Exploratory testing is purposeful, adaptive testing: you learn how a software system behaves while designing and running tests, then use what you discover to choose what to investigate next. It is not unstructured clicking. A clear goal, careful observation, and useful records help turn exploration into findings the team can act on.
What is exploratory testing?
ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 defines exploratory testing as “experience-based testing (3.36) in which the tester spontaneously designs and executes tests based on the tester’s existing relevant knowledge, prior exploration of the test item (3.107) (including the results of previous tests), and heuristic ‘rules of thumb’ regarding common software behaviours and types of failure”. In practical terms, the tester learns about the product, designs and executes tests, and evaluates the results as part of the same activity.
The defining feature is the feedback loop: observe the system, form a question or hypothesis, try an appropriate test, and let the result shape the next test. Prior experience and what earlier exploration revealed both inform the work. That makes the session adaptive, but still directed toward a useful investigation goal.
When is exploratory testing useful?
Use it when the team needs to investigate behavior that is not yet well understood, when requirements leave room for interpretation, or when a change creates risks that are difficult to cover with a fixed list of steps alone. It can also help uncover questions worth converting into repeatable tests.

- Explore a user journey whose edge cases or failure states are unclear.
- Investigate an area with incomplete requirements or unfamiliar behavior.
- Look for risks introduced by a recent change.
- Follow up on an unexpected result from another test.
Exploration is not a substitute for checking known requirements systematically. It is one approach for learning about uncertain behavior and discovering tests the team did not already know to write.
How to run an exploratory testing session
1. Choose a goal and area
Choose a specific area of the product and a question worth investigating. A goal might be to find out how a checkout flow responds to interrupted payment, or whether a changed profile form handles unusual but valid input. GOV.UK practical guidance recommends stating a goal for each session.
2. Set a lightweight charter
A charter gives the session a mission and boundaries without prescribing every click. It can record the goal, scope, tester, time and place, environment, and test data. Keep it broad enough to allow new information to change the route.

For example: Explore password reset for account recovery risks, focusing on expired links and repeated requests; use the staging environment and the supplied test accounts. That states what to investigate while leaving the tester free to adapt.
3. Explore and adapt
Interact with the system, observe what happens, and ask what the result suggests. Try a relevant variation or follow a newly discovered path. If the system behaves unexpectedly, investigate the conditions around that behavior before moving on. The next test should be informed by the session’s evidence, not chosen at random.
4. Record observations and evidence
Keep notes as you go: the questions investigated, useful steps, observed results, unexpected behavior, and follow-up ideas. Save relevant screenshots, logs, or recordings where available. Include enough context for a teammate to understand the environment and investigate a possible defect.

5. Debrief and make findings actionable
At the end, report the area explored, how the session proceeded, defects or concerns found, open questions, and supporting materials. A useful finding distinguishes observed behavior from interpretation and includes the evidence needed to investigate it. Turn discoveries that deserve ongoing coverage into repeatable scenarios or automated checks.
Do exploratory testing sessions need charters or timeboxes?
No. Neither a charter nor a timebox is an inherent requirement of exploratory testing. They are useful practices, not prerequisites. A charter helps keep the mission focused while leaving test design open; a timebox can limit drift and make sessions easier to manage. Use them when they help the team, rather than treating them as a test of whether the work qualifies as exploratory.

A charter should guide investigation, not become a hidden script. Likewise, a time limit is a boundary for the session, not a reason to stop recording an important unresolved risk: note what remains to be explored and decide whether to continue in another session.

How exploratory testing complements scripted testing
Exploratory and scripted testing serve different needs and can support each other. Exploration is useful for investigating unknown behavior and generating new tests. Scripted or automated checks provide repeatable coverage for known expectations. When exploration reveals a valuable scenario, the team can turn it into a manual case or an automated test where repeatability matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What tools do you need?
No dedicated software is required. Pen and paper can be enough to begin. Depending on the team’s workflow, tools may help organize session notes, capture video or logs, attach evidence to defect reports, or convert scenarios into manual cases.
When evaluating a testing tool, consider whether it can capture and export useful evidence, connect findings to the session’s charter, support handoff to bug tracking or repeatable tests, and fit the team’s existing workflow. ISO/IEC 30130:2016 provides a framework for describing testing-tool capabilities; ISO reports that the standard was reviewed and confirmed current in 2022. Tricentis documentation for Tosca 2026.1 illustrates one vendor workflow involving session charters, scenarios, screenshots or video, and manual test-case generation. That example does not establish that one vendor is best, and the available sources do not compare vendors.

Capture a page screenshot as session evidence
For a web interface, a screenshot can preserve a visible state observed during a session. It is only one form of evidence: it does not replace notes about steps, environment, or behavior over time, and it cannot by itself establish why a defect occurred. You can capture a page manually in a browser, or use a screenshot API when a clean image of a URL is useful for the record.
Or skip the browser setup
For an API capture, make one GET request with the page URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and setup.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. A screenshot can support a web session record, but it is not a replacement for exploratory testing or a complete defect report. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Common session problems and fixes
- The session turns into random clicking. Re-state the question and area being investigated; use a charter if a clearer boundary would help.
- The charter dictates every action. Remove scripted steps that prevent adaptation. Keep the mission and scope, then let observations guide test design.
- A defect report is hard to reproduce. Add the environment, relevant test data, useful steps, observed result, and supporting screenshot, log, or recording if available.
- The session ends with notes but no follow-up. Debrief, identify open questions, and decide which discoveries warrant a repeatable manual scenario or automated check.
- The team treats a timebox as proof of coverage. Record what was and was not explored. A time limit controls the session’s duration; it does not establish completeness.
FAQ
Is exploratory testing the same as ad hoc testing?
No. Exploratory testing is adaptive, but it has a purposeful investigation goal and uses observations to guide the next test. Random interaction without a goal or useful evaluation lacks that discipline.
Can exploratory testing be automated?
Automation is useful for repeating known scenarios. Exploratory testing itself depends on a tester interpreting behavior and adapting test design; discoveries from a session can later be automated when repeatable coverage is valuable.
What should a session report include?
Include the area explored, how the session proceeded, defects and questions found, and supporting materials that help others investigate. Tailor the detail to the finding and the team’s handoff needs.
