What Layden says Sony’s decision changes
Layden criticized Sony’s announced move away from new physical game discs in remarks from an appearance on The Expansion Pass podcast, as reported by GamesRadar+. “I don’t agree with that decision,” he said, according to the outlet.

His central concern is the difference between owning a tangible copy and having access to a digital asset. “But at the same time – I think this is probably the more insidious aspect to it – it changes the conversation from ‘do you own a game?’ Or ‘do you have access to a digital asset?’” GamesRadar+ reported him saying.

This is Layden’s criticism and his view of the potential brand risk for PlayStation, not a universal legal ruling about ownership. The Video Games Chronicle also reported his comments. Layden said he did not know Sony’s internal financial reasoning for the decision.
When will PlayStation stop releasing new games on disc?
Sony announced that physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. In its PlayStation Blog announcement, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications, said new games after that date will be available digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers.
Sony says the change does not affect games already released, or scheduled for disc release, before January 2028. That is the scope of the stated exemption; the announcement does not publish a market-share figure or specify how every future title will be distributed beyond its statement about digital availability.

Does buying a digital PlayStation game mean you own it?
For US PlayStation Store purchases, PlayStation’s US Terms of Service describe the purchase as a personal license to use the product for private, non-commercial purposes. The terms say the license is not transferable unless applicable local law requires otherwise, and that users do not own the product.

That wording is specific to PlayStation Store purchases under the US terms. It should not be treated as a statement of the rules in every country, or as a description of physical discs or every other digital storefront. For a purchase in another region, check the terms that apply there.

A disc is plainly a physical object to collect, but that alone does not prove every disc can be resold or lent without restrictions, or that a game will run fully offline without downloads or updates. Likewise, the sources do not establish that a digital game will necessarily become inaccessible. Those questions depend on the specific title, applicable terms, and any online or download requirements.

How much of the market is already digital?
GamesRadar+ reported Layden’s rough estimate that 80% of purchases are downloads and 20% physical. That is his estimate, not an independently verified industry-wide sales statistic. Sony’s announcement describes a consumer shift toward digital formats but does not provide a supporting market-share number.
