A big part of the experience depends on whether your Mac has the right hardware—especially when a feature relies on on-device AI or model-accelerated processing.
If you’re on an M1 Mac or newer, you’ll often see options that simply don’t appear on older Intel Macs or earlier Apple Silicon models. This guide shows how to confirm your eligibility, find the M1-gated settings, and troubleshoot when something expected isn’t showing up.
Coverage note: Apple’s feature availability can vary by region, language, and account state, even when the chip requirement is met. Use the steps below to verify both hardware and settings.
Why macOS Sequoia can feel different on M1 vs older Macs
Many “exclusive” macOS features aren’t exclusive in the sense of being hidden. They’re gated because the system needs a specific class of performance, neural engine capability, or secure on-device processing.

- 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 wireless networking, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac compatible | Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology
On Apple’s side, the practical result is simple: some features require Apple Silicon M1 (or newer). On Intel and unsupported Apple Silicon models, those features either don’t install the required components or won’t appear in System Settings.
Who qualifies: the M1 (and newer) requirement
For macOS Sequoia, the clearest gating rule you’ll run into is the M1-or-newer requirement for AI-driven capabilities—especially anything labeled under Apple Intelligence.
| Mac chip family | Typical result on macOS Sequoia |
|---|---|
| Apple silicon M1 | Generally eligible for M1-only intelligence features (if region/language rules also match) |
| Apple silicon M2 / M3 | Eligible; often the most stable experience |
| Apple silicon M1 Pro / M1 Max / M1 Ultra | Eligible (same M1 generation requirement) |
| Apple silicon older than M1 | Usually not eligible for M1-only intelligence features |
| Intel Macs | Not eligible for M1-only intelligence features; you’ll see fewer options in settings |
If a feature depends on Apple Intelligence-style on-device processing, you should assume “M1 or newer” is the hard gate—then confirm availability with the settings screens below.
How to check your Mac’s chip in 30 seconds
You don’t need any third-party tools. macOS already tells you what matters.
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left.
- Select About This Mac.
- Find the Chip entry (or similar wording). Example values include Apple M1, Apple M2, Apple M3.
If you see Intel or an older Apple chip name, you should expect M1-gated Sequoia features to be unavailable or missing.
macOS Sequoia features that require M1 or newer
Apple’s most consistent “M1-only” category is intelligence features—especially those that process models on-device rather than purely in the cloud. The names can change between betas and releases, but the gating behavior is reliable.
Here are the feature types you should check for on your Mac.
Rank #2
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- Charge less with up to 18 hours of battery life - 13.3-inch Retina display with P3 wide color
- 8-core CPU delivers up to 3.5x faster performance to tackle projects faster than ever before
- Up to eight GPU cores with up to 5x faster graphics - FaceTime HD camera for clearer, sharper video calls
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning - 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
Apple Intelligence and on-device intelligence features
If your Mac qualifies, you’ll typically see an Apple Intelligence area in System Settings. On non-eligible Macs, that section is often absent.

The chip requirement for Apple Intelligence is commonly stated by Apple as M1 or newer. That means the features connected to Apple Intelligence—like on-device understanding and generation tasks—usually follow the same rule.
Advanced privacy and on-device processing options
When Apple Intelligence runs on-device, macOS can offer privacy controls that aren’t present on older hardware. You may see additional toggles related to what’s processed locally and how requests are handled.
On unsupported Macs, the toggles may be missing entirely, or you may only get basic versions of the workflow that don’t depend on on-device inference.
Enhanced media and model-accelerated tasks (device-dependent)
Some Sequoia capabilities use performance-accelerated pipelines (not just CPU). If a feature is tied to the same acceleration path as Apple Intelligence, macOS may restrict it to M1 or newer.
This is where you’ll notice “exclusive” behavior: the option exists on M1+ but not on older Macs, even with the same macOS version.
Continuity features that add on-device intelligence elements
Certain cross-device experiences (iPhone-to-Mac workflows) can include an intelligence component. When the intelligence piece requires M1+ acceleration, the continuity experience may look different or be partially unavailable.
Rank #3
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- Go longer than ever with up to 18 hours of battery life
- Up to eight GPU cores with up to 5x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games
In practice, you’ll still be able to use standard continuity features on many Macs, but the “smart” variants can be gated.
How to enable M1-only features in macOS Sequoia
Having an M1 Mac doesn’t guarantee the option is on. Apple’s intelligence features also depend on language/region, sometimes account readiness, and whether the feature is available in your configuration.

Use this path to find the core toggles (labels can vary slightly by macOS point release):
- Open System Settings.
- Go to a section named Apple Intelligence (or Siri & Apple Intelligence).
- Look for toggles like Set Up Apple Intelligence or Enable Apple Intelligence.
- Follow any setup prompts, then restart if macOS requests it.
If you don’t see Apple Intelligence settings at all on an M1 Mac, that usually indicates either version mismatch, region/language mismatch, or a sign-in/account state issue.
Set language and region correctly
Even when the hardware is eligible, Apple may limit availability based on your system language/region. Update these before you conclude the feature is unsupported.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to General > Language & Region.
- Set Region to a supported country/region and confirm the primary language matches.
- Reboot or sign out/in if macOS asks.
Confirm availability status and toggle locations
In the Apple Intelligence area, look for status text indicating availability. If it shows “not available” or “requires additional setup,” don’t waste time reinstalling macOS first—solve the configuration cause.
Also check for related settings under Siri so your Siri configuration aligns with what Apple Intelligence expects.

Troubleshooting: what to do when an M1-only feature won’t show up
If a feature you expect isn’t present on macOS Sequoia, treat it like a checklist: hardware → OS version → region/language → account and sign-in → system constraints.
Check 1: your Mac actually is M1 or newer
Some people assume their Mac is newer than it is. Verify using About This Mac and confirm the Chip line.
Check 2: your macOS Sequoia version isn’t current
Apple often adjusts feature gating and availability via point updates. Make sure you’re actually on the intended Sequoia build.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to General > Software Update.
- Install any available updates for macOS Sequoia, then retry the Apple Intelligence setup.
Check 3: Apple Intelligence eligibility and account setup
Apple Intelligence can depend on your Apple account state and any required enrollment. If macOS prompts for setup steps you skipped, the option may remain disabled.
Return to the Apple Intelligence settings page and confirm there’s no “complete setup” message waiting for you.
Check 4: region, language, and Siri settings
On many systems, the most common cause of missing “intelligence” options is that the configuration doesn’t meet Apple’s availability rules.
- Re-check Language & Region.
- Verify Siri language matches the same region/language intent.
- Confirm your macOS user profile isn’t in a partially configured state after migration.
Check 5: storage, power mode, and system constraints
Some tasks won’t complete unless the system has enough free storage or is allowed to run in a normal power state.

- 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 wireless networking, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac compatible | Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology
Try these basics:
- Free up space (aim for several GB or more).
- Connect to power if you’re using a MacBook.
- Temporarily disable Low Power Mode if it’s enabled.
Check 6: iCloud and sign-in state
If Apple Intelligence setup requires features tied to your Apple ID, sign-in problems can block access. Confirm you’re signed in to iCloud and that macOS has permission to use the relevant services.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Apple ID.
- Confirm you’re signed in and iCloud services are enabled.
Alternatives if your Mac isn’t M1 or newer
If your Mac is Intel or older Apple silicon, you can still get a lot of value from macOS Sequoia, just not the M1-gated intelligence features.
Use feature equivalents that still work on older Macs
Look for classic versions of the workflows that don’t depend on Apple Intelligence. For example, many productivity improvements are available through standard apps and OS services even when “AI” toggles are missing.
Adjust expectations: what “exclusive” usually means in practice
“Exclusive” in Apple’s ecosystem often means the feature’s advanced mode—on-device generation, enhanced understanding, or model-accelerated enhancements—requires specific hardware. You may still see partial functionality, but the full option won’t appear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuick compatibility checklist
Before you troubleshoot deeper, confirm these five items:
- Chip: Apple M1 / M1 Pro / M1 Max / M1 Ultra or newer (verified in About This Mac).
- OS: macOS Sequoia is updated via Software Update.
- Settings: Apple Intelligence section exists in System Settings.
- Language/region: set to a supported configuration under Language & Region.
- Account: Apple ID and iCloud sign-in are healthy.
Bottom Line
For macOS Sequoia, the biggest “exclusive” behavior you’ll notice is tied to Apple’s on-device intelligence class of features—most commonly restricted to M1 Macs and newer. If you don’t see Apple Intelligence or related toggles, don’t guess: verify your chip, update Sequoia, and align language/region and sign-in state.
Once the settings page appears and Apple Intelligence setup completes, you’ll get the full experience that M1+ hardware is designed to handle.
