If you remember a beach sunset, a red car, or children playing soccer but not the filename, a supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PC can now help you find the media by describing what it looks like. Microsoft Photos offers natural-language semantic search for photos and videos, while improved Windows Search extends meaning-based queries to File Explorer, the taskbar Search box, and Settings.
This is a retrieval aid—not a universal database that understands every spoken word, frame, folder, or video. Hardware eligibility, indexing, storage location, app version, language, region, and Microsoft’s rollout schedule all affect what you can use.
What intelligent media search actually does
Traditional Windows searches depend on text and metadata: filenames, extensions, dates, folders, camera information, and tags. Semantic search instead compares your natural-language description with indexed information about the media. Queries such as photos of the dog at the beach, birthday party pictures, sunset in New York, or videos from the mountain trip can surface likely matches even when those words are absent from the filename.
Microsoft documents this capability most directly in Photos, where natural-language searches can return matching photos and videos on Copilot+ PCs. Photos also retains conventional searches by filename, date, and file type such as PNG or JPEG (Microsoft Photos search documentation).

Photos, Windows Search, Copilot, and Recall are different
| Feature | Main purpose | Media relevance | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos search | Find photos and videos in the Photos library | Most directly focused on visual media | Requires supported Copilot+ hardware, visible locations, indexing, and feature availability |
| Improved Windows Search | Find files, photos, and settings | Searches through File Explorer, taskbar Search, and Settings | May combine local locations and other result types |
| Copilot semantic file search | Conversational assistance and, in some rollouts, semantic file discovery | Can help locate files and images | Behavior depends on rollout, account, app version, language, and region |
| Recall | Retrace activity previously seen or used on the PC | May locate a previously viewed image or document | It is not a catalog of your Photos library |
Microsoft describes improved Windows Search as combining semantic indexing with traditional indexing across File Explorer, the taskbar Search box, and Settings (Windows Insider announcement). Copilot’s semantic file search is a separate, staged experience (Microsoft’s Copilot rollout announcement). Recall is intended to help retrace activity, not replace media management (Windows Experience announcement).
Who can use it?
The key label is Copilot+ PC, not simply Windows 11 or “AI PC.” Microsoft defines Copilot+ systems as Windows PCs with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second. Microsoft’s Surface guidance identifies improved Windows Search among Copilot+ experiences (Copilot+ PC requirements and experiences).
Commercial guidance generally places the class at 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage alongside the required NPU, but exact feature access can vary by processor family, Windows build, Photos version, language, geography, account, and controlled rollout. A conventional Windows 11 computer can still search filenames, dates, extensions, metadata, and indexed text; it should not be assumed to have Photos semantic search.

How to search your media
Microsoft Photos
- Open Photos.
- Open the app’s Search area or search field. The placement and wording can differ slightly after Microsoft Store updates.
- Enter a concrete description, such as children playing soccer at sunset or red car outside a hotel.
- Review the returned photos and videos.
- If the results are incomplete, add a date, folder, filename term, or file type and try again.
Semantic matching is probabilistic. Specific subjects, activities, settings, colors, and locations usually provide more useful signals than an abstract query such as good memories.
File Explorer
- Open File Explorer and go to a folder or library containing the media.
- Use the search box and describe the file or image in natural language if semantic Search is available on the PC.
- For predictable results, add a filename fragment, extension, date, or folder filter.
Taskbar Search
- Select the Windows Search box on the taskbar.
- Type a description of the photo, file, or setting.
- Review the local results and open the file location when needed.
Taskbar Search can also show applications, settings, and web-oriented results, so not every result represents a file in your media library.
Indexing determines what can be found
Before semantic matching can work, Windows or Photos must discover the files and create searchable representations. Newly imported media may not appear immediately, and moving a large library can start another indexing period. Microsoft recommends connecting a Copilot+ PC to power while initial improved-search indexing completes; there is no fixed completion time because library size, storage speed, formats, power state, system load, and updates all matter (Windows Search privacy guidance).

Check the Windows indexing scope at:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Searching Windows.
- Open Advanced indexing options and review indexed locations and file types.
- Photos folders must be visible to the Photos app.
- Disconnected external drives cannot return results.
- Network shares and removable media can have different indexing behavior.
- Cloud-only files may need to be downloaded or made available through their app.
- Encrypted, corrupted, unsupported, or inaccessible files may not be searchable.
Privacy: local indexing is not the same as cloud AI
Microsoft says semantic-indexing data is stored locally on the PC—or locally within the applicable Cloud PC storage for AI-enabled Windows 365 devices—and is not stored by Microsoft or used to train AI models (Microsoft’s Windows Search privacy statement). That statement applies to semantic indexing; it does not make every Microsoft AI interaction local.
Keep these layers separate:
- Local Windows indexing: searchable representations held on the device according to Microsoft’s description.
- OneDrive storage: governed by synchronization, account, and cloud-storage settings.
- Copilot and Microsoft 365 services: separate service requirements, processing paths, and rollout conditions.
OneDrive Copilot requires Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, or a work or school account with a Copilot license, and Microsoft says availability is still rolling out (OneDrive Copilot requirements). It is not required for local Photos semantic search.
What it cannot reliably do
- It does not guarantee a transcript search through every spoken word in every video.
- It does not promise exact timestamps or frame-level retrieval.
- It does not necessarily index every NAS, removable disk, cloud-only file, or unsupported format.
- It can confuse similar objects, reflections, people, animals, colors, or locations.
- Results are a ranked shortlist, not proof that every matching file was found.
- Identical Windows 11 installations may show different interfaces because of staged updates, language, region, hardware, or account status.
Photos is therefore suitable for broad visual discovery, but professional archives requiring dialogue search, scene timelines, caption generation, ratings, sidecar metadata, duplicate detection, or deterministic cataloging need dedicated photo, video, or transcription software.

Fixing missing or poor results
- Confirm that the computer is a Copilot+ PC and that the feature is supported for its Windows build and region.
- Install Windows updates and update Photos through the Microsoft Store.
- Confirm that the media folder is visible in Photos and included in Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Connect the computer to power and allow indexing to continue.
- Simplify the query, then add a concrete object, activity, setting, location, or approximate date.
- Try a known filename, extension, date, or folder to distinguish an indexing problem from a semantic-matching problem.
- Reconnect external storage or make cloud files available locally.
- Reopen Photos or restart Windows after updates and indexing changes.
- If you need guaranteed transcript, timestamp, or professional catalog search, use a dedicated media-management workflow.
Is a Copilot+ PC worth buying for this?
It can be useful when you have a large, visually disorganized personal library and usually remember scenes rather than filenames. It is less compelling as a standalone purchase when your folders and naming conventions already work, your library is small, or your main requirement is professional video transcript search.
Evaluate the hardware as a complete computer purchase—battery life, memory, storage, display, ports, upgradeability, and other NPU features—not as a subscription-free replacement for a media catalog. The feature is primarily an eligibility benefit for supported hardware; buying a new PC solely to locate a few photos is difficult to justify.
