The difference is in the state that becomes coherent and in how that coherence is created. An exciton-polariton condensate occupies a shared quantum state of hybrid light–matter quasiparticles formed inside a semiconductor microcavity. A conventional laser produces coherent photons from an optical gain medium whose amplification overcomes cavity losses, ordinarily after establishing population inversion.
Both systems can have a threshold, a narrow spectrum and highly coherent emission. Those similar signals do not make them the same device: polariton systems are usually driven and lossy, their excitonic component can disappear as pumping changes, and the resulting device can cross over into ordinary photon lasing.

What is the difference between a polariton laser and a conventional laser?
A polariton laser (often discussed together with an exciton-polariton condensate) reaches macroscopic occupation of a polariton state through stimulated relaxation. A conventional photon laser reaches oscillation when optical gain in its active medium exceeds losses, ordinarily using population inversion and stimulated emission between electronic or atomic levels.

The word condensate describes collective occupation of a bosonic state; laser describes a light-producing device and its gain process. In real experiments the terms overlap. A driven polariton condensate is not automatically an equilibrium Bose–Einstein condensate, and a polariton device can become photon-laser-like when strong coupling is lost. The coupling regime and the measured state therefore matter more than the label.

How an exciton-polariton is made
Excitons supply the matter component
An exciton is a bound electron–hole excitation in a semiconductor. It carries no net electric charge but behaves as a bosonic quasiparticle at the densities relevant to many optical experiments. Its binding energy and oscillator strength depend on the material, dimensionality and temperature.
The microcavity supplies the photon component
A semiconductor microcavity confines light between mirrors. When a cavity-photon mode is tuned near an exciton transition and their interaction is stronger than the relevant losses, the two modes do not simply pass through one another. They form mixed eigenstates called exciton-polaritons. The upper and lower polariton branches are the observable signatures of this strong-coupling regime.
The lower branch can be very light because of its photon fraction, while retaining interactions and nonlinear response from its exciton fraction. That combination lets polaritons move through the cavity and interact more strongly than bare photons would, but it also gives them a finite lifetime: the photon component leaks through the mirrors.
How polariton condensation creates coherence
Stimulated relaxation fills one state
External pumping creates excitons or other carriers that relax toward lower-energy polariton states. Once a state has appreciable occupation, bosonic stimulation can make further scattering into that state more likely. A macroscopic population then builds in one momentum, energy or spatial mode, producing a coherent polariton field.
This route does not generally require the conventional laser condition of population inversion between two matter levels. It still requires energy input, a relaxation pathway and enough gain to balance decay. “Without population inversion” therefore never means “without pumping” or “without losses.”
Condensation is usually nonequilibrium
Polaritons can leave the cavity before they fully thermalize. Their lifetime may be comparable to, or shorter than, the time needed to reach equilibrium. Most practical condensates are consequently driven–dissipative: a pump feeds a reservoir, relaxation transfers population to polariton states, and photons continuously escape.
This differs from the textbook picture of an equilibrium atomic Bose–Einstein condensate, where particles can approach thermal equilibrium in a nearly closed trap. A polariton condensate can nevertheless show spontaneous phase coherence, collective flow, nonlinear blueshifts and other condensate-like behavior while remaining an open system.

Gain must exceed cavity losses
A conventional laser has an active medium, a pump and an optical resonator. The pump raises the medium into an excited distribution. When stimulated emission at the lasing frequency exceeds absorption, mirror loss and other losses, the intracavity photon number grows. The resonator selects allowed modes, and one or more modes emerge as the output beam.

In the ordinary description, the gain medium is prepared with population inversion: more emitters occupy the upper lasing level than the lower one. Stimulated emission then copies the frequency, phase and direction of existing photons. Some specialized schemes can reduce or modify the inversion requirement, but that is not the mechanism normally meant by a conventional laser in this comparison.
The photons are not hybrid polaritons
In the lasing regime the relevant long-lived excitation is a cavity photon amplified by the gain medium. The matter system provides gain, but the emitted field is not a strongly coupled exciton–photon eigenstate. If pumping or carrier density changes the material response so that strong coupling collapses, a device that began as a polariton system can emit through this ordinary photon-lasing route.

A detector may see a sharp spectral line, a sudden increase in output and first-order coherence from either system. Those observations establish a coherent optical source, not its microscopic origin. A polariton condensate can radiate through the photon fraction of its wavefunction, so the escaping light naturally resembles laser light.
To identify the mechanism, experiments must combine output behavior with evidence about the internal state. A single threshold curve is insufficient. In particular, a bright line can result from a polariton condensate, a conventional photon laser, or a crossover between them.
Strong coupling, weak coupling and the crossover
Strong coupling: the polariton regime
When exciton–photon coupling exceeds the relevant damping, the normal modes remain mixed. Spectral anticrossing and upper and lower polariton branches are characteristic evidence. The lower branch can then support condensation while retaining an excitonic fraction and interaction-driven nonlinearities.
Weak coupling: the photon-laser regime
At higher carrier density, stronger pumping or other changes, excitons can broaden, screen one another or saturate. The system may no longer sustain the strong-coupling splitting. Gain from the material can still amplify a cavity mode, producing conventional photon lasing.
Why the crossover changes the interpretation
A report that calls a device a “polariton laser” should state whether strong coupling persists at the lasing threshold. If the excitonic character has vanished, the device is operating in a photon-laser-like regime even if the same microcavity hosted polaritons at lower pump. Conversely, a low-threshold coherent line alone does not prove condensation.

Temperature: what has and has not been demonstrated
Room-temperature condensation or polariton-laser behavior has been reported in selected organic and wide-bandgap material systems. These demonstrations rely on robust excitons, suitable cavity coupling and a design that preserves the required interactions and relaxation pathways at elevated temperature.
That result is conditional, not a universal property of polaritons. Different semiconductors, cavity qualities, disorder levels and pumping geometries can require very different operating temperatures. It is therefore inaccurate to say that all polariton condensates work at room temperature, or that they automatically outperform conventional lasers thermally.
Materials and device architecture
Organic microcavities
Organic molecules can have large exciton binding energies and strong optical transitions, making them candidates for room-temperature strong coupling. Their vibrational structure, disorder, photochemical stability and loss channels still determine whether a stable condensate or polariton laser is possible.

Wide-bandgap materials can retain excitons at higher temperatures than many narrow-gap systems. Cavity design, crystal quality, carrier injection or optical pumping and heat management remain decisive. A demonstration in one material platform cannot be transferred automatically to another.
The microcavity is part of the physics
Mirror reflectivity controls photon leakage; detuning controls the exciton and photon fractions; mode volume affects interaction and nonlinear response; and disorder can localize or scatter polaritons. These parameters influence threshold and coherence as much as the nominal material name does.
Pumping and energy flow
Most condensate experiments use optical pumping, although electrical injection is an important development goal. A nonresonant pump first creates a high-energy reservoir, which then relaxes into lower polariton states. Resonant pumping can prepare a coherent polariton field more directly but makes interpretation of spontaneous condensation more delicate.
Conventional lasers can also be optically or electrically pumped. Their pump must create the gain distribution needed for stimulated emission. In both technologies, energy is continuously supplied and heat and other losses must be managed; neither is a perpetual or loss-free source.

The same caution applies to wall-plug efficiency, linewidth, beam quality, modulation speed and operating temperature. A fair comparison requires matched conditions and a stated metric. The available reviews do not provide a single, directly comparable numerical dataset that supports a universal performance ranking.
How researchers distinguish condensation from photon lasing
1. Verify the coupling regime
Measure the dispersion while tuning the cavity or exciton energy. Persistent anticrossing and a resolved strong-coupling splitting support a polariton interpretation. If the splitting collapses under the pump conditions used for lasing, analyze the output as a possible weak-coupling photon laser.
2. Track the composition of the emitting mode
Angle-resolved spectroscopy maps energy against in-plane momentum and can reveal whether the emission follows a lower-polariton branch or an ordinary cavity mode. The exciton and photon fractions should be evaluated at the actual operating point, not inferred only from a low-power spectrum.

3. Measure coherence, not just brightness
First- and second-order correlation measurements, interferometry and linewidth-versus-pump data provide evidence for the development of a collective coherent state. A narrow line by itself is not decisive because a conventional laser is also narrow-linewidth.
4. Look for interactions and nonlinear shifts
Polariton–polariton interactions can produce density-dependent blueshifts, nonlinear transmission and collective flow. These signatures must be separated from heating, refractive-index changes and carrier-induced effects that can also shift a conventional cavity mode.
5. Compare input–output behavior with a model
A threshold-like kink can occur in both systems. Modeling the reservoir, decay, saturation and gain, together with spectroscopy and coherence data, is needed to identify whether stimulated relaxation in strong coupling or ordinary gain in weak coupling is responsible.

“A condensate needs no pump.”
False for practical polariton devices. The condensate is replenished by a pump because polaritons decay through their photon component. The absence of a conventional inversion requirement does not remove the energy requirement.
“Every coherent polariton emission is an equilibrium BEC.”
No. Most experiments are driven–dissipative. They can display spontaneous phase coherence and macroscopic occupation without reaching the equilibrium conditions of an atomic gas.

“Room-temperature polariton operation is universal.”
No. It has been demonstrated for selected materials and structures. Exciton stability, cavity coupling, disorder, losses and thermal management determine whether a particular device works at room temperature.
“The lowest threshold always wins.”
No. Threshold values are meaningful only with their pump, cavity, material and measurement conditions. A low optical threshold may not imply better wall-plug efficiency, stability or manufacturability.
“Polariton laser and photon laser are completely separate categories.”
Not always. As strong coupling weakens, a polariton device can cross into conventional photon lasing. Terminology varies across the literature, so the coupling regime and microscopic evidence should accompany the name.
What the distinction means for applications
Polariton systems are attractive for studying nonequilibrium quantum fluids, nonlinear optics, ultrafast switching and collective light–matter behavior. Their light effective mass and interaction-enabled nonlinearities can produce effects unavailable from bare photons, but short lifetimes, disorder, pump complexity and thermal constraints remain engineering challenges.
Conventional lasers benefit from mature gain materials, cavity designs, electrical drivers and manufacturing processes. They remain the reference technology for many communications, sensing, measurement and industrial applications. A polariton source is not automatically a replacement; its value depends on whether its hybrid-state physics supplies a useful function under realistic operating conditions.
A practical checklist for reading a claim
- What is the operating coupling regime? Strong coupling at the stated pump condition supports polariton language; weak coupling points to photon lasing.
- What state is occupied? Look for a lower-polariton branch, macroscopic occupation and a defined momentum or spatial mode.
- How is coherence established? Require correlation or interferometric evidence in addition to a spectral peak.
- What supplies the gain or population? Identify the pump, reservoir and relaxation path rather than treating “no inversion” as “no gain.”
- Which conditions apply? Check material, cavity detuning, temperature, pump geometry, repetition rate and outcoupling before comparing thresholds.
- Could the device have crossed over? Verify that excitonic character and strong-coupling signatures survive at the reported operating point.
Bottom line
An exciton-polariton condensate is a collectively occupied, hybrid light–matter state in a strongly coupled microcavity, usually sustained under driven–dissipative conditions. A conventional laser amplifies a cavity-photon mode through optical gain that ordinarily requires population inversion. Their emitted light can look alike, but the microscopic state, relaxation pathway and coupling regime are different. The correct comparison is therefore not “which label is better,” but which mechanism the experiment actually demonstrates and under what material, cavity, pump and temperature conditions.
For background, the distinction is developed in the 2014 Nature Physics review by Tim Byrnes, Na Young Kim and Yoshihisa Yamamoto, with later reviews covering nonequilibrium behavior, organic microcavities and room-temperature demonstrations.
