Exploratory Testing: Techniques and Best Practices

Exploratory testing combines learning and test design in a focused, adaptive session. Use a charter, timebox, evidence, and debrief to make it useful and repeatable.

Exploratory testing is a structured way to learn how software behaves while designing, running, and evaluating tests. It is not aimless clicking: a focused charter, a timebox, useful notes, and a debrief keep the work purposeful while allowing each observation to shape the next test. Use it alongside scripted and regression testing, especially when requirements are incomplete, changing, or time is limited.

What exploratory testing is—and is not

ISTQB defines exploratory testing as testing in which tests are designed, executed, and evaluated while the tester learns about the test object. Learning and testing inform each other: a result may prompt a new question, which leads to a different probe or a closer examination of a feature. The technique is experience-based, but it can incorporate formal methods such as equivalence partitioning.

“Unscripted” does not mean unplanned. The tester begins with a mission and scope, then adapts specific actions as the session unfolds. This differs from a scripted test, where detailed steps and expected results are set in advance. Exploratory testing complements formal techniques; it does not guarantee that a defect will be found or replace regression automation.

When exploratory testing is useful

It is particularly useful when specifications are inadequate, the product is changing, or testing time is under pressure. It can also help investigate a known risk, a previous bug, an important user workflow, or an area whose behavior is not yet well understood. The ISTQB syllabus describes these as suitable contexts, not strict entry requirements.

There should be enough working functionality for meaningful interaction. GOV.UK gives a beta before an initial MVP release or before a major feature release as examples. Experienced testers often bring useful domain knowledge, analytical skill, curiosity, and creativity; business analysts, product managers, and subject-matter experts can also contribute when they have the necessary testing skills. See the GOV.UK Service Manual guidance.

How to run an exploratory testing session

  1. Choose a mission. Identify a user workflow, product risk, prior bug, requirement, or open question worth investigating. Keep the goal focused enough to guide a session without scripting every click.
  2. Write a charter. State the system area, objective, and scope. Add the tester, time and place, environment, and test data when they help someone conduct or understand the session. A charter should point the way, not prevent useful detours prompted by evidence.
  3. Prepare the environment. Note the build or version, browser or device where relevant, account and permissions, test data, and any setup needed to make the work meaningful. Record conditions that could affect reproduction.
  4. Set a timebox. Choose a session limit appropriate to the mission and context. There is no universally correct duration established by the cited guidance. A limit helps prevent unscripted work from drifting away from its goal.
  5. Explore and adapt. Start with the charter, observe what happens, and let those observations influence the next test. Check normal use as well as boundaries, unusual sequences, and likely failure points. Record coverage items or areas visited as you go.
  6. Preserve evidence. Capture questions, observations, steps, unexpected results, screenshots, logs, and ideas for follow-up tests as appropriate. Write enough context that another person can investigate the behavior.
  7. Debrief and follow through. Share the charter, areas explored, findings, concerns, and supporting evidence with the people who need them. Turn useful discoveries into reproducible scenarios or automated checks where appropriate.

GOV.UK recommends timeboxing because a time limit can help focus a session on specific goals rather than letting it drift. A session that discovers a bug may also produce a test scenario that can later be automated.

What to include in a test charter

A practical charter describes the mission, not every action. For example: “Explore account recovery for confusing or unsafe outcomes, focusing on expired links and repeated requests, using the staging build and designated test accounts.” The charter can be adapted to the system and the audience reviewing the results.

  • Mission and goal: What question, risk, or behavior should the tester investigate?
  • Scope: Which feature, workflow, user role, or boundary is in and out of scope?
  • Context: Which build, environment, device, account, or test data matters?
  • Session details: Who is testing, and when and where is the session taking place?
  • Coverage prompts: Which important states, inputs, user needs, or failure patterns should not be overlooked?

Do not treat any checklist of charter fields as universally complete. A 2017 paper by Ghazi, Garigapati, and Petersen identified 30 factors influencing charter design and 35 possible charter contents through interviews with nine practitioners. The authors noted possible bias and limits to generalizability; those counts describe that study, not a required universal checklist. Read the paper.

Techniques and aids for exploration

Error guessing

Use knowledge of previous failures, similar systems, and common implementation mistakes to guide probes. Consider likely problems with inputs, outputs, logic, interfaces, and data. Treat guesses as questions to investigate, not assumptions that a defect exists.

Focused checklists

Use short prompts tied to user needs, known risks, or recurring failure patterns. Update them as the team learns; an overly broad or stale checklist can distract from the current mission. A checklist can improve consistency without turning an exploratory session into a fully scripted test.

Mind maps

A mind map can help organize observations and possible exploration paths without forcing a linear sequence. GOV.UK describes mind maps as quick to record and compatible with non-linear exploration.

Formal test techniques

Use a technique such as equivalence partitioning when it helps identify useful input groups or coverage. Exploratory work can combine such methods with adaptive investigation rather than choosing between the two.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to document findings and coverage

Record enough for the intended audience to understand what was explored and what should happen next. Session-based testing can use session sheets to document steps and discoveries; GOV.UK recommends capturing queries and observations, with notes, screenshots, or logs when they help replication or investigation.

Coverage can be sporadic and exact repetition can be difficult when actions were not specified in advance. A charter, timebox, coverage notes, evidence, and debrief make the work more visible without requiring every action to be pre-scripted. Track areas explored, findings and concerns, and proposed next tests; raw bug counts alone do not establish tester quality or product quality.

Exploratory, scripted, and checklist-based testing

Approach What is specified before execution? Adaptation during testing Coverage visibility and repeatability Useful context
Exploratory A mission, scope, and session structure; individual actions can remain open. High: observations guide the next test. Can be less visible and harder to repeat unless coverage and evidence are recorded. Incomplete specifications, changing systems, investigation, or time pressure.
Scripted Detailed steps and expected results. Usually more constrained by the predefined procedure. Detailed steps support repeatability and make intended coverage explicit. Repeatable checks and workflows with stable expected behavior.
Checklist-based Prompts or items to consider, without necessarily specifying every action. Some flexibility remains; the checklist provides consistency. Can improve consistency, but variability and lower repeatability may remain. Recurring areas or risks where reminders are useful.

These approaches can be combined. A tester can use a charter and checklist to guide exploration, then turn a confirmed discovery into a detailed repeatable test. A 2017 focus-group study at four companies proposed different levels of exploratory testing based on how charters are formulated and reported that combining levels may be beneficial; its abstract does not quantify a performance effect. If you need screenshots to preserve evidence during a session, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; the service accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should lead an exploratory testing session?

An experienced tester with relevant domain knowledge is a natural choice, but other team members can contribute when they have the testing skills needed for the work.

Can exploratory testing be automated?

The exploration itself depends on a tester learning and adapting in context, but discoveries can be developed into reproducible scenarios and automated checks.
