Exium: Theia is an unreleased, solo-developed Steam science-fiction action RPG planned for October 2026. Its advertised difference from checklist-driven open worlds is not simply its setting: the game is built around leaving roads, finding locations without being led through every activity, managing survival and equipment resources, and turning scavenging, trading, factions, quests, and preparation into the adventure.

That is a design promise, not a review. Steam has not yet provided a released build from which launch quality, performance, price, reviews, or systemic world reactivity can be verified. The useful comparison, therefore, is between Exium: Theia’s documented mechanics and the contrasting habits of modern open-world RPG design.

What Exium: Theia is—and what is still unknown

Steam describes Exium: Theia as “a modern indie take on the old-school open-world RPG—where exploring off the main path is part of the adventure.” Steam lists it as planned for October 2026. It is not yet released, so there is no factual basis for judging its final combat feel, optimization, quest writing, content volume, price, review score, or launch stability.

The project is being made by one developer at Steamtrack Studios. That matters to expectations: the listing communicates a clear design direction, but a small-team production can still change substantially before release. Features shown in a store description should be treated as advertised systems until a playable version and developer documentation establish how deeply they interact.

Warhammer: the Old World Roleplaying Game, Gamemaster's Guide, Ages 14+
  • 192-page full color hardcover packed with tools and guidance to help gamemasters run immersive campaigns.
  • Includes expert advice for new and experienced GMs tailored to the Warhammer The Old World roleplaying system.
  • Features campaign-building tools like Grim Portents, Contacts, and Dark Threads to create dynamic narratives.
  • Expanded setting details for Talagaad with guidance for adapting adventures to other regions and stories.
  • Contains bestiary, magic items, downtime events, and corruption paths to enrich gameplay and surprise players.

The announced setting is a hostile science-fiction world containing settlements, ruins, caves, mines, temples, outposts, and hidden locations. The player is expected to encounter quests, bounties, traders, factions, hostile creatures, firearms, energy weapons, melee weapons, explosives, armor, loot, crafting, scavenging, trading, and character progression. Health, hunger, thirst, stamina, and equipment condition are also listed as parts of the experience.

Those ingredients make Exium: Theia a useful case study in old-school design, but they do not prove that every system will be equally deep. In particular, the listing does not establish a systemic simulation, branching outcomes, or persistent faction consequences. Those questions remain open until the developers demonstrate them.

What “old-school” means in this comparison

“Old-school” does not mean that Exium: Theia uses retro graphics or copies one specific classic RPG. Here it refers to where the game expects decisions and discoveries to come from.

  • The landscape is a source of information. Roads, landmarks, ruins, caves, and unusual structures are meant to invite investigation rather than function only as icons on a map.
  • Preparation has a cost. Food, water, stamina, health, ammunition, equipment condition, and crafting materials can affect whether an expedition is sensible.
  • Progress is broader than routine experience points. Finding useful gear, learning a route, trading intelligently, completing optional work, and choosing equipment can all matter alongside character advancement.
  • Quests can be encountered in context. People, settlements, factions, bounties, and locations are potential starting points instead of a single activity feed that tells the player what to do next.
  • Friction is intentional. Detours, danger, limited supplies, and the possibility of a poorly prepared fight make an excursion a decision rather than a guaranteed reward.

A modern open-world game may include some of these features, too. The difference is emphasis. A marker-heavy design can make the map an ordered list of tasks; an old-school design asks the player to interpret the world and accept more uncertainty.

Exium: Theia and modern open-world conventions

The following table separates what the Steam listing explicitly advertises from the broader design tendency it is meant to contrast. “Advertised” describes the planned game; it is not confirmation of final implementation quality.

Design question Exium: Theia’s advertised approach Common modern open-world tendency Why the difference matters
Navigation Follow roads or abandon them to look for hidden locations and off-path discoveries. Use map icons, minimaps, compass bearings, and frequent waypoints to move between known activities. Reading terrain and taking risks becomes part of play instead of merely transit.
Resource pressure Health, hunger, thirst, stamina, equipment condition, scavenging, and crafting are listed systems. Many games keep survival needs optional, cosmetic, or lightly managed so the player can maintain momentum. Choosing what to carry, repair, consume, or postpone can shape an expedition.
Quest discovery Quests, bounties, traders, factions, settlements, and places are potential sources of activity. Objectives are often collected from a centralized journal and presented in a clear sequence. Context and curiosity may replace a purely linear activity feed.
Progression Exploration, loot, trading, scavenging, equipment, crafting, and character progression are presented together. Leveling and predictable reward tracks commonly provide the main route to power. Knowledge of the world and quality of preparation can be as important as a level number.
Combat preparation Firearms, energy weapons, melee weapons, explosives, armor, hostile creatures, factions, and survival constraints are advertised. Encounters are frequently balanced around a reliable supply of ammunition, healing, and fast travel. Approach, loadout, supplies, and escape plans may matter before a fight starts.
World reactivity Factions and multiple location types are listed, but branching consequences and systemic simulation are not confirmed. Some modern games offer highly authored reactions; others use mostly static content around a player-controlled route. Do not assume that the presence of factions automatically means a fully simulated world.

Navigation: a world to read rather than a checklist to clear

Leaving the road is a primary activity

Steam’s positioning makes off-path exploration central to Exium: Theia. The player can follow roads, but the stated appeal is deciding when not to. Ruins, mines, caves, temples, outposts, and hidden locations provide the kinds of physical clues that can turn a journey into an investigation.

In a dense waypoint system, the map usually answers three questions immediately: where to go, what the reward is, and when the activity is available. Exium: Theia’s pitch reverses that order. A distant structure might be a valuable detour, a dangerous faction site, a source of crafting materials, or simply a clue to the setting’s history. The player is expected to discover which by going there.

Why this changes the pace

Unmarked exploration creates a slower information loop. You may notice a landmark, estimate the supplies needed to reach it, choose a route around hazards, and decide whether to continue when resources begin to run low. The reward is not only an item or quest completion; it is also a better mental map of the world.

This approach can be more memorable than clearing icons, but it has a cost: players who prefer explicit objectives may find it less efficient. Whether Exium: Theia provides optional map assistance, readable environmental clues, or a useful journal is not established by the current listing.

Hunger, thirst, stamina, and equipment condition

The listing specifically names health, hunger, thirst, stamina, and equipment condition. That gives Exium: Theia a stronger survival-management identity than an open world in which supplies are effectively unlimited. It does not, however, state how quickly meters drain, how severe penalties are, whether the systems can be adjusted, or whether they can be disabled.

Advertised system Likely decision it introduces What has not been stated
Health When to heal, retreat, or risk another encounter. Healing methods, regeneration rules, and difficulty scaling.
Hunger Whether to carry food and plan longer trips around settlements or supplies. Drain rate, penalties, food sources, and whether starvation is possible.
Thirst Whether water access influences routes and expedition length. Water treatment, contamination, refill locations, and exact effects.
Stamina How far the character can travel, sprint, fight, or perform strenuous actions before resting. Regeneration behavior and the actions that consume it.
Equipment condition Whether weapons and armor should be repaired, replaced, or conserved for important fights. Decay rates, repair materials, repair locations, and consequences at zero condition.

The old-school implication is that these systems should create trade-offs rather than busywork. A good implementation makes a detour meaningful because the player must decide whether its possible reward justifies food, water, durability, and combat risk. A poor implementation would turn the same mechanics into repetitive meter maintenance. Until the game is playable, that distinction cannot be settled.

Quests, bounties, traders, and factions

Activity can begin with a place or person

Exium: Theia advertises quests, bounties, traders, factions, and settlements rather than only a linear chain of missions. This suggests several entry points into the world: a conversation in a settlement, a target named in a bounty, a trader with useful information, or a faction whose territory changes how a route feels.

That structure is different from receiving every objective through a centralized menu. It encourages players to remember who needs help, which groups control an area, and where a rumor or lead originated. It also makes optional content part of navigation: visiting a settlement or investigating a ruin may reveal work that a main-story marker would never have shown.

What factions do—and do not—prove

Factions can mean anything from themed enemy groups to systems with reputation, alliances, and changing access. The Steam listing confirms that factions are part of the advertised world, but it does not document reputation rules, diplomatic choices, branching quest outcomes, or permanent consequences. Readers should not infer a fully reactive simulation from the word “factions” alone.

The same caution applies to bounties. Their presence indicates optional targets and a reason to revisit the world, but the listing does not say whether targets move, investigate the player, generate emergent encounters, or simply wait at fixed locations.

Progression through discovery, scavenging, and trade

Exium: Theia links progression to more than combat victories. Loot, scavenging, crafting, trading, equipment, and character development are all advertised. That combination supports a play style in which a player becomes stronger by understanding the world and using its economy, not merely by following the next quest marker.

Scavenging and loot

Scavenging gives abandoned places a practical purpose. A mine might offer materials, a ruin might contain equipment, and an outpost might provide supplies or clues. The important old-school question is whether the player must judge value: carrying capacity, equipment condition, danger, and the opportunity cost of returning to safety should influence what gets taken.

Trading

Traders can turn exploration into a route-planning problem. A player may keep an item for personal use, sell it to fund ammunition, or save it as a crafting input. The listing confirms trading but does not state whether merchants have individual inventories, changing prices, regional shortages, or fixed economies. Those details will determine whether trade is a meaningful strategy or a simple sell-and-buy interface.

  • HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Modular scenarios, multiple quest paths, and varied character builds ensure every campaign feels fresh and every journey through Skyrim is different.

Crafting and equipment choices

Crafting is advertised alongside armor, weapons, explosives, and scavenging. In an old-school framework, crafting is most useful when materials are limited and the player must choose between immediate utility and long-term preparation. Exium: Theia’s current description does not specify recipes, stations, skill requirements, dismantling rules, or whether crafted items can be repaired or modified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combat and the friction of failure

The planned arsenal includes firearms, energy weapons, melee weapons, explosives, and armor. Combined with hostile creatures, factions, health, stamina, and equipment condition, that suggests combat should be approached through loadout and preparation rather than a single universally optimal weapon.

Multiple weapon categories

Firearms may favor range and ammunition management; energy weapons may serve a different damage or resource role; melee weapons can preserve ammunition while increasing exposure to danger; explosives can solve groups or fortified positions at the cost of limited supplies. These are design possibilities implied by the categories, not confirmed balance rules.

Why failure matters more in a survival-leaning world

When a game tracks food, water, stamina, and condition, losing a fight can cost more than a reload. The player may have spent supplies reaching the location, damaged equipment during the attempt, or discovered that the chosen route was too ambitious. This friction is the core of old-school tension: preparation is valuable because failure has an opportunity cost.

The current evidence does not establish save restrictions, corpse runs, durability penalties, enemy scaling, or how often the player can retreat. Those mechanics should not be assumed when deciding whether the game suits your tolerance for risk.

How the advertised gameplay loop could work

The listing supports a practical expedition loop, although its exact implementation remains unverified:

  1. Start from a settlement or known route. Check available health, food, water, ammunition, armor condition, and crafting materials.
  2. Choose a lead. Follow a road toward a quest, bounty, trader, faction area, or visible landmark—or deliberately leave the route to investigate an unmarked location.
  3. Read the terrain. Decide whether to approach directly, detour around threats, search a cave or ruin, or turn back before supplies become a liability.
  4. Resolve the encounter. Use firearms, energy weapons, melee weapons, explosives, armor, and consumables according to the threat and the resources you can afford to spend.
  5. Scavenge selectively. Compare loot and materials with carrying capacity, equipment condition, crafting needs, and the distance to safety.
  6. Return, trade, or continue. Sell or use what you found, repair or replace equipment if the game permits it, and decide whether the next destination is worth another expedition.
  7. Build knowledge as well as power. Remember routes, faction boundaries, useful traders, hidden places, and the consequences of earlier choices.

This loop is what separates a resource-aware exploration RPG from a map-clearing exercise. The eventual game will need to make each step consequential without turning every trip into inventory administration.

Documented comparison points from other old-school RPGs

Balrum: breadth and player-directed activity

Steam describes Balrum as an older open-world RPG with turn-based, deep tactical combat. It includes dozens of side quests, farming, home building, and custom-item crafting. Balrum is therefore a useful comparison for breadth: the player can pursue several kinds of activity instead of treating the main quest as the only meaningful route.

Balrum is not evidence that Exium: Theia will use turn-based combat, farming, home building, or the same quest structure. Its value as a comparison is narrower: both designs illustrate how optional systems can make an open world feel like a place to inhabit rather than a sequence of combat arenas.

In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable

Pale Coins: recent indie friction

Pale Coins, released on October 22, 2025, is a newer old-school fantasy open-world RPG. Steam highlights punishing bosses, goblin-filled dungeons, exploration, legendary weapons, loot, character customization, and difficult combat. It demonstrates that old-school difficulty and exploration-led progression are not limited to games from an earlier era.

Pale Coins does not verify Exium: Theia’s balance, production quality, or release prospects. It is a reference point for the kind of deliberate friction the new game is signaling: danger and discovery are meant to coexist instead of being smoothed away by constant rewards.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: survival without instant gratification

GamesRadar’s April 17, 2026 open-world RPG guide describes Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 as resisting “instant gratification.” The guide points to the protagonist needing to stay fed, clothed, and sheltered, while wandering, alchemy, and dice provide reasons to engage with the world beyond the critical path.

That comparison clarifies the intended pacing. Survival-related needs can make ordinary activities—finding shelter, preparing supplies, or taking a side diversion—part of the role-playing experience. It does not mean Exium: Theia will copy Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s historical setting, simulation depth, or specific systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Old School RuneScape: skill breadth and autonomy

The same GamesRadar guide presents Old School RuneScape through trainable skills and quests with unusual depth. Its relevance is the idea that player autonomy can come from many viable activities and long-term skills, not only from a conventional level-and-gear ladder.

Exium: Theia is a solo science-fiction action RPG rather than an online game, and no equivalent skill list has been published. The comparison is about design philosophy: a world feels more open when the player can make progress through several connected pursuits.

Is Exium: Theia really old-school, or only styled that way?

Based on the available listing, it has credible old-school signals: off-road discovery, hidden locations, survival meters, equipment condition, scavenging, trading, factions, optional quests and bounties, and progression that includes preparation and exploration. Those are functional mechanics, not merely visual references.

However, “old-school” is not a binary certification. The experience will depend on implementation details that are not yet available:

  • Whether locations can be found through environmental clues rather than only through icons.
  • Whether hunger, thirst, stamina, and condition create meaningful choices or routine chores.
  • Whether quests can be solved in different ways and whether factions respond to the player’s actions.
  • Whether loot and crafting support distinct builds instead of incremental replacements.
  • Whether failure has enough consequence to make preparation matter without becoming punitive busywork.
  • Whether the world remains interesting after the obvious locations and quests have been exhausted.

At present, the most accurate description is “an unreleased game with a clearly old-school design pitch,” not “a proven modern classic” or “a confirmed successor to any particular RPG.”

  • SEAMLESS gameplay: players and monsters can move from One map area to another freely and without loading screens whilst gameplay also dynamically transitions between night and day.

How it differs from marker-heavy modern open worlds

Many contemporary open-world RPGs prioritize accessibility and momentum. They reveal objectives on the map, provide abundant fast travel, keep survival needs light, and offer frequent rewards so players can move from one activity to the next with little downtime. That structure is not inherently shallow; it makes a large game legible and reduces frustration.

Exium: Theia is advertising a different contract:

  • You may need to notice a place before you can select it. Exploration starts with observation rather than a map icon.
  • You may need to prepare before accepting a detour. Food, water, stamina, health, ammunition, and condition are intended to influence route choice.
  • You may have several reasons to visit the same region. A faction, bounty, trader, hidden site, or resource can give a location value beyond one quest.
  • You may become stronger by learning how the world works. Knowledge of supplies, routes, threats, and useful equipment complements character progression.

The trade-off is clear. Players who enjoy self-directed discovery and consequential preparation may find this more absorbing. Players who want a fully signposted itinerary, rapid travel, and low-maintenance exploration may find the same choices slow or opaque.

Should you wishlist Exium: Theia?

A wishlist is reasonable if the advertised combination matches your preferred play style and you are comfortable evaluating an unreleased project on its design promise rather than on performance or reviews.

Steam’s October 2026 target is a planned date, not a guarantee. Following the store page and later developer demonstrations is the sensible way to reassess the game as release information becomes concrete.

What cannot be judged yet

Several purchase decisions must remain open because Exium: Theia has not launched:

Question Current status
Release date Planned for October 2026 on Steam; schedules can change.
Price Not established in the available listing.
Performance and system requirements Not established.
Review quality No launch review record exists because the game is unreleased.
Physical editions or required accessories No such product or requirement is documented.
Branching quests and systemic faction reactions Not established; the listing mentions factions but not their depth.
Exact survival rules Health, hunger, thirst, stamina, and equipment condition are advertised, but their rates, penalties, and options are not stated.

These are not minor omissions for a survival-leaning open-world RPG. They determine whether the systems feel immersive, repetitive, forgiving, or punishing. Until they are documented, comparisons should stay at the level of design intent.

Verdict

Exium: Theia stands apart from the most checklist-oriented open-world RPGs by making off-path exploration, preparation, and resource awareness its advertised center of gravity. Its planned science-fiction world combines hidden locations and optional activities with hunger, thirst, stamina, equipment condition, scavenging, crafting, trading, factions, bounties, and multiple weapon types. Balrum, Pale Coins, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Old School RuneScape show different ways that breadth, difficulty, survival, and autonomy can work in old-school-inspired RPGs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important qualification is its status: Exium: Theia is planned for Steam in October 2026 and remains unreleased. It is best understood today as a promising old-school design proposition, not a finished alternative to modern open-world conventions. Wishlist it for the mechanics it promises, and wait for hands-on evidence before treating those promises as proof of the final game.
