A 2026 study describes an experimental light-based approach that selectively targets Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium associated with gum disease. In laboratory experiments and a mouse model, the treatment killed the target and was associated with less bone resorption and a shift toward a healthier-looking oral microbiome. It has not been shown to work in people, and the results do not prove that all beneficial bacteria are spared.
How the experimental treatment works
Called Near-Infrared Photo-Antibacterial Targeting Therapy, or NIR-PAT², the approach combines IgY-IR700—an antibody linked to a light-sensitive compound—with near-infrared light. The antibody is designed to bind to P. gingivalis; the light activates the conjugate to damage the targeted bacteria. The researchers compared its binding and bactericidal effects with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in laboratory experiments.

The distinction is selectivity: instead of aiming to kill a broad range of oral microbes, NIR-PAT² is designed to focus on a specific bacterium. That is a promising idea, but “without wiping out good bacteria” should not be read as a guarantee. The experiments support selective effects in the settings tested, not proof that every beneficial species is unaffected in people.

Maruyama and colleagues reported that NIR-PAT² killed P. gingivalis in vitro without affecting human cells in the tested setup. They also reported lower lipopolysaccharide release than with the comparison treatment. These are laboratory findings, not evidence of safety or effectiveness in patients.
#1 Best Overall
- 【INDEPENDENT RED LIGHT MODE FOR GUM COMFORT】 Unlike basic combo-only devices that force you to use red and blue light together, our device features a highly requested solo Red Light Mode. Red light is widely recognized to soothe gum discomfort and support oral vitality, while avoiding the potential interference of blue light with your mouth’s natural balance. Ideal for those concerned about gum recession or sensitivity.
- 【SMART CONTROLLER WITH GRADUAL TIMERS】 The upgraded smart controller features an easy-to-read display and 4 customizable timer options (5/10/15/30 mins). We recommend starting with the 5-minute session and gradually increasing the time to adapt to your different care stages. No need to manually track time—perfect for reading, working, or relaxing while using.
- 【DETACHABLE DESIGN PREVENTS ACCIDENTAL ACTIVATION】 The separate controller and removable mouth tray design offer two major benefits: First, it makes rinsing and cleaning incredibly convenient after every use, preventing water damage. Second, because the buttons are on the detached controller instead of the tray, you will never accidentally turn on the LED light while adjusting or cleaning the tray, completely protecting your eyes from unexpected glare.
- 【RED, BLUE & COMBINED LIGHT MODES】 Choose from Red Light, Blue Light, or Combined Mode depending on your routine. Red light therapy supports daily gum care and comfort, while blue light helps maintain a fresher, cleaner oral feel. If you wish to brighten your teeth, you can use the Blue Light mode in combination with your preferred teeth whitening gel (not included). This device is designed to complement, not replace, regular brushing, flossing, professional cleanings, or dental care.
- 【LONG-LASTING BATTERY & PERFECT HEALTH GIFT】 BBuilt with a 2600mAh battery for over 30 days of use based on a 5-minute daily session. For charging, use the included USB-A to USB-C cable. Do not use a USB-C to USB-C charging cable. Includes a compact, dust-proof storage case for home or travel. A thoughtful and practical gift to show your care—ideal as a christmas gifts, parents' birthday gift, or a special gift for women and seniors in your life.
For the animal experiment, the team used a ligature-induced periodontitis model in mice and assessed bone resorption and oral microbial composition. At day 14, measured alveolar bone resorption was 0.77 ± 0.082 mm in the sham group, 0.93 ± 0.018 mm in the periodontitis group, and 0.77 ± 0.085 mm in the NIR-PAT² group; the NIR-PAT² group differed from the periodontitis group (p < 0.001). These are mouse-model measurements, not estimates of benefit for human patients.
The researchers also reported a shift in the mice’s oral microbiome toward a health-associated profile, including partial restoration of commensal genera such as Streptococcus. This supports further study of targeted microbiome modulation, but it does not establish that the treatment preserves all helpful bacteria or prevents gum disease in people.

Is NIR-PAT² available to patients?
No evidence in the cited study or its publication establishes that NIR-PAT² is available as a treatment, has received regulatory clearance, or has entered a human clinical trial. The authors discuss possible future clinical use; that is not the same as a trial being scheduled or a treatment being ready for patients. The study was published on 2 June 2026 in Journal of Translational Medicine, volume 24, article 730. Read the primary study.

| Approach | What was studied | Evidence and population |
|---|---|---|
| NIR-PAT² | Antibody-photosensitizer conjugate plus near-infrared light, targeting P. gingivalis | Laboratory experiments and a mouse periodontitis model; no human clinical evidence established in the cited study. Maruyama et al., 2026 |
| Heat-inactivated Lactiplantibacillus pentosus ONRICb0240 postbiotic gummies | Gummies taken twice daily for six weeks alongside participants’ usual oral-hygiene routines | Double-blind randomized trial in 116 adults with gingival inflammation but no periodontitis. A sensitivity analysis found reduced bleeding on probing, and the treatment group had a lower gingival index. This was a separate intervention, not a test of NIR-PAT². Liu et al., 2026 |
| Antibiotic timing alongside mechanical periodontal treatment | Clinical strategies that differed in when antibiotics were started | Harvard School of Dental Medicine reported clinical improvements with both strategies; patients who began antibiotics at the start of treatment had faster and more sustained shifts toward a healthier oral microbiome. This does not test NIR-PAT². Harvard School of Dental Medicine, 23 March 2026 |
Does it replace deep cleaning or antibiotics?
No. The NIR-PAT² study does not establish that the approach can replace mechanical periodontal treatment, antibiotics, or other standard care. It is preclinical research, so patients should not change or delay care based on these findings. A dentist or periodontist can advise on treatment for an individual case.
