Neither Expedia nor booking direct is consistently cheaper. The better deal depends on the exact hotel, room, dates, occupancy, cancellation terms, inclusions and mandatory fees. In a Which? comparison of 30 overnight stays, direct booking was cheapest half the time. Expedia can still win with OneKey member or mobile rates, packages and property promotions, while direct booking can be more valuable when you earn hotel points, elite credit or chain benefits.
Compare the final payable total for identical conditions, then add the value of points, breakfast, upgrades, flexibility and support. A small headline-price difference is not necessarily a saving.

The short answer: compare the stay, not the channel
Expedia is cheaper when its eligible member, mobile, package or property-specific rate produces a lower all-in total for the same room and rules. Booking direct is usually the stronger choice when the price is equal or close and you care about hotel-chain loyalty earnings, elite treatment, direct-channel guarantees or property-level assistance.

There is no permanent winner because hotels can distribute different prices, inventory, conditions and extras through their own sites and online travel agencies (OTAs). The United Kingdom government confirmed that hotels may offer a lower price on another OTA than on their own site or on another OTA after rate-parity restrictions were removed in 2015. A 2024 peer-reviewed study in the European Journal of Operational Research likewise explains how OTA commission and best-rate-guarantee arrangements can influence the prices each channel publishes.

Use this rule of thumb:
- Choose Expedia when its verified, all-in price is lower and you do not need hotel-chain points, elite credit or a direct booking guarantee.
- Choose the hotel when the total is the same or nearly the same and loyalty benefits, upgrades, breakfast, flexibility or easier property assistance matter.
- If the difference is small, treat the value of benefits and support as part of the price.
What the available comparisons actually found
Direct booking won half of Which? stays
Which? compared 30 overnight stays at 10 hotels across nine websites in 2024. Booking directly with the hotel was the cheapest option in half of the stays. The same investigation reported that calling the hotel could sometimes produce an extra, such as an upgrade or a bottle of wine. That is not a guaranteed discount, but it shows why the cheapest displayed rate is not the only outcome worth comparing.
Login status and device can change the result
A separate Which? investigation found one direct booking that was £13 cheaper. In another example, a Booking.com Genius Level 3 mobile view reduced the displayed price by £271. The figures are examples from specific searches, not a promise that an OTA or a loyalty tier will always win. They demonstrate that the result can change with the device used, whether you are signed in, and the loyalty level attached to the account.
Because those variables are material, compare Expedia while signed in to OneKey, the hotel site while signed in to its loyalty programme, and any permitted mobile or member view. Record the final total rather than relying on an initial search-card price.

Run the comparison in this order. Changing any one of these inputs can turn an apparent bargain into a different product.
- Set the same dates and occupancy. Enter identical check-in and check-out dates, number of adults and children, and any room-occupancy limits.
- Select the same property and room type. “King room,” “deluxe king” and “king with a view” may be different products. Check the bed configuration, view, size and accessible-room features.
- Match the rate plan. Compare refundable with refundable and non-refundable with non-refundable. Note the exact cancellation deadline, whether the rate can be changed, and when payment is taken.
- Match inclusions. Check breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking, airport transfers, resort or destination fees, welcome credits and other extras. A room that looks cheaper may simply omit an inclusion shown in the other offer.
- Sign in where it matters. Check Expedia OneKey pricing and any displayed mobile rate. Check the hotel’s member rate and the loyalty account that would receive points or elite credit.
- Advance to the final payment screen. Compare the amount actually payable, including taxes and mandatory fees, the currency, deposit requirements and any amount due at the property.
- Save the terms. Keep screenshots or PDFs showing the room, dates, cancellation policy, inclusions and total. They are useful if you later need to claim a price guarantee or resolve a discrepancy.
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s lodging-fee rule took effect on May 12, 2025. It requires mandatory short-term-lodging fees to be included in the advertised total and disclosed clearly. The rule does not remove the need to inspect the checkout page, but a mandatory resort fee should not be presented as an optional add-on. The FTC explains that a reasonable consumer would expect use of hotel facilities to be included with the stay.

When Expedia can produce the better deal
OneKey and mobile pricing
Expedia may show a lower rate to a signed-in OneKey member or in a mobile view. The saving is conditional: it may not appear when you are logged out, using a different device, or looking at a rate that is excluded from the promotion. Always compare the member total with the hotel’s own member rate, not with the hotel’s unrestricted public price.
Package pricing
A package that combines a hotel with another eligible travel component can reduce the combined price. The package total is not directly comparable with a room-only booking unless you separate the value of each component and confirm that the hotel room, cancellation terms and mandatory fees are equivalent. Package and opaque rates can also be excluded from price guarantees.

Individual properties can run promotions through Expedia that are not mirrored on their own websites. These may be tied to particular dates, room types, minimum stays or payment conditions. Read the promotion’s restrictions before treating the displayed reduction as a general saving.
When the guarantee can help
Expedia’s Hotel Price Guarantee applies only to an exactly comparable public rate. Expedia says the details must match, including the “property, room type, rate plan, applicable change and refund policy, hotel extras (eg Wifi), and the exact same dates of travel.” The comparison must also use the same occupancy and other displayed conditions.
Eligible members can receive an approved difference in OneKeyCash. The guarantee excludes membership-only, corporate, coupon, package, opaque and other restricted rates. Its terms also exclude taxes and fees collected by Expedia. Therefore, a lower-looking hotel-site figure that is a member-only rate, a coupon price or a different fee treatment may not qualify.

When booking direct can be the better deal
Hotel-chain points and elite credit
Qualifying direct reservations may earn a chain’s points and elite-night or status credit. They can also preserve member rates and chain-specific benefits that are unavailable, reduced or uncertain on an OTA reservation. Eligibility depends on the chain’s rules and the exact rate, so verify that the room and payment plan qualify before assigning a monetary value to the points.

A hotel’s logged-in member rate can beat its public rate even when an OTA appears cheaper to a casual visitor. Direct channels may also attach breakfast, late checkout, upgrade priority or other benefits to a qualifying member booking. Compare the complete package, not only the room line.
Direct-channel price guarantees
Chain guarantees can make a higher displayed direct price competitive. Marriott’s current Best Rate Guarantee, for example, says that an approved claim matches the comparison rate and gives the customer a choice of an additional 25% room discount or 5,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. The comparison must be a lower public rate found within 24 hours and must meet Marriott’s identical-condition requirements.
Hilton’s current terms state that Honors members receive a discount from 2% off eligible rates, depending on the booking circumstances. These examples are chain-specific; another hotel group can impose different deadlines, rate definitions, currencies and exclusions.
What to compare beyond the room price

Worked decision scenarios
Expedia is £25 cheaper with identical terms
Suppose Expedia shows the same room, refundable deadline, breakfast and mandatory-fee treatment for £25 less than the hotel. If the rate is public or otherwise eligible and you do not need chain points or elite credit, Expedia is the rational choice. Save the comparison details in case the price-guarantee process is relevant.

The hotel is £8 more but includes loyalty credit and breakfast
If the direct rate costs £8 more but earns qualifying points, an elite night and breakfast, calculate the realistic value of those benefits. A frequent guest who is working toward status may reasonably choose direct even though the room line is higher.
The OTA is cheaper only because it is non-refundable
Do not call this a saving against a refundable direct rate. First decide whether you are willing to accept the risk. If your plans could change, compare refundable offers or price the likely cost of losing the booking.
A package is lower but the room conditions are unclear
Confirm the exact hotel room, cancellation policy, taxes, resort fees and payment timing. If you cannot establish equivalent conditions, label it a different product rather than a cheaper version of the direct booking.

- Same rate plan and payment schedule.
- Same cancellation, change and refund policy.
- Same breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking, resort fee and other extras.
- Same currency and taxes or fee treatment required by the guarantee.
- Lower rate is publicly available and not a member-only, corporate, coupon, package or opaque offer unless the terms expressly allow it.
- Claim is submitted within the applicable time limit.
Expedia’s guarantee can pay an eligible difference in OneKeyCash rather than cash, and its terms exclude taxes and fees collected by Expedia. Marriott’s example uses a 24-hour window and offers either the extra room discount or points after approval. Read the current terms for the specific programme before booking on the assumption that a claim will succeed.
Common mistakes that make a “cheap” rate expensive
Comparing search-card prices
Search cards can show a base price before taxes, mandatory fees or a different payment schedule. Advance to the final total for both channels.
Ignoring the cancellation deadline
A rate that cancels seven days before arrival is not equivalent to one that cancels 24 hours before arrival. Record the date and time, including the property’s time zone when stated.
Forgetting occupancy and bed details
Changing one adult to two, or selecting a twin instead of a king, can change the inventory and total. Recheck these fields after signing in.

Assuming every direct booking earns points
Chains define “qualifying” reservations in their own terms. Third-party, prepaid, package and promotional rates may be excluded. Confirm eligibility rather than estimating points from the room price.
Assuming a guarantee covers every lower rate
Guarantees generally require identical public conditions. Restricted member, corporate, coupon, package and opaque rates are common exclusions, and deadlines are strict.
Valuing points at their maximum theoretical value
Use a conservative value based on how you actually redeem points. If you rarely stay with that chain, a nominal points balance may be worth less than an immediate cash saving.
A practical decision framework
- Establish equivalence. If the room, cancellation terms or inclusions differ, stop calling the results a direct price comparison.
- Use final totals. Include mandatory fees, taxes, deposits and amounts due at the property.
- Apply account benefits. Check OneKey, the hotel’s loyalty account and permitted mobile rates.
- Price the extras. Add a realistic value for breakfast, parking, points, elite credit, upgrades and flexibility.
- Check guarantees. If direct is higher, test the chain’s Best Rate Guarantee; if Expedia is lower, test its Hotel Price Guarantee only when every condition matches.
- Choose the channel with the higher total value. If the monetary difference is large and benefits are negligible, take the lower verified total. If the difference is small, favor the channel whose benefits and support you will actually use.
Bottom line
Expedia is not inherently cheaper than booking direct, and the hotel’s own site is not inherently cheaper either. Which? found direct booking cheapest in half of a 30-stay comparison, while other examples showed substantial OTA member or mobile reductions. Your result is stay-specific.
Search both channels with identical inputs, sign in to relevant accounts, compare the final total including mandatory fees, and inspect cancellation and inclusions. Pick Expedia when its verified all-in total is lower and you do not need direct-channel benefits. Pick the hotel when the price is close and points, elite credit, breakfast, upgrades, flexibility or a chain guarantee make the direct booking more valuable.
