Using a USB webcam as a live video source depends on the phone, the camera, and the app. A USB endoscope or borescope made for Android OTG is the most defensible purchase if your goal is close-up inspection, provided you verify the requirements listed for that product first.
Three jobs that get called “external camera”
Most confusion comes from using one phrase for three separate tasks. Each has different hardware needs and different levels of official support.

Photo transfer from a compatible camera
This is the one use Samsung describes in its own support material. Samsung’s India support page, updated October 17, 2023, states: “Transfer photos directly from a compatible camera to the phone.” The word “compatible” matters. The page is about transferring files, not about turning a camera into a live feed.

- Get a micro-USB OTG adapter. The Galaxy S7 uses a micro-USB port, not USB-C, so a USB-C-only adapter is the wrong default.
- Plug the adapter into the phone’s charging port.
- Connect the camera to the adapter with the camera’s own USB cable.
- Open the phone’s gallery or file app and check whether the camera’s photos appear. Menu names differ by Android version and carrier, so look for the imported files rather than a specific menu path.
Samsung’s 2016 article on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge USB connector lists the On-The-Go Adapter (USB Connector) among items discussed for USB use. Bundles differ by market and by secondhand sale, so do not assume your phone came with one. Buy the adapter separately if it is missing.

Live USB video: conditional, not guaranteed
Android’s Open Source Project documentation on external USB cameras describes support that goes through an external camera provider. It states that this path does not replace the typical internal camera hardware abstraction layers, and that it is not designed for performance-intensive, high-resolution or high-speed streaming. It also does not give apps manual control over the image signal processor, sensor, or lens. Third-party apps can access USB cameras directly, but only if the device and the app both support the workflow.
That means a standard USB webcam will not be a dependable live camera on every S7 simply because it has a USB plug. Samsung’s own support pages do not establish that the S7 camera application uses USB cameras as a live source.

What to check on your specific S7
- Exact model. The Samsung Business Support page for the AT&T variant, SM-G930A, lists USB 2.0 and “MHL: No.” That is a carrier-specific product page. Do not apply it to other S7 models, and do not treat USB connection as proof of video output or live camera support.
- Android version. Check your phone’s current software version in Settings, since behavior depends on the Android build that is installed.
- Camera class. Look for USB Video Class (UVC) support in the camera’s documentation. A UVC camera is more likely to be recognized as a video device than a camera with proprietary drivers.
- App requirements. Confirm the app you plan to use accepts USB or external camera input. Many apps do not.
- Power. Running a camera through a phone’s port draws power from the phone. Check the camera’s power draw and whether your OTG adapter and phone can supply it.
USB endoscopes and borescopes
For inspection work, a USB endoscope or borescope made for Android OTG is a more specific product category than a general webcam. A Galaxy Store listing titled “USB Endoscope, Microscope, Borescope, UVC USB camera” states that the phone must support OTG, that an OTG cable is required, and that the app supports Android 6 through Android 13 and later. That is the app publisher’s stated requirement, not a guarantee for every camera or every S7 configuration. Read it as a checklist, not a promise.
Comparison points before you buy
When comparing products, these are the factors that matter. None of them is a tested result; they are the axes to check against your own needs.

- Connector: Confirm the probe’s plug type is a micro-USB OTG-compatible connection for the S7, or that an adapter is included.
- Cable length and probe diameter: These determine reach and whether the probe fits the openings you need to inspect.
- Lighting and focus: Check whether the probe has built-in LEDs and how the image is focused.
- Water and dust resistance: Look for a stated rating if you plan to use it in wet or dirty spaces.
- App support: Make sure the companion app is listed for your Android version and that the listing states OTG compatibility.
Checklist before buying any external camera for an S7
- Decide whether you need photo transfer, live video, or inspection. Each one has a different answer.
- Buy a micro-USB OTG adapter, not a USB-C adapter, for an S7.
- For live video, confirm UVC support on the camera and app input support on the phone.
- For inspection, match the product’s stated Android and OTG requirements to your exact phone.
- Test with the return policy in mind. Conditions can differ between phones, even within the same model name.
Where the evidence stops
The Samsung materials cited here cover photo transfer, OTG cables, and the S7 USB connector in general terms. The Android documentation explains platform architecture, not compatibility for each S7 model or app. The Galaxy Store listing is written by a third-party app publisher. No hands-on testing of specific cameras or endoscopes is represented here, and no compatibility rate, image quality figure, or performance measurement is established by these sources. If you need a specific camera to work for live video, the only reliable check is trying that exact camera, adapter, phone, and app together.
