and want one portable computer
A gaming laptop avoids the compatibility investigation and the second-device cable routine. It is usually the more straightforward choice when you move between locations with no fixed dock, or when carrying one computer matters more than handheld ergonomics.
You mostly need a monitor, Ethernet, and USB accessories
Start with a conventional USB-C dock, provided your handheld supports the display and charging features you need. Buying an eGPU for connectivity alone adds cost and complexity without adding the graphics function you requested.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You expect to change handhelds frequently
Favor a solution whose compatibility you can verify for every planned device. Proprietary connectors and model-specific firmware can limit reuse; a generic dock may be easier to move between systems, but it will not provide eGPU graphics unless the connection and software support are present.
A decision framework you can apply in five minutes
- Start with ownership. If you already have a compatible handheld, count its value before pricing a replacement computer.
- Mark your primary location. Mobile-first owners should prioritize handheld controls; location-hopping owners should prioritize one-device simplicity.
- Pass the compatibility test. Exact model, supported port, BIOS, drivers, operating system, and display path must all be confirmed.
- Price the complete setup. Include power supplies, monitor, cables, controller, storage, and travel accessories.
- Demand comparable evidence. For performance claims, require tests using the same games and settings. Without that evidence, make the decision on usability and verified support rather than an assumed FPS advantage.
For a handheld PC owner, the eGPU is compelling when the handheld is already the preferred mobile device and desk gaming is the missing capability. The gaming laptop is compelling when simplicity, broad self-contained portability, and avoiding compatibility risk matter more than preserving the handheld-plus-dock arrangement.
