Gallium-based alloys have very low vapor pressure, so a TIM that looks hardened is more likely to have solidified, oxidized, reacted with its substrate or redistributed than to have simply “dried out.” The alloy, temperature history and contact surfaces determine which explanation fits.
What the experiment actually shows
A 2025 paper in the Journal of Microelectronics and Electronic Packaging states that metals do not dry out over time or lose performance because of temperature changes, although many metal TIMs are very stiff. That is different from saying a liquid-metal TIM will always remain visibly liquid.

Gallium alloys can undergo a genuine liquid-to-solid transition. A 2019 study in Materialia experimentally examined melting and solidification in eutectic gallium-indium-tin (Galinstan). A 2023 study further showed that gallium’s surface condition and nucleation can produce surprising results: smooth, oxide-covered gallium stayed liquid in cold water, while inserting a copper wire triggered rapid freezing.

Consequently, “dry” is usually an appearance-based description, not a diagnosis. A gray, crusty or immobile layer may be a frozen alloy, an oxide skin, an intermetallic reaction with copper, or material that has moved away from part of the interface.

Why gallium TIM can look hardened
Solidification below the alloy’s phase range
Commercial liquid metals are low-melting alloys. Indium and tin are added to gallium to lower the temperature at which the mixture remains liquid. The phase limits differ by formulation, so identifying the exact alloy is essential.
Indium Corporation’s published data for Indalloy 306 (68.5% gallium, 21.5% indium and 10% tin) lists a liquidus of 19 °C and a solidus of 10 °C. Those are manufacturer specifications for that product, not universal values for every gallium-based TIM. A sample that passes below its solidus can become solid even though no material has evaporated.

- Thermal Conductivity: Grizzly thermal paste has extremely high conductivity, perfect for even the most demanding configurations.
- Long Action: Conductonaut PS5 liquid metal has high thermal conductivity and is stable even with extended use. However, it CANNOT be used on aluminum components due to the risk of corrosion.
- Exceptional Results: Using this thermal compound will immediately lower temperatures, reduce equipment noise, and improve user comfort.
- Value for Money: Conductonaut is the best thermal paste for experienced users who want to enhance their system's thermals, as it provides up to 10 times more thermal conductivity than other thermal greases.
Supercooling and nucleation
Gallium can remain liquid below its normal melting point when crystal formation does not begin. An oxide-covered surface can suppress nucleation; contact with a suitable object, including copper in the 2023 experiment, can start rapid freezing. A cooler shutdown, transport or repair can therefore leave a TIM solid when it was liquid during operation.
Oxidation and interfacial reactions
Exposure to oxygen creates an oxide layer. The 2025 TIM paper warns that oxidation can degrade thermal contact and shorten service life. Gallium also forms intermetallic material with copper. These reactions can change the surface texture, spread the alloy unevenly or make removal look like scraping out dried paste.

How to distinguish solidification from “drying”
| Observation | More consistent explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Material becomes immobile after a cold period and softens when warmed within the alloy’s specified range | Phase change | Identify the alloy and compare the temperature history with its liquidus and solidus. |
| Thin gray or dull skin while material underneath remains mobile | Surface oxidation | Look for an oxide film and reduced wetting or contact. |
| Staining, pitting or a bonded-looking layer on copper | Intermetallic formation or redistribution | Inspect the substrate after removing the cooler. |
| Missing material near the edge of a package or cooler | Migration or leakage, not evaporation | Check containment and nearby components for contamination. |
Appearance alone cannot identify the mechanism. The alloy composition, confinement, oxide condition, nucleating surfaces and actual temperatures all matter.
Surface compatibility and electrical safety
Never apply gallium liquid metal directly to bare aluminum
Gallium-based materials are incompatible with aluminum and can damage it. Indium’s datasheet notes that anodizing aluminum can overcome this incompatibility, but the anodized layer must remain intact; a scratch or exposed edge removes that protection. Verify the cooler or heat spreader material before application.

Copper is usable but chemically active
Copper can participate in intermetallic formation with gallium. That does not mean every copper interface immediately fails, but it does mean the interface can change over time and should be inspected when a TIM is removed or replaced.
Containment is mandatory
Liquid metal conducts electricity. A spill or migration path can short nearby circuitry, so the application must include the insulation, barriers and containment specified for the particular product and device. Do not treat it like an electrically inert conventional paste.

What to do with a solid-looking sample
- Identify the formulation. Record the manufacturer and alloy, such as gallium, Galinstan or an indium-gallium-tin product. Do not infer its phase limits from another alloy.
- Reconstruct the temperature history. Note whether the assembly was stored, shipped or operated below the alloy’s published melting range.
- Inspect the interface. Look for oxide skin, copper staining, pitting, bonded regions and evidence that material has migrated from the contact area.
- Do not force the cooler apart while powered. Disconnect power, prevent conductive debris from reaching circuitry and follow the TIM maker’s removal instructions.
- Check substrate compatibility before reapplying. Exclude bare aluminum unless the manufacturer explicitly approves the intact surface treatment.
- Replace only after diagnosing the cause. Search for “liquid metal thermal paste” if a replacement is appropriate, then confirm alloy, cooler-base material, containment method and application procedure.
How liquid metal compares with other TIM choices
The relevant decision is not simply whether a product is liquid. Compare the following properties for the specific application:
- Thermal resistance and interfacial contact under the intended mounting pressure.
- Electrical conductivity and the consequences of leakage.
- Compatibility with copper, aluminum, coatings and solder masks.
- Containment and migration risk during transport or thermal cycling.
- Phase stability across the complete operating and storage temperature range.
- Application and removal difficulty.
- Expected service interval and the effect of oxidation.
The available studies establish liquid metal’s high-conductivity use case and its chemical and electrical risks, but they do not provide a controlled head-to-head test of every consumer paste or phase-change pad. Choose from the specifications for the exact assembly rather than assuming that a hardened appearance proves failure.
The practical conclusion
Liquid-metal TIM normally does not evaporatively dry out. It can, however, freeze, remain supercooled until nucleation occurs, develop an oxide skin, react with copper or migrate from the intended contact. Treat a hardened layer as evidence of a phase or interface change, identify the alloy, inspect the surfaces and verify compatibility before deciding whether replacement is necessary.
